Lucy’s Cat Blogging — Jags and Theo Together

Posted by Lucy on Saturday, March 26th, 2005 at 9:23 am

Welcome to cat blogging at Stick and Ball Guy's webpage. Normally, SBG writes about sports on this webpage but on Saturday's I take over. I'm Lucy. I'm SBG's fiancee. It's time to talk about cats.

This is my fifth week as a cat blogger. Previous entries are here, here, here, and here. Last week, I talked about how well Jags and Theo get along and some people were wondering how SBG and I introduced Jags and Theo. Today, I'll talk a little bit about that.

When we got Theo, Jags was about 10 months old and Theo was about 6 weeks old. I have heard that it is easier to introduce cats when they are younger rather than older. We were confident that everything would be fine because Jags had such a gentle demeanor. SBG brought Theo over to introduce Jags in a carrier. He brought the carrier in and set it down in the apartment. Jags was quite interested. After a while, SBG opened the door of the carrier. Jags didn't go in the carrier but he sat down outside of it, just a ways away.

After a while Theo came out. Surprisingly to us, Jags got a little agitated and started to hiss and growl. But, he stay his distance. We let them be together, but we watched Jags very carefully to make sure he didn't attack Theo. We left them together for a half an hour or so and then we separated them. We left the carrier out and Jags sniffed the carrier. A little while later, we brought Theo out again. Jags hissed and growled some more, but he really seemed to be warming up to Theo. They interacted a lot more. When Theo would walk, Jags would attack him. But, instead of biting, Jags would lick Theo. He'd lick his whole body, a full bath! We were quite confident at that point that Jags and Theo would be fine.

We kept them together from that point forward during the day. The first couple of nights, we separated them, but by the third night, they were together. And they've been together as a pair ever since.

I don't know that we did anything special to introduce them. I think a lot of it has to do with their personalities. Jags is pretty laid back and accepting. Even though he is a lot bigger than Theo, he defers to him a lot. And Theo is pretty aggressive. Theo will push Jags away from food, and Jags will let Theo eat. If we want to play with the cats, Jags will sit and watch Theo play. If we hold Theo, then Jags will play. It is been that way from day one. Theo has asserted his place, and Jags has deferred.

They wrestle and play, but Jags and Theo never hurt each other. Most of the wrestling matches end up in a mutual licking session. They are quite wonderful buds.

Here is Theo last Saturday in the dishwasher. I thought it was quite cute! SBG wasn't quite as impressed.

Here's our little lion Jags.

Buddies forever.

If you have cat blogging, leave me a link and I'll add you to my cat blogging list. Leave a comment to say hi! See you next week.

Love, Lucy

Lucy, usually people just put the dishes down on the floor and let the kitties lick them. You, on the other hand, put the dishes and the cat in the dishwasher.. ha hahah.. saves on the dishwasher soap, right. just kidding. Cute kitties, as always! Great photos.
