Jags is a Bad Cat!

Posted by Lucy on Saturday, May 7th, 2005 at 8:59 am

Hello everyone, my name is Lucy. I am SBG's fiancee. Most of you know that on Saturdays, SBG turns this website over to me so that I can talk about our cats, Jags and Theo. This is, however, the last time I will write this sentence on this website. I am SBG's fiancee. That's because next Saturday, I will be too busy to write about our cats. Why? Because we are getting married next Saturday! I can hardly believe it. The time has come up so quickly!

Jags and Theo are so very important to me. Especially Jags, in a way. When I met SBG he was this hard working law student, studying so hard and working so much. He worked all day and went to school at night. He was a tough guy, always pushing and striving to get his law degree and working. Sometimes, I wondered how important I was to him.

I realized just how important in September of 2003. Back then, I had a cat named Puddie. I loved Puddie very much, but she was a tempermental old cat and she had no time for anyone else. Every time that SBG was around, Puddie would hiss at him. It was pretty clear to me that SBG didn't care very much for cats. In fact, he said that he hated them.

But, one day I went to work and my co-worker brought in this tiny little cat. She had found it in the middle of the road when she was driving to work -- it's mother and siblings had been run over. I called SBG at work -- would he take this cat in? I never in the world expected the answer that I got -- yes. I knew he didn't want the cat. I knew that the only reason that he took it in was because I wanted it. SBG took such good care of that cat. He immediately had it taken to the vet for a check up. He found out what it should be fed. He read all kinds of things about cats. He was serious about this cat. SBG named the cat Jags, after Mick Jagger.

Jags is a very affectionate cat, but we've noticed that he is very moody.

The Melancholy Maine (Coon)

He seems to get quite lonely. He won't eat if we aren't around. He gets upset about a lot of things. He was so lonely that we got Theo to keep him company. I wanted to call him Teddy because he looked like a teddy bear, but decided on Theodore, a nice little variation. Or Theo for short. I like that name a lot.

Unlike Jags, Theo is very even tempered. He's kind of shy, interested in people, but not that interested.

Jags, what's not to love?

For the most part Jags and Theo get along fine. Lately, however, both SBG and I have noticed that Jags is getting a little testy with Theo.

Looks cute, but is mean to his brother.

He hogs the window sill, not letting Theo sit by the screen. When Theo tries to sit next to Jags, Jags won't let him.

Jags doesn't let this happen much lately.

This morning, Jags was eating and Theo came over for some food. Usually, Jags will let Theo have some, but this morning, he was hissing at poor Theo. Well, poor Theo is a relative term. Because Theo just kept eating and Jags pouted and went away.

We love Jags a lot, but right now, he seems to be going through a phase and is crabby quite a bit. Bad cat, Jags!

See you in a few weeks!

Love, Lucy

Hi Lucy,
I'm frightwig's SO so you have seen a lot of my cats. I read your catblogs most of the time and when I saw this one I thought I should say something, you are always so nice in your comments about our cats.
First, congradulations!

Second, has your kitty ever acted out like this before? If not I would recommend taking your kitties in right away. Frequently, when cats go through a major change of attitude there is a problem, even if they are eating and nothing else is wrong.

This could be with either kitty. One is sick, but noticibly so, and starting to act out. Or the one is sick and the other knows it and is trying to drive the sick kitty away.
I've heard of kitties knowing that the other is sick months before the problem shows up, sometimes even before the vet can find a problem.

I hope there is no problem but I would still take them in and have some routine tests run. One thing that a Maine Coon can get is cardiomyopathy, which can easily be detected as a murmer.

Of course he could just be mad because he knows you are doing something that does not involve him.

Thanks for the comments, Jenn. Both Lucy and I were a little concerned about Jags. He's been kind of cranky lately, but then again, he's always seemed to go through moods. He was being very rough with Theo, including hitting him a lot harder than just playing. The hissing was totally out of character. He hasn't hissed at Theo since Theo's second day here. I was pretty shocked.

Then, last night they were all snuggled up together like nothing had happened. Today, they've played quite a bit and seem to be fine. They were also eating together very nicely. I'll mention it to Lucy and we'll watch them closely. If it persists, I'll have them taken in.

Sorry, The WGOM is no longer accepting Letters to the Editor on this article.
