Radke Mows Down the Royals

That looked a lot like the Brad Radke we've seen a lot of before.  Yes, it was the Royals, but I'll take it.

The fact is, I'd really rather write sunny stories about the Twins.  But, I won't do it unless they actually play well with respect to expectations.  The last two nights we saw what we expected to see.  Good pitching and an average offense.

You mean you don't want to be cranky and irritable about the team you cheer for? I'm shocked, SHOCKED, I say.

It always strikes me as silly when people criticize someone's writing just based on the fact that they think they are too positive or negative, and not on specific points.

  • I forgot what it's like to win 2 games in a row. It's a good feeling. I don't care if it's the Mariners and the Royals.

I still have faith that this team is going to turn things around. Maybe beating up on the worst team in baseball over the next couple games will start us on the right track.

Well, I guess everyone is entitled to their own opinion. I was not high on this team prior to the beginning of the season. I based that opinion on the Twins' response to a much stronger division, a response that I thought was inadequate. And, I guess then that I had a bad feeling about this team. I read other people who are optimistic and sunny and I think -- man, I can't buy that. But, everyone has a right to their opinion. I'd prefer that people base their thoughts on an even and fair minded analysis of the team -- not being unnecessarily positive or negative. And you know what? Sometimes when the team is going bad, fans who actually love the team and the game need to vent and spew out a bunch of "this team sucks" epithets. That's part of the experience.

But, yes, it is nice to experience a couple of wins in a row. As someone who sat in my parent's basement many a night keeping score while listening to the radio during that fateful 1982 season, I'm pretty sure I'll never leave the Twins, but I reserve the right to be pretty damned mad about disappointing levels of performance.

  • I'm not saying they're going to win the division, the additions they made just weren't enough to pass Cleveland or Chicago. I liked the White signing, which hasn't been good obviously. I hated the Castro and Batista moves, and I still think Cuddyer was decent enough at third base defensively to still be playing there. But Cleveland and Chicago have good pitching and can hit. The Twins still can't hit.

With that said, I thought going into the season that the pitching would be at least good enough to keep the team on the periphery of the race. I didn't foresee a total meltdown of 3/5 of the starting rotation. If Radke, Silva, and even Lohse can get back to their performances of last year, I think this team can find themselves maybe only 5 or 6 games back headed into the last month of the season.

Of course, you can't win the division in April but you sure can lose it. Maybe they already have.
