![]() | Happy Birthday, Uncle Sam! My Dad used to say that the summer was "half shot" on the 4th of July. I never could figure that out -- we had only been out of school a month and had two months of summer vacation left. I notice, though, that the Twins have played 81 games. Maybe that's what he was talking about. As I have documented several times before, I went to my first professional baseball game on July 4, 1973. It was a glorious night with 49,000 people crammed into the ballpark and fireworks afterward. Do you remember your first game? There's always a chance, SBG, else there would not be a need to actually play the games. That's why you can still find at least a few fans in the stands at Kauffman Stadium. While an actuary can tell you with pretty good statistical certainty how many 41-79 year old male smokers in Minnesota will die from lung cancer this year, he can't tell you which ones. But our chances today don't look so good.

As if on cue, Radke gives up a first inning homerun.
Miller Man replied on May 18, 2006 at 12:45:03 pm
It's uncanny the ability Radke has to give up 1st inning HRs. It would be interesting to see stats on 1st inning HRs given up by pitchers. This is unbelievable.

He gives 'em up in the second inning, too.

Miller Man,
Uncanny, yes. Ominous, too.

Also of note to today for bashers of our defense, through five complete we have three infield errors.

Good Gravy! White walked AGAIN! And a run scored!

BTW, SBG, I liked your post title today, despite the Sonny and Cher allusion. It reminds me of the old management adage, "The beatings will continue until morale improves."
Banjo replied on May 18, 2006 at 4:33:14 pm
Bono was brilliant - playing the stooge to Cher, all the while cultivating and crafting her image. All the more credit since I think he actually wrote the song.

I think that The Edge co-wrote it. Sorry, couldn't help myself.
