Spam Attacks

Posted by SBG on Monday, May 29th, 2006 at 1:07 pm

I am continuing to get absolutely hammered by Spam attacks. You may have noticed that, but let me assure that it is even worse than you might guess. I am getting about 10 comments an hour (or more sometimes) that are being directed toward my site and even though I have some plugins in place to combat spam, it appears to be getting worse.

I have decided to take a step to combat this by requiring that anyone who comments will have their comment held for moderation unless they have previously had a comment approved by me. I don't like to have to do this, but I feel like I have no other choice.

So, what I would like you to do is this. If you are someone who comments at this site, leave me a comment here so that I can approve you and let you comment freely in the future unabated. If you comment from more than one computer, I may have to "approve" you from multiple sites, I don't know that for sure.

If you do leave a comment here, and I hope you do, for the fun of it, finish this sentence, "SBG has an okay site, but for the love of God...." You don't have to finish that sentence of course, but have some fun at my expense. Regardless of whether you want to take a free shot, please leave a comment so that I can approve you.

SBG

Update: If your comment shows up right away that means I must have previously okayed a comment from you when I was fighting spam.

Hee hee! I'll work on that.

Nick, if you will kindly let me know when I've attained urgency and consistency, I'll be delighted! :)

Oh, and FREE JASON BARTLETT!

Nick, you took my urgency line. Damn.

I'll give it another try:

... please stop sliding head-first into first.

Whiffers replied on May 29th, 2006 at 2:14 pm

And just FYI, it looks like you won't have to approve each computer. I'm posting from a never-before-commented-from computer here a day after going to the Indy 500.

“SBG has an okay site, but for the love of God. . .”

. . . show the manager some respect. He's out there, battling his ass off trying to win as many games as he can.

I didn't say you could add a second sentence, AMR! That's okay though. :)

. . . get away from me, Carl Monday!

Whiffers replied on May 29th, 2006 at 3:31 pm

I can not, and probably will not be able to get enough Carl Monday references.

Oh, and this looks to be as good a place as any for this: http://www.progressiveboink.com/dugout/archive/jon45.html

There were no links this weekend at TG, but I felt like everyone should see it.

Give me the "thumbs up" SBG.

I get spammed way too often as well. WordPress needs to find a better way of combatting the problem.

SBG replied on May 29th, 2006 at 7:54 pm

Thumbs up, Miller Man. If you get to town this summer, Lucy and I would love to have a beer with you.

bjhess replied on May 29th, 2006 at 10:10 pm

Crazy. On my old site with b2evolution I was getting spammed so much that my web host shut my site down for days at a time on several occasions. The spammers were bringing their servers down. Since I went/was forced to WordPress and added the SpamKarma plug-in I'd say about a spam a month gets through the wall.

I had hundreds of spam emails this weekend. Since I required the first approval, it shut off completely.

SBG has an okay site, but for the love of God, he needs to lay off the Twins defense. It's the best in the league - Bremer just said so.

Just admit that you like Jeter and that he's a great clutch hitter and be done with it.
