Twins Rent Nevin

September 1st, 2006 by SBG

The Twins acquired Phil Nevin from the Chicago Cubs for a PTBNL. Nevin is hitting .245/.321/.456/.777. Since the All-Star Break, he's been hitting .314/.362/.547/.909. Remember, though, that he was traded to the Chicago Cubs from the Texas Rangers on May 31. As a member of the Rangers, he hit .216/.307/.415/.722. Hopefully, his resurgence in Chicago had more to do with him playing better and less to do with him playing in an AAAA league.

In any event, the Rondell White signing is now officially an unqualified disaster. As if it weren't already. The Twins had to give away somebody in the minors (presumably) to find a replacement.

Incidentally, Nevin made more money this year than Torii Hunter. Chew on that for a while.

Not sure how happy I am at increasing the Twins' "Cubs Factor" going into a potential post season. Twins cut back a bit letting former Cub Lohse go, but still...

On another note, anyone care to play the trifecta tonite? Moss predicts the first three homers hit against Silva will be by Cano, Williams, and Damon.

Cano, Jeter, Abreau (sp?)

brianS replied on September 1, 2006 at 11:01:25 am

Abreau, Posada, Bernie Williams.

On a brighter note for Twins fans, 'though I wouldn't wish anything bad on Mariano, word is that he has a mild muscle strain on his right elbow.

Being the stud that he is, that didn't stop him from pitching last night, after the MRI. Sheesh.

but it will mean that Torre has to be very careful with Mariano this weekend against the Twins. I wouldn't expect to see him on consecutive nights, which basically implies only one Mariano appearance in the three-game set.

Assuming the Yankees have more than one "save opportunity" for Rivera, of course.

Right, because the Twins are going to drill the Yanks. That's your thinking, right, fw?

I thought Sid said to expect a series of 15-6 Yankees wins. (And Gardy let him get away with that?!) I'll put my trust in Sid's judgment.

I’ll put my trust in Sid’s judgment.

Taken out of context, these could be words to regret.

When has Sid ever steered me wrong?

You got me there. :)

A-Rod, A-Rod, and A-Rod. No wait, Silva would have to stay in longer. Nevermind.

brianS replied on September 1, 2006 at 2:37:31 pm

you don't think Silva could face A-Rod 3 times in 4 innings? That's a serious lack of confidence in Silva's staying power!

Most of what dragged Nevin's stats down early in the season was a flukishly low singles rate. He's been hitting for decent power the whole year, and has a reasonable, though still not great, walk rate. I could see him being a Cuddyer-like bat overall. But I could also see scenarios reminding us of Brett Boone and Rondell White. Dumpster diving is called dumpster diving for a reason, after all.

The most interesting thing will be to see how Gardy uses Nevin as long as Rondell is still around. Gardy's always been a big guy on loyalty.

Nevin is on the roster by way of moving Shannon Stewart to the 60-day DL. Cubs sent money too. So the only cost is the PTBNL. I'd have to guess that the PTBNL will depend on Nevin's performance, but that it probably won't be anything significant even if Nevin blows up.

Too bad Ryan couldn't have swung Michael Restovich as part of the deal. I'd have given him a September callup. He'd be almost as likely as Nevin to make an impact at DH.

Moss replied on September 1, 2006 at 12:09:15 pm

Moss has always wondered why there is both a 15-day and a 60-day DL. Is it that persons on the 60-day DL don't count against the 40-man while those on the 15-day DL do? That is what Moss is inferring from the Stewart designation.

SBG replied on September 1, 2006 at 12:20:20 pm

That is correct, Moss.
