Hmmm...something about morning baseball just doesn't feel quite right.

twayn
twayn replied on September 30th, 2006 at 11:16 am

Agreed. They should have scheduled the football game for 11:00 and the baseball game for 7:00. Would have made much more sense.

'Attaboy, Garza. Good to see him get the K with his changeup.

Kevin G
Kevin G replied on September 30th, 2006 at 11:20 am

Well, Gordo told me it was a changeup, at any rate. I'll just have to trust him.

Wow. No Dye, no Thome, no Konerko, no Crede. Ozzie's got his JV squad in today.

This game is blacked out for me on MLB.tv and Extra Innings decided not to pick it up for some reason. I mean, who wants to watch the Twins play the White Sox in a game with the division on the line?

So I called DirecTV and gave them my old address in Excelsior (I live in SoCal now and haven't lived in MN since I was a kid) -- seconds later, I'm watching the Twins game on FSN North.

What a dumb system.

Moss used to get the Vikings games that way when Moss lived in NJ.

Garza handling it well.

twayn
twayn replied on September 30th, 2006 at 11:34 am

Good thing we don't have the Dye-Thome-Konerko troika in the lineup today. This could be a 3-0 ballgame or worse already.

Whiffers
Whiffers replied on September 30th, 2006 at 11:35 am

Garza seems to be struggling with his fastball control, but his willingness to throw breaking pitches at any count is huge.

Hopefully we see more patient at-bats by the Twins this inning.

twayn
twayn replied on September 30th, 2006 at 11:36 am

He's getting those breaking balls across for strikes as well as I've ever seen him.

Dick: "Had Morneau delivered a hit it would've been one of the greatest moments in Twins history" (paraphrased). Is he Bertin' serious?

twayn
twayn replied on September 30th, 2006 at 11:39 am

If he's talking about last night's game, he's not much off the mark. I was there and it was intense.

twinsnation
twinsnation replied on September 30th, 2006 at 11:45 am

Sure it could've given them a lead over the Tigers and possibly kept them in the race for home-field advantage, but one of the greatest moments? No way.

12 pitch inning thanks to Torii`s fouls. Maybe these guys all have tickets to the Gopher game later today.

Whiffers
Whiffers replied on September 30th, 2006 at 11:43 am

Just a quick questions--do you think the Twins game will outdraw the Gophers game tonight?

twinsnation
twinsnation replied on September 30th, 2006 at 11:46 am

At the start of the game or at the end of the first half when the Gophers are trailing 42-3?

Not inspiring confidence for that 4th post season pitching spot.

Kevin G
Kevin G replied on September 30th, 2006 at 11:57 am

Especially considering that Garza's facing the "White Sox Lite" lineup.

SBG

Maybe Garza doesn't wake up until noon.

Geoff
Geoff replied on September 30th, 2006 at 11:59 am

Can someone give me a good reason NOT to start Baker in game 4 vs NYY? With 2 wins there's more reason to believe he can do something over Garza and Silva IMHO.

brink
brink replied on September 30th, 2006 at 12:00 pm

Serious question: have the Twins won a game yet in these awful sleeveless alt uniforms? Silva and Garza are the only pitchers who have opted to go with them and I know Silva didn't win his starts. Garza hasn't pitched well at home so I think the Twins are oh-for-sleeveless.

Geoff
Geoff replied on September 30th, 2006 at 12:01 pm

Long way to go but so you all know. Bad luck Geoff will NOT be in town for any post season games :-)

Kevin G

A sign that it's been a bad day:
AB's for Podsednik: 3
AB's for Kubel, Tyner, and Bartlett combined: 0

That's about as ugly a trip through the lineup as I can remember.

Kevin G
Kevin G replied on September 30th, 2006 at 12:18 pm

At least LRod came to play today.

Kevin G
Kevin G replied on September 30th, 2006 at 12:22 pm

I'm higher on LRod than most, I think. Not the right time for this discussion, but if he could give the Twins, say, 85% of Castillo's production at 15% of the cost, he might be an everyday option. He's got a Punto-like breakout season in him, I think. I could be way overestimating LRod's potential though.

Geoff
Geoff replied on September 30th, 2006 at 12:18 pm

Hit followed by GIDP. Grrrrrrrrr. 38 pitches thru 4. This officially sucks. Time to turn it around.

Beau

good throw by Cuddyer right to the cutoff man (hey, I'm grasping straws)

Kevin G
Kevin G replied on September 30th, 2006 at 12:28 pm

Iguchi: Pick me off. Please!

(Apparently in Japan it's courteous to allow oneself to get picked off when the opposition seems uninterested in the actual game.)

Geoff

Whiffers

Sliding head first cost Punto a hit when the Twins needed it.

twinsnation

I wish someone could convince Punto of that.

punmanbowler
punmanbowler replied on September 30th, 2006 at 12:54 pm

It's not so much that the White Sox have 5 runs that bothers me.

It's the zero that the Twins have scored. This makes 3 games in a row that the Twins have not been able to score in the first 6 innings. And the game before that they got one in the first and then nothing until the seventh (in a 6-4 losing effort)

bjhess
bjhess replied on September 30th, 2006 at 12:55 pm

It will be frustrating if Detroit loses 2 of 3 to KC and the Twins still don't pass them. Here's hoping Detroit loses 3 of 3. It would be payback for when the Twins let Detroit jump all over them to avoid breaking the losses record a few years ago.

Is there a rule against scoring before the 9th?

Kevin G
Kevin G replied on September 30th, 2006 at 1:45 pm

No doubt. This is getting ridiculous. Let's hope the Twins are just executing a team-wide rope-a-dope strategy, lulling their playoff opponents into thinking the Twins' offense has gone into the toilet.

Kevin G
Kevin G replied on September 30th, 2006 at 1:46 pm

...and lulling them into a false sense of security.
