WORLD SERIES Game 5: Detroit Tigers at St. Louis Cardinals

Posted by SBG on Friday, October 27th, 2006 at 6:17 pm

The Tigers turn to their rookie Justin Verlander in an elimination game. Meanwhile, every St. Louis Cardinals fan who disparaged the 1987 Twins for their poor regular season record will probably forget their nearly score old complaints should the Cardinals win tonight.

apropos of your opening comment, SBG, how many images of the Miracle Mets and the 1987 Twins should we expect to see tonight ON FOX, particularly if the Cards take an early lead??

I really want to see some Steve Lombardozzi highlights.

Only if they involve Dan Gladden punching him out.

Jeff Weaver is starting a close out game in the World Series. What else do I need to say?

SBG replied on October 27th, 2006 at 8:13 pm

Terrible throw by Inge allows the first run to score from third with two out. A good throw and the runner (Eckstein) is out at first. McCarver says that the better play was to go home. Huh? This is an example of McCarver's annoying tendancy to over analyze.

Jeff A replied on October 27th, 2006 at 8:15 pm

Obviously, Eckstein just knows how to win.

Oh boy. Inge doubles and then gets hung up on a come backer off the bat of the pitcher.

Inge hits balls that have a "power-type carry" according to McCarver. Oh my. It's like channeling the worst of Blyleven and Madden.

That's just Brandon Inge being Brandon Inge.

The rain delay on Wednesday not only prevented me from watching on Wednesday, but I made plans for this evening so I won't be able to follow along. I'm no big fan of Verlander (definitely overrated by traditional "pitching" stats), but Jeff Weaver is pretty bad. So there you go. Tonight's game should be about offense, but what in this postseason has gone according to plan anyway?

Sean Casey the man for the Tigs.

I've figured something that bothers me about Joe Buck. After every play: "And Molina has a 2-hit night." "And the Tigers take a one-run lead." He doesn't describe the play, he mentions the result. I think he does this for football, too.

Cripes, not another bad throw on the left side of the infield. Ugh.

Okay, if it ends tonight, I want to at least go 13 innings.

Have the Tigers set a World Series record for most errors by pitchers?

They have to have.

This is my first post since Hunter bunted Morneau over in game 3 (2 weeks of drinking, 1 week of hangover). Besides the fact that the Twins lost to the team that lost in the ALCS to the team that is 4 strikes away from losing the World Series, I guess the playoffs are a crapshoot.

Baseball's done, so where can I find some curling on TV? (It's like baseball where all you do is pitch. Rocks. On ice.)

I'll probably start caring about Football soon though, or maybe the Minnesota/Slovakia Wild. Or I could visit with my family again. We'll have to see.

I'm not sure what I think of Eckstein as MVP, I've basically considered him the Nick Punto that lots of people know. Plus, that "Scrappy White Guy" award has me a little sour on him. I thought maybe Weaver, but he lost game 2 (LaRussa switched the Rotation up on me!) Wainwright, except he got a blown save by allowing an inherited run in game 4. Molina or Rolen?

My 3-year-old is starting to figure things out: "The Cardinals wear red hats because Cardinals are red birds." She also loves the birds on the bats of the Cards' jerseys, even though she was rooting for the Tigers. She had an actual realization having to do with strategy last night, something like "The pitcher wants to throw it where the hitter will miss it," but that wasn't it. And I forgot it. She is a sucker for bunts though.

AMR replied on October 27th, 2006 at 11:36 pm

Oh, and I forgot to update my prediction: Tigers in 8.

I don't really care who gets the hardware, but your Eckstein vs. Punto comparison has a lot of merit:

.292/.350/.344 -- Eckstein, '06
.290/.352/.373 -- Punto, '06

Both are fairly rangy, but Punto has by far the better arm strength. (I just checked Eckstein's contract, too, and it's actually pretty reasonable. $10M/3yr for a consistent if unspectacular fielder and a .250ish EQA at SS isn't too bad.)

We didn't call Punto the Tiny Superhero for nothing, though. If you hit .290ish, you're bound to come up with some big hits. Eckstein did it in the World Series, but it could've just as easily been Punto with some good breaks here and there. (Just like Kyle Lohse could've done exactly what Jeff Suppan did if the Reds had made the playoffs instead of the Cards.)

Does anyone think the long interval between the Yanks' last game and their upcoming series against the Cards will hurt their chances of getting The Ring?

I'm sad that there's no more baseball. I'm also sad that the Tigers couldn't represent for the AL.

The Cards have a pretty good fanbase, though, and they've had a strong team for the last few years. I'll consider this WS a sort of lifetime achievement award, the same way that Santana (the guitarist, not our Johan) won a bunch of Grammys for a mediocre album late in his career after not winning for his better work in the '70s. So for the diehard Cardinals fans, I'm happy.

Now all I have is to look forward to an exciting race in the AL Central next year. :)

As a final thought, I heard someone say last night that this 2006 Cardinals team was Tony LaRussa's best managing job ever.

Now, I didn't watch the Cardinals at all this year, but they won the worst division in baseball with 83 wins. But, they got hot and won the World Series so it's his best job.

Did anyone else notice that the Tigers absolutely handed that Series to the Cardinals? Eight errors in five games, including five by the pitchers? It was a Bengal implosion more than anything.
