SBG Nation Provides Your Daily Source for Half-Baked Crap

Wednesday Morning

Posted by SBG on Wednesday, November 29th, 2006 at 9:18 am

I had a conference call with a client late last night (different time zone) and I missed the Wolves game. Oh well. Actually, it wasn't that late and the game was on (fourth quarter) as I left work. I walked by WCCO and saw Dark Star hustling from the lounge at the North Star hotel to the WCCO building. Was Dark Star drinking before a broadcast? I don't know, I just report his movement. But, it might explain some things. (Of course, I'm not accusing him of anything, other than jaywalking.)

I caught a glimpse of the game and I saw Randy Foye and Craig Smith making plays on consecutive possessions. That's all right.

My old friend Andrew showed up last night. Andrew is a Drake student and you may remember that he wrote articles here for the World Cup. Andrew, if you are interested in writing a column or two on college basketball, you are more than welcome. Interestingly enough, another SBGer is a Drake alum. Which got me thinking. How about declaring your school, if you have one? I graduated from NDSU as you all know and I have a law degree from SBG College of Law. (Actually, William Mitchell.)

Oh, and I'm cutting down on the coffee. No more than one cup a day.

I graduated from Augustana in Sioux Falls with a Computer Science degree.

Oh - half-baked in general alert. Why is it that every sportwriter can get away with "Team X may have an interest in Player Y because Team X's manager, Coach Z, used to manage Player Y."

The latest is Rosenthal saying the Dodgers would be "a good fit" (what does that mean?) for Manny because Grady Little used to manage him and had to go through "Manny being Manny" moments before. Didn't even bother saying "By all accounts the two had a great relationship" or anything. Writers get paid for this?

BA, Math Major, Augsburg College (Minneapolis).
One futile semester of grad school at Univ of MN.

More hot stove Madlibs:
The Reds may be interested in [former Twin] because Wayne Krvisky was his former assistant GM and is familiar with his [notable feature of former Twin].

Mark Redman, All-Star pitching ability
Doug Mientkiewicz, Difficult last name
LaTroy Hawkins, Inability to Pitch the 9th with a small lead
Jacque Jones, Ability to hit Lefties for real this year
Terry Mulholland, Age and Lo-Carb Diet
Denny Hocking, Utility
David Ortiz, Slugging

(This is kindof difficult because most of the former Twins I know actually are on the Reds.)

Shannon Stewart, namesake

I remember doing madlibs when I was a kid, so here is my attempt at it...

The Reds may be interested in [poop] because Wayne Krvisky was his former assistant GM and is familiar with his [fart].

I guess it was a lot funnier when I was like 6 or 7.

How about this one?

The Reds may be interested in [J.C. Romero] because Wayne Krvisky was his former assistant GM and is familiar with his [consistent results].

University of Texas at Austin, grad school in chemistry
University of Kentucky, one year of law school
New York University School of Law, JD degree

THE University of Minnesota - Poli Sci and Journalism
SBG School of Law - JD, lord willing, in about 6 months.
A bunch of us 4Ls (part-time night school types) were sitting around talking recently about how we wouldn't ever have to register for a class ever again and relishing the thought and someone asked if we would ever consider going back to school. Silence... followed by gruding acceptance that we very well may. What the hell is wrong with us? I mean if 4 years of law school doesn't cure the itch, I'm not sure what ever would.

SBG
SBG replied on November 29th, 2006 at 12:07 pm

That fourth year must be interminable. As a full-time student, I was just about insane my 3rd year. BTW, we were absolutely there at the same time. I graduated in 2004.

Neil
Neil replied on November 29th, 2006 at 12:29 pm

I've floated the idea that 4Ls should have immunity from classroom discussion... a very popular notion amongst 4Ls. Less so with other groups.
I was part of the infamous worst Contracts class in a certain professor's 17 years... you may have heard of us.
And yes, I've had senioritis for the last 3 semesters or so.

I spent a year at Winona State, then drifted into culinary school (Le Cordon Bleu, if anyone is curious). After some time as a chef in various capacities, I joined the Marines in the year-long enlistment jump following 9/11. Four years later, I'm restarting my undergrad degree at UW-Madison.

Looks like Buster Olney thinks the whole "Manny being Manny" thing (I hate that phrase with an undying passion, but what is one to do?) might depress the market for him. I say hogwash. If the Yankees can divest themselves of a guy like Gary Sheffield, who is notorious for his petulance (not to mention less valuable as a player), there's bound to be a healthy market for Manny.

Even if the Sox sign Jd Drew and can't trade Manny (which seems to me a major longshot, barring any Chuck Lamar-style GMing on Theo Epstein's part), they're still going to get an amazing amount of value from a Ramirez/Crisp/Drew outfield.

Matter of fact, I think they'll come away with a greater burden, contract-wise, with JD Drew than they currently face with Manny.

Another thing to consider - who protects Ortiz if Manny leaves?

There was always a rivalry between Augie and SDSU. Well, I should say SDSU was Augie's rivalry. I highly doubt Augie was considered a rival to the folks at SDSU. Maybe it was true back in the late 90's era of quality Augie basketball teams, though.

My alma mater is St. Cloud State University. This is SCSU's motto: A Tradition of Excellence and Opportunity. Not quite the same panache as Veritas, but it was the best education my parents and I could afford. I graduated with a BS in mass communications and carried a second major in English. My third major was social studies, the kind where the classrooms featured kegs of beer, assorted paraphernalia, and morally dubious coeds.

I started off with a BA in Industrial Engineering plus a BS at Miserably Strange Community and Technical College in Virginia MN. That was followed by a loooooooooooooong layoff caused by a pretty severe hatred of school and teachers who sucked the life out of their students. However, I did make a promise that I would finish some day - just not at the Distopian learning facility I started at.

I finally finished my bachelor's degree in Manufacturing Management 7 or 8 eight years later at the University of MN Crookston and online.

My wife and I live in the suburbs of Sethspeakstown MN. I am now nearly 30, and I am working hard at forgetting all I have learned. Mrs. mini_tb is the one who picks the A's as her second favorite team because their green and yellow uniforms are cute. She also agrees that Morneau was the Twins' MVP this year. Maybe the A's uniforms are cute after all...

Doesn't Naylor, uh, remind, uh, you of Don, uh, Knotts? Sorry to everyone else.

I still would like the Twins to see what the cost of acquiring Bill Hall or Ty Wigginton would be, as neither seems to have much playing time available on their current teams. Both may be cheap and could fill in at 3B with some pop. Also saw that Rondell wanted to come back to the Twins; don't have the link right now, but I do recall him saying something to the effect of, "you won't get the 'Un-dell' this year" Ha. I like that he gives himself the disparaging nickname. Talk about Insanity.
