Wednesday Morning

I had a conference call with a client late last night (different time zone) and I missed the Wolves game. Oh well. Actually, it wasn't that late and the game was on (fourth quarter) as I left work. I walked by WCCO and saw Dark Star hustling from the lounge at the North Star hotel to the WCCO building. Was Dark Star drinking before a broadcast? I don't know, I just report his movement. But, it might explain some things. (Of course, I'm not accusing him of anything, other than jaywalking.)
I caught a glimpse of the game and I saw Randy Foye and Craig Smith making plays on consecutive possessions. That's all right.
My old friend Andrew showed up last night. Andrew is a Drake student and you may remember that he wrote articles here for the World Cup. Andrew, if you are interested in writing a column or two on college basketball, you are more than welcome. Interestingly enough, another SBGer is a Drake alum. Which got me thinking. How about declaring your school, if you have one? I graduated from NDSU as you all know and I have a law degree from SBG College of Law. (Actually, William Mitchell.)
Oh, and I'm cutting down on the coffee. No more than one cup a day.

I graduated from Augustana in Sioux Falls with a Computer Science degree.
Oh - half-baked in general alert. Why is it that every sportwriter can get away with "Team X may have an interest in Player Y because Team X's manager, Coach Z, used to manage Player Y."
The latest is Rosenthal saying the Dodgers would be "a good fit" (what does that mean?) for Manny because Grady Little used to manage him and had to go through "Manny being Manny" moments before. Didn't even bother saying "By all accounts the two had a great relationship" or anything. Writers get paid for this?
Writers get paid for this?
The lucky ones do.
BA, Math Major, Augsburg College (Minneapolis).
One futile semester of grad school at Univ of MN.
More hot stove Madlibs:
The Reds may be interested in [former Twin] because Wayne Krvisky was his former assistant GM and is familiar with his [notable feature of former Twin].
Mark Redman, All-Star pitching ability
Doug Mientkiewicz, Difficult last name
LaTroy Hawkins, Inability to Pitch the 9th with a small lead
Jacque Jones, Ability to hit Lefties for real this year
Terry Mulholland, Age and Lo-Carb Diet
Denny Hocking, Utility
David Ortiz, Slugging
(This is kindof difficult because most of the former Twins I know actually are on the Reds.)
Tony Bastista, Comic Relief ability
Shannon Stewart, namesake
Bert Blyeven, ability to eff things up
Joe Roa, eyebrows
Michael Restovich, willingness to shore up the AAA squad
I remember doing madlibs when I was a kid, so here is my attempt at it...
The Reds may be interested in [poop] because Wayne Krvisky was his former assistant GM and is familiar with his [fart].
I guess it was a lot funnier when I was like 6 or 7.
How about this one?
The Reds may be interested in [J.C. Romero] because Wayne Krvisky was his former assistant GM and is familiar with his [consistent results].
Moss was a career student -- maybe not as bad as SBG, but still didn't get a real job until age 30.
Saint John's University (the one in MN), BA in chemistry (math and physics minors)
University of Texas at Austin, grad school in chemistry
University of Kentucky, one year of law school
New York University School of Law, JD degree
By 30 I had two degrees and six years of experience working in the real world, thank you very much.
I should point out that I graduated from NDSU twice, BSEEE and MBA.
Yeah, but you kept going back for more.
I'm done now, I promise.
BS in physics and BS in math from the University of Minnesota and currently in the third year of pursuing a PhD in physics from the University of Washington.
Good work on the coffee, SBG, that stuff's evil.
THE University of Minnesota - Poli Sci and Journalism
SBG School of Law - JD, lord willing, in about 6 months.
A bunch of us 4Ls (part-time night school types) were sitting around talking recently about how we wouldn't ever have to register for a class ever again and relishing the thought and someone asked if we would ever consider going back to school. Silence... followed by gruding acceptance that we very well may. What the hell is wrong with us? I mean if 4 years of law school doesn't cure the itch, I'm not sure what ever would.
That fourth year must be interminable. As a full-time student, I was just about insane my 3rd year. BTW, we were absolutely there at the same time. I graduated in 2004.
I've floated the idea that 4Ls should have immunity from classroom discussion... a very popular notion amongst 4Ls. Less so with other groups.
I was part of the infamous worst Contracts class in a certain professor's 17 years... you may have heard of us.
And yes, I've had senioritis for the last 3 semesters or so.
Yeah, I heard about it, including the "letter". I had him for Bus Org. and I thought he was okay.
I spent a year at Winona State, then drifted into culinary school (Le Cordon Bleu, if anyone is curious). After some time as a chef in various capacities, I joined the Marines in the year-long enlistment jump following 9/11. Four years later, I'm restarting my undergrad degree at UW-Madison.
Looks like Buster Olney thinks the whole "Manny being Manny" thing (I hate that phrase with an undying passion, but what is one to do?) might depress the market for him. I say hogwash. If the Yankees can divest themselves of a guy like Gary Sheffield, who is notorious for his petulance (not to mention less valuable as a player), there's bound to be a healthy market for Manny.
Even if the Sox sign Jd Drew and can't trade Manny (which seems to me a major longshot, barring any Chuck Lamar-style GMing on Theo Epstein's part), they're still going to get an amazing amount of value from a Ramirez/Crisp/Drew outfield.
Matter of fact, I think they'll come away with a greater burden, contract-wise, with JD Drew than they currently face with Manny.
Another thing to consider - who protects Ortiz if Manny leaves?
The Boston Mafia. For some consideration, of course.
Do they get 15% of his RBIs?
Were you in Iraq?
I was. Fallujah and then other parts of Western Al Anbar in 2004.
I'm currently working on a Computer Science/Software Engineering double major at SDSU.
I was EEE/computer option at NDSU. I worked with a fair number of SDSU grads back in the day. I have a generally favorable impression of the school (off of the football field that is).
I have many friends in Fargo attending NDSU, so I can't hate it too much. Still think the Bison should have given it to the Rabbits a little harder at the Fargodome though.
There was always a rivalry between Augie and SDSU. Well, I should say SDSU was Augie's rivalry. I highly doubt Augie was considered a rival to the folks at SDSU. Maybe it was true back in the late 90's era of quality Augie basketball teams, though.
My alma mater is St. Cloud State University. This is SCSU's motto: A Tradition of Excellence and Opportunity. Not quite the same panache as Veritas, but it was the best education my parents and I could afford. I graduated with a BS in mass communications and carried a second major in English. My third major was social studies, the kind where the classrooms featured kegs of beer, assorted paraphernalia, and morally dubious coeds.
I only wish that I could have gone to Faber College: "Knowledge is Good".
LOL. SBG, your Delta Tau Chi name is... Shyster. And I'm probably now on WGOM double secret probation.
Is that a pledge pin on your UNIFORM???!!!!!!????
I find it hard to believe there was beer available at SCSU!! Twayn, I went there from '86-'92 on and off. Saw the riots first hand, watched Herbie take the program to D1, partook in waaaay to many thirsty thursdays at the Red Carpet.... ohhh what a wierd, yet glorious era in St. Cloud.
I started off with a BA in Industrial Engineering plus a BS at Miserably Strange Community and Technical College in Virginia MN. That was followed by a loooooooooooooong layoff caused by a pretty severe hatred of school and teachers who sucked the life out of their students. However, I did make a promise that I would finish some day - just not at the Distopian learning facility I started at.
I finally finished my bachelor's degree in Manufacturing Management 7 or 8 eight years later at the University of MN Crookston and online.
My wife and I live in the suburbs of Sethspeakstown MN. I am now nearly 30, and I am working hard at forgetting all I have learned. Mrs. mini_tb is the one who picks the A's as her second favorite team because their green and yellow uniforms are cute. She also agrees that Morneau was the Twins' MVP this year. Maybe the A's uniforms are cute after all...
Like most of you already know, I spent the last six years at The George Washington University in DC. I finished with a BA in International Affairs, a BA in History and recently a Masters of Tourism Administration with a focus on Sport Management.
Lot of good it's done me so far...
That's okay...you're future wife will make the big bucks!
That's the plan!
Let's just hope that you are still her MVP.
(Morneau joke there.)
Got my BA in Sociology from DePauw University, a liberal arts school in Greencastle, IN...Dan Quayle's alma mater. Not a strong spelling program there.
I hear that Quayle used to get a bag of potatoe chips for the back nine.
Working on a Journalism major at the U of M, currently in year #3.
It's frickin' cold out today.
I got a BA in BA (business administration) from Jamestown College (Jamestown, North Dakota). That's right, I'm a JIMMIE! (Lamest. Mascot. Ever. I'm still not sure what a Jimmie is: we had a picture of a knight on our sports paraphernalia.) Now I'm a semester away from finishing my Master of Theology degree here at Dallas Seminary. We're hoping to move back to Minnesota or North Dakota next summer.
Nice little campus there in Jimmietown. Always liked that spot.
I started here at Drake as a physics, math, and astronomy major. After a year and a half I switched to history. I already had enough of the math done to get a minor in it. I just added a geography minor that I'm starting and completing this year. Graduation is in May. After that, I don't know yet.
ok, I'll play. BA from Carleton (with a brief detour at Spamtown C.C.). It was the best education my folks and I could afford, too. I logged many hours working for housekeeping (cleaning toilets, shampooing beer-soaked carpets, etc.), then wangled a cush job doing late-night backups
Ph.D. in political science from UC-San Diego. They paid the most AND I got to live in San Diego for 5 years. America: what a great country.
Finance & Accounting degrees from Drake. Started out as a math major so I may have had some of the same professors as Andrew, but I can't remember any of them right now. I remember having Parsa in statistics but that's about it for anyone who would still be around there.
My roommate is an act-sci major, so I've heard about Parsa. As for math professors, there's Kleiner, DeAlba, Naylor, Alexander. You might have had Kopeskey. He retired last year.
Another Drake University alum, Actuarial Science/Finance class of 2004.
Doesn't Naylor, uh, remind, uh, you of Don, uh, Knotts? Sorry to everyone else.
I still would like the Twins to see what the cost of acquiring Bill Hall or Ty Wigginton would be, as neither seems to have much playing time available on their current teams. Both may be cheap and could fill in at 3B with some pop. Also saw that Rondell wanted to come back to the Twins; don't have the link right now, but I do recall him saying something to the effect of, "you won't get the 'Un-dell' this year" Ha. I like that he gives himself the disparaging nickname. Talk about Insanity.
BA in Political Science from Bethel College (it upgraded to "Bethel University" after I graduated) with theology and psychology minors.
Moss' wife is a professor at Bethel U. We're going to the Festival of Christmas tomorrow night -- it's the 50th annual.
My wife also works there- going to be at the smorgasbord tomorrow night, but not the Festival itself.
Moss'll be at the smorgasbord (late sitting) as well.
What department does your wife work in?
She's in the registrar's office, where I am sitting right now waiting to go eat swedish meatballs and rutabagas.
smorgasbord
Please report back 1) number of, and 2) kinds of, jello.
Zero jellos. This is real stuff -- lefse, lutefisk, etc.
Moss loves the whipped rutabagas! And the desserts.
Also a St. Cloud State Husky... tried a couple of majors... got sucked into the restaurant biz... quit school "temporarily"... never found by way back. The good news is my wife has a masters degree in Physical Therapy (Concordia --> St. Kates) and married down because she likes my cooking. If they offered a degree in worthless trivia or half-baked crap, I would sign on in a second and finish my education.
Next time we're driving through we'll stop in again.
BA at UMD for Mathematics & C.Sci. MS at Univ. of Minn. for Mgmt of Technology.
Re: Dark Star - seems like on-air personalities would be above jaywalking - has he apologized to the public yet?
ComSci BS from Moorhead State Univ. (or whatever it's called now; MSUM?)
Went from a small farm of ~160 people to radar programming on the Stealth Bomber in LA. Culture shock, anyone?
btw, toured Missou with daughter a few weeks ago -- did you know it was where they wanted to film "Animal House" originally? Seems the administration got a hold of the script, though
er, small farming community
What? Isn't Knowledge Good at Missou? Lucy went to College at Stephens in Columbia.
Speaking of double-secret probation, here's one from my college days:
Q: Why did NDSU put in artificial turf at their football field?
A: To keep the homecoming attendants from grazing during halftime.
BA Econ from Carleton. Currently working on my JD at the U of MN. I enjoy the site. It's stuff like the tidbit about Dark Star that keep me coming back.
Thanks. The site of Dark Star "running" across the street was extremely humorous.
Was the site humorous or was the sight humorous?
Or was that cite a bit jocular?
That's what you get when you cross an EEE with law school. inciteful insight onsite.
What would we do w/out lawyers??
First, kill all the ... clubhouse lawyers?
Well, for one thing, the fodder for jokes would go way down.
I know I've gotten to the game late, but I want to play anyway. I have graduated twice from the University of South Dakota in Vermillion, once from the business school and once from the law school. I am currently pursuing a Master of Divinity degree from North American Baptist Seminary in Sioux Falls.
Interesting skool data above...
Compared to average Joe, I wonder if th' denizens of WGOM would have lower/higher:
- credit rating
- auto insurance risk
- likelihood of having 'Get th Knack' in basemt box of vinyl
- sudoku predilection
- NASCAR budget
Get the Knack -- ah, yes. Had it on 8 track.
