Glenn Mason is Out

Posted by SBG on Sunday, December 31st, 2006 at 4:58 pm

FOX 9 is reporting that the University of Minnesota will fire head football coach Glenn Mason. Is Joel Maturi next?

Update: Mason's buyout was $2.2 million.

Update: Mason has a friend in Ivan Maisel of ESPN.COM. Good gravy, I hope Mason paid Maisel something for that article.

Update: Reusse sums it up in one word. Smug.

Well, it's stupid that this season really changed their opinion of Mason that much from January, but this decision at least shows understanding of the concept of a sunk cost.

Do you have a cite for the buyout, SBG? I'm confused. Based on this when Mason's extension was new:

The deal, which is expected to be finalized Tuesday, calls for $1.35 million annually in guaranteed salary. Mason will earn another $300,000 in retirement and deferred compensation. The performance incentives could push the value of the deal over $2 million annually. Mason was believed to be seeking guaranteed money in the neighborhood of $1.8 million.

This firing article seems to be at least somewhat inconsistent with the idea of guaranteed money (and doesn't mention a buyout):

The firing came on New Year's Eve to avoid having Mason's contract roll over to another season. Mason earns his base salary of $1,987,344 and a 90-day notice's worth of supplemental income ($229,500), plus $1.4 million in already-earned deferred compensation.

Taken together, I don't see how these statements are congruent, but I could be missing something importnat.

Moss hopes Maturi got paid a little sumpin' for that extension a year ago. What a joke.

On the odd chance that the NDSU coach comes to the U, would SBG become a Goofer fan??

That's already happened once with disastrous results (Wacker). Although, Wacker was at TCU between NDSU and Minnesota.

If the Goofers are playing entertaining football, I'll watch.

Too bad, I was really liking that the Badgers could beat the Goophs on a fairly regular basis with Mason at the helm.

Maybe Tony Dungy is getting tired of having no defense in Indy. Of course, he's probably got too much dignity to stomach the college recruiting game....

what about Mike Hohensee? He's got extensive head coaching experience in the Arena League as well as Goofer roots.

Dungy said he's not interested.

That's what Nick Saban told 'bama too.

True enough. Then again, that was Alabama and $35 million. Dungy is a creature of the NFL whereas Saban was first a college coach. So, you are right that being "not interested" is not necessarily a final word, but the circumstances here are a little different.
