I'm really hoping my hometown team, the Colts, can find a way to win. This will be the first time I've actually had a real rooting interest in the Super Bowl.

And completely off that topic, I'm not sure if there are any other racing fans out in SBGville, but I made my first trek to the Rolex 24 at Daytona this past weekend. It is quite an event even though it got really cold (by Florida standards) and then rainy. Here's a Flickr gallery of some photos from the first few hours of the race.

I think it is rare that in the BIG game, a clearly inferior quarterback can out play a clearly superior opponent. Thus, I pick Manning and the Colts. I am pulling for Tony Dungy (should have been the Vikes coach the past 10 years). He is a class act. I think he may take a few years off of coaching if they win it all. I wish him the best.

I think with good weather conditions, Manning is going to show the flaws in the Bears defense.

Still, I can hear the announcers..."If it weren't for Urlacher's incredible play, the Colts would have scored a 100 points instead of 50"... puleeeez... he is so overrated. Every game I watch the Bears, he is running to the wrong spot half the time. He is talented, he is good, but he is an above average defensive player at best. Not an MVP, not worthy of being discussed with the greatest to play the game.

I've got no real root-against team here. I'd like to see Dungy and Manning shut people up. I'd like to see Lovie and Rexy shut people up. Or, I'd like to see Rexy and Griese get hurt enough that Kyle Orton is playing in the Super Bowl. Does upper midwest (ALCentral/NFCNorth) allegances make me root for the bears? Even though Indy can't be any further than Detroit.

I'm picking the Bears to win, just because it seems coutnerintuitive. Does Orton hold the ball for PATs and FGs? Maybe they can have him fake for a game-winner, or screw up like Romo on a late, tying FG but then run it in for the TD.

From they NYT:

REYES APPEARS IN COMMERCIAL
At 8:45 a.m. yesterday, Mets shortstop José Reyes sat shivering on a sidewalk in Greenwich Village.

Next to him was Twins starting pitcher Johan Santana, who was grilling a hamburger. It was about 20 degrees outside, and the wind chill made it seem like the low teens.

So what were Reyes and Santana doing there?

Along with five other players — Minnesota’s Justin Morneau, Detroit’s Justin Verlander, Boston’s Jonathan Papelbon, St. Louis’s David Eckstein and the Yankees’ Robinson Canó — they were filming a commercial for new baseball caps under the direction of Spike Lee.

The hats, manufactured by New Era, are designed to absorb sweat more efficiently, and they have a new black underside to the bill intended to reduce glare. Over and over, from 7 a.m. till noon, the players filmed the ad with 10-minute breaks from the cold.

“I got an idea about how to stay warm,” said Morneau, the 2006 American League most valuable player, as he shuffled between the street and a dressing room at the back of the store. “I could find all the White Sox hats and light them on fire.”

Can't say I like black underbills. Grey is really nice, I like that players can personalize a little bit. I'm sure that's what this is about. MLB turning into No Fun League. Plus, how much glare do you get from your underbill? And won't teams with navy hats look awful with black underbills? (Black and Navy clash IMO, albeit subtly.)

However, I will be able to find out if the Yankees wear black or very dark navy once and for all. I just won't buy any of these. I may need to get a 2006 m cap before they stop making them.

BTW, doesn't Eck stand out like a sore thumb between the up and coming young superstars?

Eck is just a little boy. He'll bet bigger and better, right?

Does Scott Erickson get royalties from these hats?

(didn't he color his underbill black as part of his "day o' death" schtick?)

My dad and I loved to refer to him as Sheila. Erickson and his up and down performances paved the way for the Terry Tiffee fand club.

SBG, just thought you should know that your Home link takes you to your About page. I was surfing through your tabs and I was really confused until I figured out what was going on. I think you're missing the "www".

Actually, I was playing around with a new feature. I set it like that temporarily. It's back to the blog now.

How about a comment from Jazzercize instructor Geoff on this quote? My impression (without actually seeing any Jazz games, mind you) is that Fisher has been pretty mediocre.

Law's mental toughness and leadership qualities remind me of Derek Fisher, whose charisma has been an underrated reason for the success of the Utah Jazz this season.

Slow sports news day at the STRIB: "Mad Dog, Marko making things happen".

Ah... The Strib keeps up its tradition of spewing the local teams' talking points. New coach, different minutes allocation, story supporting that decision. Reminds me of the story about Batista's swing that yielded the infamous quote after he hit a couple of dingers.

No matter the season, some folks need their Scrubini Fix.

KG is not shooting well tonight, but he is a lot more active on the offensive end. So far, he's 7-20 in the third quarter and has 16 points. That's not very good, but what is good is that he's taking more shots. In addtion, he and Mark Blount are again showing good passing between each other.

Poor shooting night, but KG hits bucket with 25 seconds left to give Wolves the lead.

Foye turns over the ball and Wolves have to foul. Foye was clearly fouled, no call.

Foye steps out of bounds and turns it over again.

Damn.
