"In the 19th century an Austrian physicist called Ludwig Boltzmann was studying the then-fashionable topic of gas behaviour. This was a time when the existence of atoms was not well established and the burning question was whether the behaviour of gases could best be explained if they really did exist. Boltzmann realised that knowing the temperature, volume, and pressure of a boxful of gas was still not enough information for him to build a single model of what was going on. He therefore embraced all the models that fitted his data and found a way to pick between them using statistics."
