If you need old mugshots, you can still access some through the Internet Archive: Archive of 48 current-style mugshots (2002-present) Archive of 32 older player photos (circa 1999-2001) Archive of 51 even older player photos (circa 1998) You could probably dig up more if you wanted -- it looks like these were 3 of the clear iterations of the Twins official site.

My favorite all time MLB.com mugshot is Mark Buehrle. He has the strangest facial hair of any MLB'er and he looks like an apparition. Haven't seen this year's pic.

The Travis Hafner one is pretty good too - Shrek 4 starring Travis Hafner.

RE: the new caps. I read the USA Today article you linked to and the photo shows that the new ones are still called 59Fifty. That's a bad idea: it's a different cap. Call it 60Fifty or something else. I wonder if they will still be selling the standard wool 59Fifty to fans. If the new hats aren't wool, they'd better get better quality control in sizing. For Christmas '05, my in-laws got me a navy "TC" that was the same size (on the label) as my red "TC," but it was at least 1/16 if not a whole 1/8 smaller. I felt bad about not wearing the cap that was a gift, but it gave me headaches. Finally, when summer came, I was able to wear it outside for a thunderstorm and wore it inside for the rest of the day so it could dry onto my head. I don't know polyester from anything, but I doubt soaking it and then drying it on your head will help if the size is off. I'm now afraid that shopping for baseball caps (which I do about once every two years) is going to be like shopping for women's jeans. Go to one store, grab the right size and +/- 1/8, then another store, until you find one that is right.

Two things. One, Chris Heintz has a face only a mother could love. Two, the black underbills on the hat are a new feature from New Era. I read about them a couple of months ago. The new hats are made of polyester instead of wool to reduce shrinkage and staining. It also makes them cooler to wear on a hot day. You should start seeing the commercial for them soon. Spike Lee directed it, and Santana and Morneau will be featured.

Ah, yes, this game Looking back at the boxscore, what a line-up, considering it was during another Division Championship year. Blanco at Catcher, Offerman at first and hitting clean-up, Alex Prieto as the 2B, Mike Ryan as DH, and a 1-2 punch of Lew Ford and Guzman. I remember watching the game (my memory was correct of an afternoon weekday game), and had some errands to run but decided to stick through to the end. Great write-up on mug-shots! The Aardsma look is classic (and what a GM he would be!!!)

Super, AMR! I also enjoy the mlb.com mugshots a lot. The ones that really stick out in my mind are the 2005 ChiSox mugs (the lighting was horrible on all of them) which BatGirl rightly called out, and last year's Bruce Chen mug - The Human Pez-Dispenser. Garza's new mug is a nice improvement over last year's, but you gotta watch out -- it's a bit out of context seeing a huge smile on your face while Gameday displays the run scoring on your bases-loaded BB, for instance.

Excellent work, AMR! Mugshots are an essential part of the fan experience these days. If you see enough games in person or through Gameday, you're going to see those mugshots a lot. Two that come to mind off the top of my head are the first one that Mr. Mientkiewicz had with a goatee, which looked quite bizarre to me, and one that Miguel Tejada had a while back. I forget if it was his last year with Oakland or his first year with Baltimore, but he had such a big, creepy-looking smile with a big gap in his teeth that it sticks out in my mind over the years of mugshots.

I think Matty is trying to channel Jeff Bagwell. Remember when Bags wouldn't trim his goat a few (six? seven?) years back? Maybe Matty is trying to be the Dusty Hill to Bags' Billy Gibbons. While I'm on the music tangent, I've always thought Matt Garza looked a bit like Chris Cornell, but it doesn't really hold up in the mug shots.
