The Hold Steady - “Stuck Between Stations”

Posted by SBG on Saturday, March 31st, 2007 at 12:00 am

Thanks to E-6 for this video. E-6 writes:

Trying to bridge a gap between the classic rockers and the youngsters: The Hold Steady. In this video, Dave may announce that the boys are from Brooklyn, but one listen to the lyrics tells you that these are Minny boys through and through. So do any of their songs from their first three critically acclaimed records. Props to any band that name-checks UM poet John Berryman and brings his tortured soul to life in a pop song... For fans of E-Street Band, Lou Reed, Thin Lizzy, Guided by Voices, Chuck Klosterman and the Replacements.

(Couldn't find the Kimmel clip when C. Finn --lead vox--was wearing a Twins jersey--he'll take up inches in music mags describing his love for the team. he even mentioned in one that he's moving back to the TC when the new stadium is opened. A brief google search brought on an avalanche of said imagery. Here's one. )

I can definitely hear the E-Street Band in there and I also hear a little of Soul Asylum. Thanks, E-6.

I agree with SBG. That opening riff had Soul Asylum written all over it. Good choice.

SBG, is this getting you more interested in today's music?

I've been enjoying this little feature. I've gone out and plugged a bunch of videos in, but I have a backlog of contributions from my readers to plug in, including from you, Algonad. Yes, my interest in music has spiked up.

Graduating from college and getting a job put a serious crimp in my music listening.

Wait until you see what having a baby does to your pop culture/music NOWledge.

btw, SBG, I could probably arrange to provide you with some Disney Babies and Marlo Thomas and Friends: Free to be You and Me audio files :-)

start 'em early, however. I had weaned the kids to Ray Charles before they were (both) out of diapers.

I usually pick a couple albums that get a ton of press on year-end best-of lists and The Hold Steady was one of my picks this year. The disc instantly became one of my favorites of the past year, just good rock and roll music.

All three of their albums great. In my opinion, Craig Finn is one of the best lyricists on the scene. Literate, funny, tough and tender all at once. And like I said, he loves his Twins...

Incidentally, Dave Pirner of SA sings on a track on the latest LP.

My father got really angry with me when I dared to compare the Hold Steady to Springsteen during our family voyage to Omaha last Thanksgiving.

My long-standing joke with my wife is referring to Bruce Hornsby as the real Bruce. Because he is.

That's just the way it is. Some things will never change.
