2007 Game 6: New York Yankees at Minnesota Twins
April 9th, 2007 by SBG
The Yanks (2-3) come into this series a little beat up and with a suspect pitching staff. A-Rod is hitting the ball and all of a sudden, he’s becoming a hero in the Bronx. The smart thinking Yankee fans – and there are a lot of them – rightly recognize the foolishness that has surrounded A-Rod’s play. There are a lot of knuckleheads out there (NYC is a big city, and the tabloid journalism is alive and well there) who have discounted this inner circle HOFer. I’m not going to say that A-Rod is without his warts, but he IS an all-time great in his prime. That’s worth something. Having said all that, here’s hoping that he chokes like a dog all week long!
Meanwhile, the Twins (4-1) are sending out their bad boy, Sidney Ponson, for his first outing of the season. I for one will be quite interested in his performance. I listened to Terry Ryan on his call in show on Sunday artfully dance around the issue of Ponson’s problems. Ryan indicated that the Twins scout players both on the field and off the field. They want good guys – yet they have Ponson. Well, says Ryan, the Twins will take a chance on a guy from time to time. Hopefully, the Twins can surround him with great human beings and he’ll find a home here. So goes the spin. A cynical person might say that the Twins have sacrificed their ideals because they are desperate for starting pitching. But, there aren’t any cynics in these parts, so that comment will be left unsaid. I actually hope that Ryan is telling the truth – that guys in the organization are actually helping Ponson get it together. Because, you know, that would be cool.
For Ponson’s sake, I hope that (a) he gets his life straightened out, although his comments about his drinking leave more than a few of us less than optimistic about that and (b) that he pitches well.

Hmmm.... I finally am able to make a live game thread and I'm the only one here?
brink replied on April 9, 2007 at 6:11:27 pm
Guess not, didn't see you here guys. Ponson with some tough luck so far.
twinsnation replied on April 9, 2007 at 6:12:49 pm
Well, that was a legit hit right there from Abreu
New Britain Bo replied on April 9, 2007 at 6:12:44 pm

brink replied on April 9, 2007 at 6:13:56 pm
Nice throw by Cuddyer there.
brianS replied on April 9, 2007 at 6:15:13 pm
A-Rod sucks.
brink replied on April 9, 2007 at 6:16:11 pm
The other day I posted that Ponson looks like that dude from the Capital One commercials... I take it back, I think he looks more like the older brother from The Wonder Years.
brink replied on April 9, 2007 at 6:16:38 pm
Good strategy by Ponson here to set up the force at any base.
brianS replied on April 9, 2007 at 6:16:40 pm
who's up in the bullpen???
Jeez, Cindy.
Kris replied on April 9, 2007 at 6:16:55 pm
Hoo boy. Wonderful start here.
brink replied on April 9, 2007 at 6:17:51 pm
Kubel with a big boo-boo there. Doesn't go down as an error but just more tough luck for Ponson. Sidney ain't looking good out there but he does NOT deserve 3 ER thus far.
New Britain Bo replied on April 9, 2007 at 6:17:58 pm
Fooled by our own stadium - Doh!
brianS replied on April 9, 2007 at 6:19:07 pm
Well, Dougy's up. Twins should get out of this.
brianS replied on April 9, 2007 at 6:19:58 pm
That's some hideous chin hairs on Dougy's Gameday pic.
twinsnation replied on April 9, 2007 at 6:20:43 pm
Now the bats should be able to get to Pavano
brink replied on April 9, 2007 at 6:21:37 pm
All things considered, the Twins were lucky to yield only 3 runs there. Four "hits," two for extra bases, a walk, no strikeouts... could have been a lot worse.
SBG replied on April 9, 2007 at 6:22:52 pm
Thank Jeebus for Dougy.

I liked the link to Yanquis Chick from Big Mak earlier which defined Pavano, a verb: To disappoint people; not live up to expectations. "I did not want to pavano, so I showed up to work early on my first day and worked late on a special assignment."

twinsnation replied on April 9, 2007 at 6:47:47 pm
I feel like we'll get to Pavano at some point soon. 5 runs might be too much to get back though.
brink replied on April 9, 2007 at 6:48:17 pm
So what's the over/under on starts Ponson makes in a Twins uni? You gotta think they're gonna have a guy on a short leash. Maybe not JD Durbin-Diamondbacks short, but given what we've seen I'd set it at 3.
frightwig replied on April 9, 2007 at 7:31:02 pm
I don't know if Ponson is going to work out or not, but it seems harsh to judge him on one start against the Yankees in which the defense behind him also let him down.
brink replied on April 9, 2007 at 7:37:22 pm
You just don't run on Cuddyer.
brianS replied on April 9, 2007 at 6:48:52 pm

brink replied on April 9, 2007 at 6:59:44 pm
What an amazing play by Jeter... even gave us the totally superfluous pirouette spin even though he could've walked the ball to first base with Redmond's wheels.

All the stations are back. I promise, I'm not touching that bottle of scotch.
Nick N. replied on April 9, 2007 at 7:06:13 pm
I had a test in my night class tonight, cruised through it and got back about 10 mins ago. Turned on the TV, looked at the score, and all I could do was laugh. Ponson has at least looked pretty good since I've been watching him, as he's gotten a couple grounders this inning. Reading the comments from earlier, I get the sense that his first-inning struggles were the result of some bad luck. That a fair assessment?
brink replied on April 9, 2007 at 7:09:33 pm
The first inning was one of those where he could've just as easily given up 0 runs -- or 5 runs. Tough luck on a bloop double, an infield single, and especially a Kubel misplay of a fly ball in LF.
He didn't look good in the 2nd inning as Abreu blasted off on him. But if things bounce his way a little better in the 1st, 2 or 3 runs in 4 innings ain't horrible.
brianS replied on April 9, 2007 at 7:08:25 pm
Ponson's been solid. Other than the first two innings.
brink replied on April 9, 2007 at 7:15:32 pm

Bartlett is really really struggling this season... not sharp in the field or at the plate. He just looks lost out there.

brianS replied on April 9, 2007 at 7:27:14 pm
Pavano not exactly dominating so far. Struggling to hit the strike zone, it seems. C'mon, Kubel.
ubelmann replied on April 9, 2007 at 7:28:26 pm
Busy day, so I'm just checking in on the comments and the box score. The one thing I haven't seen mentioned much here w/r/t Ponson is that this Yankees lineup is really, really good. This is basically the same lineup that scored 5.74 runs per game last year. If Ponson ends the day giving up 5 runs over 5 innings with some bad luck mixed in there, I'm not exactly going to worry about him keeping a 9.00 ERA in the long run.
I would like to see a few more ground balls, though...
brianS replied on April 9, 2007 at 7:31:48 pm
I'm not worried about Ponson sporting a 9.00 ERA for the long run either

He's gotten 11 in 5 IP againsta very powerful lineup. Not satisfying?
ubelmann replied on April 9, 2007 at 7:38:10 pm
I wasn't sure how many of the hits were ground balls and Yahoo is currently showing just 7 ground outs, so that's good. He's shown that he can be around 50% in the past but it's worth mentioning that the Yankees hit more ground balls than an average team last year, so it's not really a typical power-laden, fly-ball heavy lineup. Like I said, the Yankees lineup is tough, but I'd be happier with more ground balls. I'm not pushing the big red emergency button by any means, though.

Friggin' Bartlett still kicking that ball around out there. Not an error and not even a horrible play, but it would be nice to actually do a little over and above to pick up your team...

Plus even just looking at the comments here, it sounds like there was some pretty brutal defense out there. Sir Sid's not the only guy who's going to get victimized by Damon-Jeter-Abreu-Rodriguez.

The smell of shellac is starting to overcome the garlic I sauteed in the kitchen.
2 Italian Hot sausages
2 Italian Sweet sausages
olive oil, seasoned with slices of garlic (remove when golden)
Farfalle pasta
1/4 c. frozen green peas
1/2 doz. baby portabellas
Italian flat parsley
1/3 c. heavy cream
Parmiggiano-Reggiano cheese
Boil farfalle until done (6 min). Drain without rinsing.
Remove skins from sausages; brown in garlic-flavored olice oil until edges are crispy.
Drain remaining oil. Add pasta and peas to sausages. Cover with cream and heat until cream thickens. Serve with generous scrapings of cheese and fresh ground pepper.
