2007 Game 17: Minnesota Twins at Kansas City “1927 Yankees” Royals

April 21st, 2007 by ubelmann

Boof Bonser vs. Zack Greinke

Once upon a time, Zack Z. Greinke was overhyped, but despite the disappointment partially brought on by the hype, he's still a fairly solid pitcher. Even in his bad year, 2005, he had an FIP of 4.51 and an xFIP of 4.94, which pretty darned good for a 21-year old in major league baseball. When he's on, he's a "control-type" pitcher who allows a lot of fly balls, but makes up somewhat for that by getting a lot of pop-ups. With that in mind, KC isn't an ideal place for him to pitch, since the ball can really fly out of that park at times. For his sake, they've at least improved the defense some, which ought to help him out quite a bit.

For those of you on THE INSANITY watch, I saw this last night:

Twins OF Rondell White, on the DL with a strained right calf, did not fare well when he tried to run in the outfield.

Casilla and Punto, 1-2 in the lineup. Two out machines in front of Mauer.

New Britain Bo replied on April 21, 2007 at 1:17:53 pm

Religious folks buzzing at the front door -They: 'you are invited to a...,' NBB: 'no thx, games on' - missed Punto's hit.

SBG replied on April 21, 2007 at 1:34:17 pm

The popup was in centerfield.

the Dragon replied on April 21, 2007 at 1:35:50 pm

Makes a bit more sense. Doesn't sound like anything other than DeJesus hit hard.

SBG replied on April 21, 2007 at 1:36:51 pm

The Twins should be able to get to Greinke.

SBG replied on April 21, 2007 at 1:42:06 pm

Twins 3-15 with RISP last night. What a terrible game that was.

Redmond laughs at that stat. RBI single.

SBG replied on April 21, 2007 at 1:45:03 pm

With two strikes. I was about to write a comment about a wasted opportunity, but our big DH bat picks up the squad.

Punto walks. An on-base machine.
Mauer lines out to right. Punto Bertin' doubled off of first, Teahen to Gload.

Big Mak replied on April 21, 2007 at 2:01:10 pm

Twins lead the league in stolen bases and they haven't been caught. It's one thing to pick your spots, but to run that much and not get caught, that's pretty impressive.

New Britain Bo replied on April 21, 2007 at 2:12:02 pm

If you're not getting out then you're not on the edge. Conservative ball I say.

Big Mak replied on April 21, 2007 at 2:15:16 pm

Greinke is clearly worried about them running, he's payed alot of attention to Punto and Cuddyer(!?) on first.

Big Mak replied on April 21, 2007 at 2:18:55 pm

... and he just threw over to keep Redmond close.

the Dragon replied on April 21, 2007 at 2:03:31 pm

Big Mak replied on April 21, 2007 at 2:18:20 pm

Seriously, just play the right fielder there, that's a carbon copy of Redmonds first RBI single.

SBG replied on April 21, 2007 at 2:19:13 pm

He makes his living on that.

SBG replied on April 21, 2007 at 2:18:25 pm

Big Mak replied on April 21, 2007 at 2:27:37 pm

SBG replied on April 21, 2007 at 2:29:45 pm

SBG replied on April 21, 2007 at 3:07:11 pm

What I think is hilarious is that KSTP claims their signal gets to 12 states and four Canadian provinces. Well, it's not the only bs I've ever heard on that station.

twayn replied on April 21, 2007 at 3:06:02 pm

Like nobody saw that DP coming.

BillP replied on April 21, 2007 at 3:07:20 pm

The Royals' radio PBP guy is clearly very irritated with Redmond, calling all of his hits "half-swing, bloop singles to right." They haven't been half swings in any sense; they're just good swings, protecting the plate on a pitch on the outer half and serving the ball into the outfield the other way (softly, but on a line). You'd think after the third time it happened, he'd realize there's some skill involved. Redmond's going to have a claim for slander sometime soon here.

ubelmann replied on April 21, 2007 at 5:48:26 pm

I really don't understand why teams just don't pound Redmond inside. He has no power, and all he does is hit outside pitches into right field. I swear that's how he got every single one of his 61 hits last year.
