April 22nd, 2007 by frightwig
Herbie demonstrates the Fairlight synth for kids on Sesame Street. A young Tatyana Ali, later of The Fresh Prince of Bel Air, gets a lot of attention.

One of Grinnell College, IA's finest sons. I wonder if this was taped around the time of Rockit? Herbie was riding the wave then.
Those Fairlight synthesizers were the cat's ass in their time, but muy expensive. Not many keyboardists had the know-how to make the expenditure worthwhile.

It's probably about 1983-84. That was when "Rockit" came out, Tatyana began appearing on Sesame Street, and the Fairlight started to become popular with professional musicians. Herbie's glasses and the green computer screen also look of the time.

If I had to guess, Stevie Wonder used that contraption on 'Higher Ground' - forget the album tho - S. in the K. of L. maybe.

"Higher Ground" comes from Innervisions, released in 1973. According to the album liner notes, Stevie used a bank of Moog and ARP synths for that record.
The Wikipedia page on the Fairlight CMI says that the Fairlight was designed in 1978, and started to appear on pop music recordings in the early '80s, more frequently as its sampler technology improved with each new model released from 1982-85.

As usual, Engineering stands by mute and unintroduced, a little behind and off stage, clicking keys softly.
