Mugshot Purgatory: Detroit Tigers

Posted by AMR on Friday, May 11th, 2007 at 8:01 am

The Twins faced the AL Champion Detroit Tigers last week, but I was to busy to write them up. This week, the Twins will face Mike "20L" Maroth, former Royal Chad "The Real Deal" Durbin, and Jeremy "Jae" Bonderman.

Jeremy looked so young in 2003... younger than Zack Greinke when Zack actually was a high schooler.

Update! Bonderman has been scratched due to finger blisters. Virgil Vasquez has been called up from the AAA Toledo Mudhens to get Sunday's start.

The 2006 pic is with the Erie SeaWolves. End update.

The other former Royal on the team is utility infielder Neifi Perez.

Apparently, all photos of Neifi as a Royal have been destroyed.

The other two starters are Nate Robertson and Justin Verlander, while former Twin Kenny Rogers is on the 15-day DL.

The Robertson AA mugshot is from the Portland Salt Dawgs (then a Marlins affiliate, now a BoSox affilitate). Rogers may have been playing longer than mugshots have been taken, but I couldn't even find his 2003 Twins mug.

Another former Twin is the Tig's closer, Todd Jones, and another guy on the DL is Joel "guitar hero" Zumaya.

Re: Jones; I love the dedication to the Fu Manchu. Let him never join the Yankees (See: Fasano, Sal). The Zumaya A-ball pic is from the West Michigan Whitecaps (where the team wears black caps, obviously). One thing I find really interesting about the Zumayas is that the 2007 picture is the same photo as the 2006 picture (he must have missed photo day), but it has been color-tweaked to match the 2007 series for the rest of the team.

I really don't care that much about the whole PED thing, but Tiger fans might want to worry about guys on their team testing positive for MEDs... Mood Enhancing Drugs. I see these pics of Fernando Rodney and remember the dudes in college that were always high. They looked like this. And Magglio Ordonez looks like the guy that left high school straight-laced and came back from college via a two-week vacation in Amsterdam. Presented in chronological order to observe the moral decline...

That 2004 Ordonez is a photoshop from his ChiSox pic, after he signed with the Tigers.

I've got a lot more pictures, but I've run out of time. (Need to pay attention to the wife the week of Mother's day.) But these are definitely the best pictures from this team.

Isn't it Joel Zumaya?

Moss misses the subtle reference from the SBG Lexicon.

That wasn't intended as a joke, just I got confused. It'll be fixed in a minute.
Plus, I thought the joke was on "Jeremy"

Looks like the more money Maggs makes, the less he can afford a haircut.

He just got his hair cut last week, in the middle of a winning streak! The baseball gods are no doubt displeased.

So Mags cut his hair, huh? He probably realized he could never top Oscar Gamble.
(nice bit of airbrushing, no?)

Ordonez has been with the Tigers THAT LONG? Wow, seems like only a couple seasons ago when he was on the Sox...

This will be his third season with the Tigers. There are four Tigers pics beacuse the only version I could find of his 2004 was after the free-agent signing, once it got photoshopped to the new team. (Remove pinstripes, blue up cap and collar a bit and replace old English "Sox"es with old English "D"s.)

The Bonderman and Jones photoshop jobs are pretty bad. Are you keeping track of the bad photoshops so you can put together a Hall of Shame?

AMR replied on May 11th, 2007 at 12:04 pm

The Bonderman is a photoshop? He was traded from hi-A Modesto (Oakland) to Hi-A Lakeland (Detroit) in August 2002. (PTBNL in Jeff Weaver DET to NYY, Ted Lilly NYY to OAK, Carlos Pena OAK to DET, plus three others I've never heard of.) That does not sound like the type of player who would need a photoshopped picture. If it is photoshopped, it is the 2002.

At the same time: hi-A to starting 28 games in the majors. Wow. Even if with a 5.56 ERA.

Also, I hadn't realized that the Jones was a photoshop until just now. Should probably clean my monitor at home.

I guess the Bonderman might not be a photoshop job, but it kind of seems like it to me. The hat seems much too evenly colored, and at least on my monitor here, I can't see the line between the bill and the rest of the cap, which you can sometimes see. Maybe the colors are just really washed out, though.
