2007 Game 41: Minnesota Twins at Milwaukee Brewers

Posted by ubelmann on Friday, May 18th, 2007 at 6:05 pm

Boof Bonser vs. Chris Capuano

Chris Capuano is a very good left-handed pitcher. His xFIP of 3.88 would make him the second-best pitcher in the Twins' rotation, behind just Santana. At a 48% GB%, he's not an extreme groundballer, but he's above average in that area. Which of course means that the Twins will fail to hit the ball out of the infield against him.

No DH! I'm sure with all of the pitchers bunting, Dick Bremer will be pleased as Punch.

I'm sure that most of SBG Nation is aware of the dubious merits of RBI, but it is no fluke that Twins' DH's have only 16 RBI so far this season, given their measly .270/.350/.376 line so far. Personally, I'm hoping that Twins pitchers, as hitters, can challenge that number. (Of course, that would probably require the back of the order to actually get on base, which is also a challenge.)

I'll be at the opera, but hopefully the Twins can find a way to stick it to me and do that w-thingy. Wan? Wim? I forget what they are called, there haven't been too many of them lately.

Is 2nd best pitcher in the Twins rotation really that impressive?

Is second-best starter behind Santana ever a very informative statement???

Ok, are we annoyed that Punto is playing SS today (because Bart is sitting down) or pleased that Punto is being used as a proper Futility Infielder today?

blooper for Nicky.

Moss replied on May 18th, 2007 at 8:09 pm

Annoyed. Wouldn't it be better to use Punto for Bartlett against a RHP, if at all?

Great. Runner at second. Slappy at the plate, so we are a hit away from having a runner in scoring position.

Bart vs. RH: 265/343/337
Bart vs. LH: 290/333/390

I don't think it makes much difference, Moss.

Moss replied on May 18th, 2007 at 8:20 pm

ESPN has slightly different stats. It gives him +.053 in OBP versus right, and +.078 in SLP versus left. So not much different, but Moss might prefer to let him face a lefty.

I should modify that. The site is alive and well, thanks to AMR, Big Mak, Banjo, etc. and the occasional favor from The Godfather. It's the game threads that are withering on the vine here.

Some of us don't have families/children/etc just yet, which provides for some conflicts between baseball and social life, especially 1700 miles from the Metrodome.

Other than that, I know some of the other guys mentioned it being near finals time for some schools, so that's probably a factor, too. Plus the weather getting nice, etc., etc. Things'll probably pick up a little when The Chosen One comes off the DL, too.

brianS replied on May 19th, 2007 at 10:52 am

I should have included Herr Ubelmann on the front of that list above, btw. My apologies if any slight seemed implied.

I've said it before, but it bears repeating. I wanna be ubelmann when I grow up.

I'd love to participate more, but like ubelmensch, a social life (and in my case - several night shifts a week) preclude me from doing so. Still, reading the game log every night has become a pleasurable ritual that i really look forward to. Keep the faith, fellas. (Hey bS, maybe it's time to dust off that Carter speech again.)

brianS
brianS replied on May 19th, 2007 at 4:03 pm

This one?

as I was preparing to speak, I began to ask myself the same question that I now know has been troubling many of you. Why have we not been able to get together as a nation to resolve our serious assbat problem?

It's clear that the true problems of our Nation are much deeper -- deeper than baserunning errors or bunting with the leadoff hitter on second base and no outs, deeper even than vocal leadership or urgency. And I realize more than ever that as El Presidente I need your help. So I decided to reach out and listen to the voices of America.

I invited to Killebrew Drive people from almost every segment of our society -- business and labor, teachers and preachers, governors, mayors, and private citizens. And then I left Killebrew Drive to listen to other Americans, men and women like you.

It has been an extraordinary ten days, and I want to share with you what I've heard. First of all, I got a lot of personal advice. Let me quote a few of the typical comments that I wrote down.
...
"Don't talk to us about assbats or the mechanics of the circle change, but about an understanding of our common good."

"Mr. President, we're in trouble. Talk to us about blood and sweat and tears."

"If you lead, Mr. President, we will follow."
...
This kind of summarized a lot of other statements: "Mr. President, we are confronted with a moral and a spiritual crisis."
...
And the last that I'll read: "When we enter the moral equivalent of war, Mr. President, don't issue us BB guns."

Clearly, the President is crying out for a right-handed power hitter.

Lewwwww delivers with the ground-rule double. Boo birds out in Milwaukee. Dazz is hammering Gabe Gross for his Hunter-like route to the ball.

Cleveland closes out NJ at last. Could the Eastern Conference playoffs get any more boring?

Lebron with a solid, 23-8-8 performance, and a Donyell Marshall sighting!! (18 pts)

but the Nets stank. Time to dismantle/retool that roster. They don't have what it takes to contend for a title anymore. 37.7 pct from the floor, thanks to a 1-7 from 3pt range performance from Kidd. And only 11 FGA from Vince Carter in 41 minutes? WTF??

brianS
brianS replied on May 18th, 2007 at 8:51 pm

Bonser with another 1-2-3 inning. 80 pitches through 6. He has an outside shot at a complete game. But I'm guessing he goes 8 and Gardy brings on Nathan for a little work.
