From Worst to First!
The Improbable 1991 Seasons of the Atlanta Braves and the Minnesota Twins

by Bill Gutman, Dave Weiner, and Tony Seidl

Copyright © 1991 - T.D. Media, Inc.

paperback, 155 pages, several b/w photos and two "special team photos commemorative cards inserts"

"Here's the first inside story on how these two franchises did it.  How both came from the bottom of the standings to not only win their division but their respective pennants."

  • The history, the trades, the free agents and the rookies...
  • A complete recap of the entire season...
  • Amazing comparisoins of team statistics -- 1990 vs. 1991...
  • How they made it through the ranks into the lead championship series to their league pennant...
  • Play-by-play, game-by-game coverage of the World Series
  • Sixteen exciting photographs covering the entire season...

Personal notes:

  • Seemed appropriate to feature this book during the Braves/Twins series this week.

  • I think it's pretty obvious when the back cover says, "Here's the first inside story...", that it was rushed out to print right after the 1991 WS wrapped.  Still, it does a pretty good job of summarizing the great run these two teams had that year.

  • Does this quote (pg. 122) sound familiar?  "Everyone enjoys playing behind Jack," says Gladden.  "It seems like we give a bit extra for him because we know he's busting his butt, too."  Yeah, I also thought so.

Talk about rushed to print! What is a "lead championship series"?

Only kidding...

Yes, please.
Please tell me that Glavine, Maddox, and Smoltz are there.
(Maddox was on the team by that point, right?)

Nope, but even better: Steve Avery!

Dontrelle Willis has been on a kind of Steve Avery career path so far.

AMR, grab the mugs from here. They should be there for a while. Sorry, best I can do from such small photos.

Do the Twins win that Series if Maddux is with the Braves instead of Liebrandt (who started and lost Gm 1, and lost Gm 6 in relief)?

Sure! Maddux was a Cub then, which means he sucked. I kid, of course.

I remember talking my mom into buying this book for me when it was by the checkout at the Rainbow Foods. I devoured it in a day and went back and re-read it once again during high school.

Wow... amazing to think the Twins and Braves each made the WS that season with only 15 players.

Just for that, I'll be expecting an email from you to SBGlibrary with info for a future book post. We'll be needing one in about 3 weeks.
