Game 63: Atlanta at Minnesota

Chuck James looks like a pretty standard middle-of-the-rotation pitcher, with maybe a slight walk problem. He is left-handed, though, so he's packing kryptonite.
Carlos Silva just had a boy, MVP Justin Silva, so hopefully this will improve his pitching. My only real hope for Silva is in this chart, from fangraphs:
Silva's GB% has crept up to near where it was in '04 and '05. But this could just be a blip on the radar. Actually, it's most likely a blip on the radar, but since we're stuck with him anyway, I'd like to hope it's not.

I'm planning on being around for tonight's game. Let's get this game log going.
Nice throw by Joe there.
All right. Dinner is over, plates are carried away, wife is relaxing on the deck. I'm ready to run this thing.
Mauer with a base hit. Ubelmann, are we watching your list?
Bunterific!
Ex-sweeze me?
A clean field of that bunt by the pitcher and Hunter is out, I think.
Holy crap! Brilliant bunt by Torii... an utter surprise combined with perfect execution. Wow, had to show up here to comment on that...
It was a good surprise and effective.
almost as surprising as a brink sighting! welcome back/by, brink!
Back atcha, Brian!
make good things happen. I'm out, probably for the duration. That's what I get for parenting children.
Well, Silva gave up a couple ground ball hits, but then three fly outs (one on the infield).
Ube's charts at the top of the page look a little like Brice Marden's work.
gritty!
Loo goes deep! The end is near!
Homer!
Lew with the power, Torii with the small ball... up is down, black is white, Joe Morgan is a brilliant analyst...
Let's not get carried away, brink.
Bartlett with a hustle double and then steals third. Boy he looked like he was going to be out at full speed. The Twins look sharp again tonight.
McCann's not enjoying his evening so far... robbed of a hit, Castillo sets the screen on the 3rd base steal, takes a foul ball to the chest...
The Hunter bunt was a nice play, but man he just set Dick off.
What the hell was McCann complaining about there?
I don't know but it didn't appear that he had a valid beef.
Castillo backed into him a little bit but the ump appeared to be signalling that Luis crouched down enough to give McCann a clear shot. And that's the way I saw the play... I thought it was the correct call.
What was in those cigars that Carlos handed out? I say, go ahead and order a couple more boxes of 'em.
E-Slappy
You are berting kidding me! That is a hit???
The new Twins official scorer learned from his mentor well... "There is no 'E' is 'Luis Castillo'"...
The ghost of Tom Mee says hit.
I wonder if Howard Sinker is scoring this game. He indicated that he wouldn't be scoring every game.
Castillo is not doing Silva too many favors tonight.
There we go. Ground balls right at guys.
Silva doing a great job of combating some bad luck with some good pitching... and good luck.
Double!
Homer!
Ubes crosses off two on his wish-list.
Safe to say Chuck James ain't fooling anyone tonight... let's hope Cox' hook is a longer tonight than it was yesterday. For some reason 5 runs doesn't seem impervious with Silva on the mound...
Homer!
Torii continues the onslaught.
Wow, this is a bloodbath. Quite a pleasant surprise to tune in to!
What's it like in Buenos Aires these days? Is it cool this time of year?
Yeah, it´s getting to be winter here. Obviously it´s nothing like a Minnesota winter, but it´s probably in the low 50´s now.
centigrade?
Nice looking double play there. Things are looking up tonight!
Indians three weeks ago: beat the Tigers 12-11. No leadoff hitters reached base in an inning.
Braves so far tonight: 0 runs, all four lead off hitters have reached base safely.
I was at that 11 hit shutout that Silva threw a couple years back. I think he got six double plays.
Yep... Silva vs. Anaheim at home... he threw the ball into the stands and Gardenhire chewed him out for it... might qualify for the "worst" shutout of all time...
From the Baseball Library:
Kevin Slowey is Matt Guerrier's long lost Twin. Pun intended.
Cuddy Boy is having a good night tonight.
So I´m looking over the gameday to see what I missed... Torii pulled a squeeze bunt? Did Dick and Bert have to stop the broadcast to take cold showers?
Just about.
The screen went blank.
+10
Don't Stop Beleeeeeeeeeeeeevin'
Nice barehanded pickup by JB.
Did I hear Dazzle correctly in that he underhanded it to first? Where did he field it?
Charged in and grabbed it and flipped it sidearm to first.
Showed Neshak how it's done, eh?
(I'm stuck with Diz and Gourd, too)
What kind of studio do you have E-6?
Kinda messy.
I'm a painter.
As in Matisse or Dutch-Boy?
By Dutch-Boy, you mean deKooning, right?
Mebbe. Or him.
Ah, I see. In my mind, sidearm =/= underhand.
No, Max. You were right. Gladden said "underhanded." Play by play is not his forte.
I was kinda hoping that he called it right, and that Bartlett tossed it granny-style across the diamond.
maybe by "underhanded" he meant "nefarious"???
ala Simon Bar Sinister?
Time for Luis to be Luis.
Hey, I got my will to live again. It had run off with the Twins offense, but it's back now. Hope it sticks around awhile.
Quite the echo in here tonight.
I've been around, but I think it's too hot for the Nation to be sitting at the 'puter.
Silva working on a shutout, 3 homers (including Edsel), Torii executing a successful squeeze. Perhaps it's all too much for the citizenry.
Poor Mauer. It bears repeating: to want to play behind the plate is to be a little soft in the head.
C'mon, GiDdy-uP.
Voila, ici 'est.
Look at that... the Cardinals are 7 games under .500 and yet only 4 losses off the NL Central-leading Brewers.
You just know St. Louis is going to repeat as WS champions... this time they'll beat the 105-win Red Sox in five games...
I'd be OK with that.
I'm enjoying all the belly-achin' here in StL after everyone was so spoiled last year. But no one was fooled going into the season.
Carl Pohlad bought B-96? Please please tell me there will be a press conference with Carl in a du-rag...
Classy - dial-tone on MLB audio broadcast. Good job by the ex-CCO'ers.
At least th' Atlanter croakers have a working tty.
(in best Bob Casey voice: )
Please please please Ron let Silva go for the CG... nobody and I mean nobody puts up more freakish CG numbers than Carlos Silva...
I second that. Another 11 hit shutout?
Only 81 pitches through 7 IP. It seems like it's more up to Carlos than it's up to Ron-Ron.
This game isn't really very exciting. Big lead, no suspense, a shutout, but not that well pitched
Still, I like it.
Yeah, it's not like I hate it, but all of the excitement was an hour plus ago.
This looks a lot like an old-school Silva box score. 0 XBH allowed, 0 BB allowed, 3 DP. I'm almost enthused about the big fella again.
All right. How about a roll call? Who's out there right now? Respond to this entry.
I'm here, boss. I have to take off soon to get home, though.
Just got back from softball and a shower. You guys have been calling a good game here, I must say.
