Game 63: Atlanta at Minnesota

Posted by ubelmann on Wednesday, June 13th, 2007 at 6:10 pm

Chuck James vs. Carlos Silva

Chuck James looks like a pretty standard middle-of-the-rotation pitcher, with maybe a slight walk problem. He is left-handed, though, so he's packing kryptonite.

Carlos Silva just had a boy, MVP Justin Silva, so hopefully this will improve his pitching. My only real hope for Silva is in this chart, from fangraphs:

Carlos Silva GB/FB/LD chart, from fangraphs, 6/13/07

Silva's GB% has crept up to near where it was in '04 and '05. But this could just be a blip on the radar. Actually, it's most likely a blip on the radar, but since we're stuck with him anyway, I'd like to hope it's not.

Bartlett with a hustle double and then steals third. Boy he looked like he was going to be out at full speed. The Twins look sharp again tonight.

brink
brink replied on June 13th, 2007 at 7:38 pm

McCann's not enjoying his evening so far... robbed of a hit, Castillo sets the screen on the 3rd base steal, takes a foul ball to the chest...

SBG
SBG replied on June 13th, 2007 at 7:39 pm

The Hunter bunt was a nice play, but man he just set Dick off.

What the hell was McCann complaining about there?

SBG
SBG replied on June 13th, 2007 at 7:40 pm

I don't know but it didn't appear that he had a valid beef.

brink
brink replied on June 13th, 2007 at 7:42 pm

Castillo backed into him a little bit but the ump appeared to be signalling that Luis crouched down enough to give McCann a clear shot. And that's the way I saw the play... I thought it was the correct call.

Indians three weeks ago: beat the Tigers 12-11. No leadoff hitters reached base in an inning.

Braves so far tonight: 0 runs, all four lead off hitters have reached base safely.

SBG
SBG replied on June 13th, 2007 at 8:11 pm

I was at that 11 hit shutout that Silva threw a couple years back. I think he got six double plays.

brink
brink replied on June 13th, 2007 at 8:13 pm

Yep... Silva vs. Anaheim at home... he threw the ball into the stands and Gardenhire chewed him out for it... might qualify for the "worst" shutout of all time...

E-6
E-6 replied on June 13th, 2007 at 8:18 pm

From the Baseball Library:

The record for most hits by one team while being shut out is 14, set once in the NL and once in the AL. On September 14, 1913, Chicago Cubs ace Larry Cheney threw a complete-game shutout against New York, despite being beaten up by the Giant hitters. The Giants had a hit in every inning, but had only one runner reach third base. Cheney was helped by three New Yorkers getting caught stealing and one being thrown out trying to stretch a single into a double.

The Giants’ dubious record was matched on July 10, 1928 by the Cleveland Indians, who somehow could not score against journeyman Washington pitcher Milt Gaston. Gaston, who two years earlier had allowed 12 hits while shutting out the Red Sox, survived six leadoff hits and five Indians reaching third base.
