  • Unfortunately, you can't make the kind of valid point Deion is making without looking like a fan and defender of dogfighting. I too am more concerned with the loss of a person's life than a dog's life. That doesn't mean I condone cruelty to animals; it simply means I don't place equivalent value on the life of a human and the life of a dog or any other animal. If, based on that opinion, you want to label me an animal-hater, I guess there's nothing I can do about that.

    • I should clarify - Deion's point, which I believe is valid, is that there seems to be very little interest in finding the murderer of Darrent Williams, the Denver cornerback. There is virtually no news regarding that investigation. But there is wall-to-wall coverage of the Vick indictment, and seemingly no expense is being spared in the investigation and prosecution of this case. If you were the parent of a murdered child, wouldn't you find this a bit outrageous?

This is no doubt in part due to the celebrity of the accused. But I also think there is an element of outrage regarding cruelty to animals that is not also reflected in similar cruelty to humans. To many, the crime of killing a dog is worse than that of killing a human. I simply don't agree. I condone neither; but I reserve my greatest outrage for those crimes which to me are the most outrageous.

Does this in any way mitigate what Vick has allegedly done? No.

If Vick was up for murder, though, there'd be a helluva lot more outrage, I can guarantee you that.

No one is saying that dogfighting is worse than murder. How is the lack of a suspect apprehension in the Denver player murder case even related to this? It isn't. If the killer is found and enough evidence is gathered, that scumbag will go to prison for life. Rae Carruth was convicted of murder and sentenced to life in prison.

No way does Vick get life in prison for this -- it is not going to happen. What has happened, though, is that a guy with a $130 million contract, who's supposed to be the dreaded "face of the franchise" of the Falcons has allegedly been involved in, and indeed appears to be the ringleader of, a high stakes illegal operation that practices sadistic and inhumane treatment of animals. Saying that it isn't as bad as murder is setting a very low bar indeed.

  • I'm not sure that it's true that there is very little interest in finding the murderer of Darrent Williams. I assume the investigation is ongoing, and whatever leads exist are being followed. The fact that there is no news about it may simply reflect that there is currently nothing to report. There was only sporadic news about Michael Vick until he was indicted, at which time things exploded. In fact, a couple of weeks ago, the news was that he would probably not be indicted.

I agree that a human life is greater than a dog's life, but I'm not sure how that applies here. The fact that Vick has been indicted does not in any way hamper the Darrent Williams investigation. Nor does the fact that there are people who commit worse crimes provide some kind of excuse for Vick. Similarly, if it turns out that he wasn't the ringleader, that also doesn't excuse him. While the people who are most involved should receive the most severe punishment, the people who are involved to a lesser degree should still be punished appropriately.

In saying this, I do not mean to sound as if I have already decided Vick is guilty. I recognize that all we have so far is an indictment, and that we have not yet heard Vick's defense, whatever it is. But Sanders seems to be saying that even if Vick is guilty, is isn't a big deal because others have done worse. I can't agree.

Let's also look at what Deion said about dogfighting:

I believe Vick had a passion for dogfighting. I know many athletes who share his passion. The allure is the intensity and the challenge of a dog fighting to the death. It’s like ultimate fighting, but the dog doesn’t tap out when he knows he can’t win.

It reminds me of when I wore a lot of jewelry back in the day because I always wanted to have the biggest chain or the biggest, baddest car. It gives you status.

He compares dogfighting to having a big diamond or driving a fancy car. That's ridiculous on its face. Any point he was trying to make about the Denver case is undermined by his implicit condoning of this sadistic crap.

  • SBG, I note your headline for this story. Do you really think Deion Sanders could get fired for this?

  • That article is as good an argument as I've seen lately for schools bringing back at least portions of a classical curriculum that includes logic and rhetoric. I hope Vick's lawyers are able to present a better defense for the price they'll be charging.
