Johan Santana vs. Jake Westbrook
Westbrook ==> Ground balls
Ground balls ==> Death to Twins offense
Westbrook's not been as good as in previous years, but don't let the 6.20 ERA fool you--he hasn't pitched that badly.
UPDATE: Punto-free lineup, featuring Bartlett at SS, Buscher at 3B, White at DH, and Tyner (the least bad of all the options) in RF.
UPDATE: Stock up on supplies and get ready for locusts, etc.--Jason Tyner has hit a home run.

You disappoint me, ubes.
4.94 FIP, 4.72 xFIP is ubelmann's evidence for not "that badly".
his GB pct is waaay down (51.9 pct compared to over 60 pct in each of the last three seasons), which probably explains a lot.
Yeah, that's more than a run lower than his ERA. That makes a difference. His GB% is definitely way lower than the last three years, but Carlos Silva wishes he could get back to 51.9% GB%.
That was a pretty nice play by Buscher to start that DP. Nothing spectacular, but solid.
Westbrook got a break on the strike 3 call to the MVP.
Santana has not been getting that break.
Is Westbrook really hitting 94 with his fastball, or is the gun juiced?
The gun is waaay juiced according to enhanced gameday, which has the ball leaving his hand at less than 90 mph.
FSN's gun nearly always reads at least a couple mph fast, I think.
Crowded around here this evening.
Looks like Wigginton just got dealt to the Astros for reliever Dan Wheeler.
Wheeler's definitely better than Rincon. He's been homer prone this year, but everything else looks fine. Tampa has had trouble finding good relievers, but have pretty good positional prospect depth. Seems like a decent deal for Tampa.
Twins couldn't have come up with a better offer than that?
I'm not convinced the Twins really want Wigginton much at all.
You're probably right, but it's stupid. Wigginton would be a nice fit on this team.
I would've been more in favor of acquiring Wigginton about a month ago, so he could've been around to help prevent that three-game three-run sweep the Tigers laid on us.
I don't believe they were ever really pursuing him, despite the media reports.
Astros now have a surplus of 3B. Even Ensberg would be an upgrade, if the 'stros would pick up some salary.
Also, apropos of Jeff A's Balfour watch in CoC today, it sounds like Balfour has been sent to the Devil Rays in some sort of a trade with the Brewers.
Brewers got Seth McClung for him. Decent deal for both teams.
I was sort of hoping we'd make some kind of deal with Houston for Mike Lamb. That would solve our 3B issue for awhile.
We've just witnessed history.
TYNER Haha
Time to prepare for the Apocalypse.
HELL FROZE OVER!!!!
I cannot believe my eyes.
the blind poet. Seems appropriate for such an historic event. In both respects.
I think I read about this in some ancient text one time. There were pictures of livestock on fire and big cracks in the Earth. I think we're in trouble.
Where's the Hell freezes over graphic?
I forgot we had that one on hand. I am clearly not the best man to be in charge of The Vault.
I always thought that Santana would go deep before Tyner. Go figure.
If the Twins rattle off a big winning streak now, I'm crediting Tyner's homer as the igniter.
One thing is that the Twins have to be feeling pretty sh!tty going into today's game. With the TynyHR, everybody gets a chance to laugh a little bit. It won't help as much as, say, acquiring a real 3B, but it could help.
For posterity. I wonder if Westbrook will offer to buy that ball and burn it.
Thanks, Ubes. I guess a moment like this deserves repeating.
*grabs Bible and starts reading Revelations*
Yeah, this might be the only time Tyner ever goes deep in his entire career, so we might as well make the most of it.
Martinez really got knocked pretty hard with that sawed off bat.
Yeah, that looked painful.
Wow, I got so excited about the Tyner homerun that I didn't notice I was posting about it in the Russel Branyan thread. Seriously though, wtf got into Renyt?
OMG!! Is it April Fools' Day in MLB? I tuned in too late!!
"91 years old young."
Nice execution, Bert.
Nice RBI for the MVP.
Runs! Beautiful runs!
More, please.
The planets must be aligned tonight or something. Punto's out of the lineup, Tyner hits a HR, and the Twins score some early runs.
It's too bad Tyner's HR was on the road, but really, he has no chance of hitting a HR in the Dome as long as the baggie is in RF.
I dunno. He hit one off the VERY top of that thing earlier this season...
If he hits one in the Dome, I predict it will be of the "Prince Fielder inside-the-park" variety.
By the way, great update on the log, Ublemann.
Locusts can be such a pest.
I prefer to think that having Punto out of the lineup is the cause of all things good in this world, including Tyny Homyrs.
Santana is quietly looking very good tonight.
Yup. It's ridiculous what Santana has to do to impress me. He's been good so far, but he's been so outrageously good in the past that it's difficult to match that.
Those numbers in 2004 were just nuts, especially when you consider that he wasn't particularly good over the first couple months of the season. I'm still blown away when I go back and look at his stats from that season.
Red-hot Morneau up with the bases loaded. I like.
The Indians have a prospect named Cirilo Cumberbatch.
Does he have any sisters?
*rim shot*
That's even better than Coco Crisp.
Shoot. I have to run movies back to the video store and pick up some things. Catch you all in a few innings.
After Tyny's round-tripper, you might as well pick up Magnolia while you're at it. Locusts. Frogs. Same difference.
4-3, 4-3, 4-3.
Anyone else notice that Morneau is having an absolutely monstrous month of July? Entered tonight's game hitting .349/.394/.686 with 8 HR and 26 RBI in 23 G, and now of course he's 1-2 with the RBI single tonight. The guy is just a beast.
Dazzle, "Tyner has an opportunity for his first two-homer game."
Gordo *snort*
Watch Tyner suffer from Punto's Disease (AKA Warning Track Power Syndrome)...
Victor Martinez, All-Star. Pshh.
Really Bartlett, how difficult is it to lay down a sacrifice bunt? Good hustle to beat out the tailor-made DP there.
Cleveland crew saying it's tough to bunt the sinker, but I'm not necessarily buying that. He seemed like he was trying too hard to bunt for a hit.
See, now that's a speedy player. I don't think any of the other Twins could beat that out from the right-handed batters' box.
Man, this team can't catch a break right now.
Nothin' you can do about that. Bad luck there.
Merde!
The failure to get down the bunt there is definitely irritating, but that's another example of a situation where the failed bunt just didn't matter. Even if Bartlett gets the bunt down, if anything, Mauer probably stands an even greater chance at walking, and Castillo winds up getting caught off 2nd base instead of Bartlett.
I cannot believe that these Cleveland announcers keep talking about Santana's losses this season and still haven't said anything about how the Twins have had trouble scoring runs for him. Well, I guess I can believe it, but it is irritating nonetheless.
That Garko strikeout was absolutely dominating.
Santana painting another masterpiece. 10 K's through 5.
As Batgirl used to say...Sit down bitch!
I miss her.
*ducks*
So do I. She had a unique voice amongst Twins bloggers.
no ducking necessary.
Wow. Santana is just absolutely baffling this lineup. This is the best I've seen him all year. I had a feeling he was going to come out with some fire in his belly after that last start.
Santana making sure absolutely no one can take away this game from him.
Just dominating performance thus far.
Wow. Wow. Wow.

Brilliant inning.
78 pitches for Santana through 5 innings. Even when they can't muster anything on offense, the Indians have been able to foul off pitches and run up Santana's pitch count.
Two runs on four hits over six innings for the Twins so far against a starting pitcher who's been downright awful. As much fun as I'm having watching Santana right now, it's tough to watch the Twins at the plate.
Dammit Morneau!
Cleveland Indians going with the "Bunt to avoid the no-hitter" aka douchebag route.
I thought I would only see that in the Little League World Series.
It's a reasonable thing to do. It's not like it's the ninth inning and they're down by 6... you've gotta do what you've gotta do to score runs -- they're trying to win a ballgame here.
I am going to stick with irrationality for right now. . . even though I agree with you rationally.
I don't buy that. It's a close game, and you have to do what you have to do to score runs. Fielding bunts is part of the game.
Get out of my head Ubes.
I'll try to back off.
I've felt that way about bunting in close games forever, though.. For that matter, I've felt that way about bunting in any situation. This isn't slow pitch softball. Bunting is allowed.
In retrospect I should have just said Santana is getting the Danny Almonte treatment and left it at that.
Bunting is definitely part of the game. Poorly worded and expressed.
Somebody better get drilled in the back tomorrow. F-heads.
Dazzle: "No sure what Tampa Bay is going to do with Dan Wheeler."
uh, how about "have him pitch"?
WTH does he think they were going to do with Ty Wigginton? Their bullpen is pitching like a bunch of groundskeepers.
You're Jason Michaels. Sit down already.
I think Santana is a good pitcher.
That's not good.
Sizemore=Fast
No kidding, I thought that was first and third for sure when the throw was coming into second.
Gardenhire would've been in a tough spot if Santana had gotten through seven no-hit innings with 110 pitches.
Yeah, Sizemore's hit helps Gardy out fo' shizzle.
Gardenhire is in a tough spot, period.
Thanks, TR.
I like Buscher. He makes good solid contact.
Jason obviously not thinking cycle.
wth is a power hitter like Tyner trying to bunt for a hit?!
I'm getting a little uncomfortable here.
It's like that a lot when your offense is a giant black hole.
Cleveland people saying the Gutierrez ROE should be a hit. In my book, that was definitely an error on Morneau. The ball hit him in the glove!
No question that that was an error. I don't see how there's even an argument to the contrary.
Well that's just fabulous.
I hate the offense. I hate the offense so goddamned much. This just sucks.
c-rap
Hafner is really, really good
Dazzle and Gordo just finished saying how one-dimensional Hafner is. Pfft.
You only need one dimension when you are a DH--just effing hit. Do we have to wait for another generation before people in the broadcast booth understand the DH role?
It's a pretty damn large dimension.
I guess he's one-dimensional, if the dimensions are offense and defense.
Ugh, why leave Santana in again for 110+ pitches?
Santana sucked his last outing and it isn't as if the Twins are playing for anything other than 2008 at this point.
Dumb decision to leave him in when there were many justifiable reasons to pull him.
Gardy wants him to finish the inning so that he might be in line for the win.
I know but this is now 2 out of 3 games where Santana is going over 110 pitches. Maybe the 4 HRs he gave up after the last start with 118 pitches were just anomalies but I can't imagine it is good for his arm to be out for that many pitches.
I trust a fresh Neshek as much as I do a 110+ pitch Santana to get those two outs.
The potential bad of keeping him out there outweighed the potential good for me.
It's a tough spot for Gardy. Johan is a very, very competitive man, and he has to try to keep him happy. This is a tough ND as it is, and it would've probably been even harder for him to stomach if someone came in and gave up an inherited run.
As long as this doesn't keep happening every other game, it's probably fine. Gardy's got a pretty good track record as far as not abusing his pitchers.
the problem is that he is trying too hard to catch Bedard for the strikeout crown
Now there is some delicious snark.
Pull him, Gardy. You need to save his arm for the post season. /snark
Score runs!
7 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, 1 BB, 12 K... and, I'd be willing to bet, no W.
A helluva ballgame against an Indians lineup that's been hitting .271/.355/.448 against LHP.
This Perez kid is pretty damn good.
Yeah, he's like Rincon used to be. If we could only score two runs off of Westbrook, we'll probably find a way to score negative runs against Perez.
Making a call, CC goes yard. A plea, really.
wrong number
It's just about the only way we can score runs anymore.
Damn. Sorry Johan. Screwed again.
Well, I'm going to catch the end of this game over a few beers at Majors with the g/f. Enjoy the rest of the game folks. Let's get some f%$@ runs!
Maybe my memory is faulty, but this has to be the toughest ND of the year for Santana.
This will end in tears.
Open up a can
Open up a can o’ Neshek on those boys
Oh lord. I hope Ullger is okay.
That ball got over there in a hurry.
Who got hit in the dugout?
oh, that's what happened? I just tuned in as Blake went back in the batter's box.
WTF is the deal with Gameday? I'm getting BIG delays (trying to log in; trying to switch to the TRN feed).
any word on whoever got hit?
STO confirming themoff's Ullger report, and saying he's been taken to the clubhouse. No further word from them. Liddle at 3B coach.
Leadoff Double is a good way to start the inning.
Torii Torii Hunter Hunter.
Hunter is about to do something stupid.
mmm. Joe Borowski. Very gettable.
Nice to have a real DH.
Lone Ranger sighting. Carrying a banjo.
The Dude does not abide.
Sorry -- The Dude DOES abide, he just doesn't get a SAC, and therefore is a nobody in DicknBert's minds.
We're all excited that Kubel advanced the runner.
but then, I guess this is the one situation where it is worth it, in expectation.
Kubel "gets the job done," unless, of course, you think the job is to drive in the runner for second.
It is a little strange that Kubel gets more praise for a productive out than he normally gets for doubles from Bert.
As a former pitcher, Bert naturally prefers outs to doubles.
So, if it comes down to the Busch-whacker, do you let him hit, or bring in a pinch-hitter? Who's available?
wow - that 5th pitch foul according to Gameday would have required RonDL to throw his bat at it to get it, it was so outside.
Affirmative. (Well, except he didn't throw the bat, but he reached an awfully long way out there. He couldn't figure out a way to foul off the ball in his chest.)
He swung at two, maybe three balls that AB.
off the six pack abs.
That 3-1 swing from Rondell was almost a slowpitch softball "you're not walking me to get to the girl behind me" swing.
on the bright side, Ford can't pinch hit.
W00T! Bushwacked!
Nice slow motion footage.
Hurrah for poor throws!
w00t!
veteran leadership leads to too much pressure on the 2bman. That's what you get from a Face.
The Twins get so few runners these days, Gardy will do anything--hit and run, steal, bunt, whatever--just to do something with runners on base.
Ullger with ice-pack on the left side of his face. Given the recent experience with batted balls hitting base coaches, this is a good thing.
Yeah, good to see that Ullger has his wits about him and everything.
as much as usual, anyway.
sheesh. 2 K's looking. Pathetic. What the hell were they waiting for?
I think they were waiting for strikes. Tyner's pitch wasn't especially close. Castillo's was close, but still not a strike.
Jason
KubelTyner at the plate.swing the berting bat, Tyny!
add Castillo to that sentiment.
To be fair, enhanced gameday has that waaaay out of the strike zone and he'd already fouled off three two-strike pitches. He got jobbed.
I agree it was out but from the TV it seemed like the pitches were in the exact same location as his strike one and Tyner's strike three. That wasn't a situation for a philosophical stand.
? Enhanced gameday has the first and third strikes nowhere near one another. The first strike was near the top of the zone, but over the middle of the plate--you could've almost fit a baseball between the plate and where the third strike was.
Disregard my comment Ubelmann. I thought you were referring to the Castillo strikeout.
You're right about Castillo. He had been getting that low and away pitch called a strike on him all day. It wasn't a strike, but yeah, a poor spot for a philosophical stand, especially for a slap hitter.
Some days, I would swear that the Twins lead the league in looking at (as opposed to throwing) called third strikes.
Also, in looking at hittable pitches.
I sure would like to know what Santana's outing would've been like if he was getting that strike zone. Jeebus.
Nathan with a fantastic fielding play there.
Yup, gotta love the spinnaroo.
Punto with the defensive play. He does make a nice defensive replacement.
I think I just solved Punto's problem.
My theory - if Punto started wearing a mustache it would solve everything. He'd hit better. He'd get down bunts. He'd stop getting picked off. It would all just come together.
Nah. It would be a porn 'stache and solve nothing.
At least if he had a porn 'stache he would be entertaining. That would solve one problem.
A Porn stache solves everything
Twins Win!
Teeny Tyny Tyner FSN Player of the game!!
What KIND of HR did Tyny hit?
Did he have to stop at first base to pee in a test tube?
What KIND of HR did Tyny hit?
He took the biggest hack he could possibly muster, hit the ball right on the screws, and baaarely lined it over the fence in RF. It was maybe 10 feet off the line? If he'd pulled it just a little more, he probably would've hit the wall, because the height of the fence is kind of screwy down there.
Did he have to stop at first base to pee in a test tube?
That's after the game.
Did he have to stop at first base to pee in a test tube?
Nope, but from my angle, it appeared that he peed his pants.
well, it worked for Duchamp.
What's sad is that BB will probably hit 755 tonight and take the spotlight away Tyner.
)
first home run at the Major League Level? News. Hitting your 755th? Borrrrrrring.
Only 800,000 more AB before Tyner threatens Bonds' number.
That's sweet.
I dunno. I'm just happy they got a win. Makes me optimistic...
