2007 Game 106: Some away team vs. the home team

Posted by ubelmann on Tuesday, July 31st, 2007 at 6:00 pm

Hey, look, Carlos Silva is pitching for the Twins today. Silva hasn't pitched for the last four days, so really, it's like the Twins just traded for a new pitcher. Wheeee!!

Speaking of trades, the Twins also recently "traded" Luis Castillo for Alexi Casilla. Boy, I can't wait for Casilla to make a couple of rookie mistakes so that Dick'n'bert can really lay into him and point out to us that he is unproven. That's the sort of thing that only expert commentators can effectively point out. Even better, I can't wait for all of the games that Casilla sits out and loses development time while Nick Punto continues to play fundamentally unsound baseball, but gets a free pass because, hell, he's not a rookie anymore so clearly he can't be making rookie mistakes.

I guess I'm just really happy that the Twins decided not to make any other moves today, because after the Silva and Casilla trades, this organization has been so perfectly constructed that there are no possible ways it could have been improved.

Interesting note in the Today in Baseball History

1989 - The Twins trade American League Cy Young Award winner Frank Viola to the Mets for five players, including pitchers Rick Aguilera, David West and minor leaguer Kevin Tapani. Viola is the first Cy Young Award winner to be traded during the following season. Tapani will blossom into a Cy Young Award contender in 1991.

That was a dark day, but it turned out to be a good trade for the Twins.

socaltwinsfan
socaltwinsfan replied on July 31st, 2007 at 7:09 pm

Cy Young contender seemed kind of generous for Tapani, but he did finish seventh that year and actually had a first-place vote. I'd be really interested to know who voted for him over Roger Clemens, who won more games, had a better ERA, pitched more innings and had a better WHIP. The Twins had three pitchers finish in the top seven in voting (Erickson and Morris) and they had the only three pitchers not named Clemens that garnered first-place votes. Erickson and Morris had three each.

Sure, but did Clemens lead his team to a division title? Didn't think so. Next, please.

maybe he was a conterder until late in the season and he had a meltdown

I dotn know, maybe some further study is involved. I do remember that Tapani had a fabulous season in 1991 (240+ IP good ERA)

.222/.300/.259 -- Jason Tyner vs. LHP, 2007
.257/.295/.266 -- Jason Tyner vs. LHP, career

If only we can find more ways to get Tyner at-bats against left-handed pitching, we could really be a contender...

I was thinking the same thing last night when Gardenhire left him in to face Gobble. In fact, I recall I was grumbling out loud right about the time Tyner dumped that ball into the outfield for a double and scored a very important insurance run.

I can't decide if the blessing of Tyner overperforming lately outweighs the curse of Gardenhire being rewarded for overplaying him... ;-)

I can't tell you how glad I am to see this... I was so worried that the Twins were going to make good on their threat to make Punto to full-time 2B and leave Casilla in the junk drawer.

Though I can't help but worry if this is some bizarre platoon thing and Punto will start against all righties or something...

All the official articles on mlb.com mentioned that Casilla was the "starting 2b" or something like that.
If it comes from Kelly Theiser, I assume it's been vetted.

ubelmann replied on July 31st, 2007 at 7:30 pm

Actually, the Twins might have a better chance scoring with the bottom half of their lineup. Mauer and Morneau are significantly diminished against LHP, Tyner has a long track record of suckage vs. LHP, and they're all bundled up in the top four spots of the order. It seems like our best chance of scoring is for Hunter to hit a double and then hope that Redmond or Cirillo can shoot a single to RF that scores him. Past that, maybe hope for a Lew Ford HR.

Someone should make a "highlight" film of Dick Bremer, 2006, proclaiming to everyone that Justin Morneau and Joe Mauer were just as good at hitting left-handed pitching as right-handed pitching. Then, Bremer should be forced to watch that film, looped over and over, until...well...I haven't figured out how long just yet, but a really long time. He at least has to say uncle or something...

SBG
SBG replied on July 31st, 2007 at 7:31 pm

Dick was going on about how the Twins have won three games in a row by low scores -- and how low scoring wins are the key to the Twins success. Yes, it's good to keep the opposing team from scoring runs, but there's nothing wrong with winning 6-2 and 5-1. Dick just cannot get his arms around that concept.

Only halfway. I love Redmond. He's actually been a huge key for the Twins this season, with Mauer's injury, his great hitting with Joe down, and more timely huge RBIs than I can count. And great defense.

Andrew
Andrew replied on July 31st, 2007 at 8:00 pm

OK, because I really like Redmond too. I think he fills the backup role quite well. He seems like the kinda guy that just comes to work and does what the ball club needs. Dollar for dollar, I think he's one of the best investments on the club. Plus, now with Castillo gone, he's got the only WS ring on the team.
