Game 136: KC vs. Minnesota
September 1st, 2007 by ubelmann
Brandon Duckworth vs. Carlos Silva
SBG Nation Convention Day!! (Edit: Baker got me so excited that I jumped the gun--sorry for any confusion.) It's only about five hours 'til game time as I write this, so I'm not really sure if I'll be awake for the game, and thanks to FOX's silly blackout rules, even though they aren't broadcasting the game at all, I will be unable to watch it. Still, I think I'll try to catch some of it on the radio and hold down the fort, representing for the out-of-towners.
I didn't catch any of the second game yesterday, but just looking at the box score makes me really happy. I believed that Baker could be a valuable pitcher, despite the iffy results on ERA, and he really seems to be putting it together. I'd like to think that this whole Baker episode will encourage analysts of all feathers not to be so pessimistic about quality prospects with good peripheral statistics and a so-so ERA, but I think that'll take a long time. For now, I'm simply happy that Scott Baker's pitching well.

So, odds on Silva throwing a one-hitter?
Banjo replied on September 1, 2007 at 10:44:30 am
Silva's gonna get shelled.
Rhubarb_Runner replied on September 1, 2007 at 10:44:46 am
Yeah, I really missed out when I had to work a fundraiser last night; I would gladly have caught the second game instead of the first one!
Inquiry: Hasn't Sweeney broken up no-hitter(s) late in the game before? More than once? I think so.
Big Mak replied on September 1, 2007 at 11:37:19 am
who else on KC would do that?
Banjo replied on September 1, 2007 at 10:55:08 am
Of all the games I did not watch -considering how much I goofed off during business hours on game one, that was a bad one to miss. I wish I would had been listening at least.
Rhubarb_Runner replied on September 1, 2007 at 11:12:43 am
...and there goes the perfect game.
Rhubarb_Runner replied on September 1, 2007 at 11:22:09 am
Long first ½ inning, but no damage done (except to Bart's fielding percentage)
Rhubarb_Runner replied on September 1, 2007 at 11:32:41 am
RedDawg with the big gun, and "Email" Brown is dead at 2nd.
Rhubarb_Runner replied on September 1, 2007 at 11:38:45 am
So, RR, do you have a life?
Rhubarb_Runner replied on September 1, 2007 at 11:40:13 am
As a matter of fact, no. Putting in some OT doing some end-of-the-month cleanup. It is nice having a ballgame to listen to while working. Also nice being able to work from home.
What about you, RR?
brianS replied on September 1, 2007 at 11:41:32 am
Love the inner monologue. Or is a dialogue, Rhu_Ru??
Rhubarb_Runner replied on September 1, 2007 at 11:42:33 am
Oh, sorry. Didn't notice I had company.
Rhubarb_Runner replied on September 1, 2007 at 11:41:59 am
Nah, 'bout the same. Guess we're a couple boring dudes.
Did you notice I finally got yesterday's Greatest Moments walk to White finally posted?
ubelmann replied on September 1, 2007 at 11:40:11 am
Our first five hitters were out on 13 total pitches? Yikes.
brianS replied on September 1, 2007 at 11:40:22 am
Where the hell did Li'l L-Rod come from?? I thought he got sent down to Rochester?
brianS replied on September 1, 2007 at 11:40:45 am
and, more importantly, why the hell is he playing?
Rhubarb_Runner replied on September 1, 2007 at 11:43:53 am
He shops at Doubles-R-Us
Banjo replied on September 1, 2007 at 11:44:04 am
I thought that's what the masses wanted?
ubelmann replied on September 1, 2007 at 11:46:09 am
A chicken in every pot and Luis Rodriguez starting at 3B? I hadn't really heard that rallying cry, but I guess it's possible...
Rhubarb_Runner replied on September 1, 2007 at 11:46:57 am
No, the masses want Punto out of the lineup. L-Rod didn't accomplish that.
brianS replied on September 1, 2007 at 11:50:05 am
then he has no purpose on the roster.
ubelmann replied on September 1, 2007 at 11:43:36 am
September call-ups, baby.
ubelmann replied on September 1, 2007 at 11:43:14 am
Hmmm...Luis "Not Nick Punto" starting at 3B today, eh?
ubelmann replied on September 1, 2007 at 11:45:08 am
But Punto's still starting at 3B anyway? Okay, I'm going to try to avoid talking about Punto today. The Twins just don't have a second baseman today, that's all.
Banjo replied on September 1, 2007 at 11:43:31 am
Runs!
ubelmann replied on September 1, 2007 at 11:44:00 am
Huzzah!
ubelmann replied on September 1, 2007 at 11:51:18 am
Actually, "run!" would have been more appropriate. I guess we can't go getting ahead of ourselves like that.
Rhubarb_Runner replied on September 1, 2007 at 11:45:15 am
Punto doin' what he does best, killing the rally, stranding the RISPs
Banjo replied on September 1, 2007 at 11:48:37 am
Do you remember the scene in "Full Metal Jacket" when they pummel the soldier with the bars of soap wrapped in towels. I wonder if his teammates have tried that?
brianS replied on September 1, 2007 at 11:51:59 am
or how about the scene in The Untouchables with the baseball bat at dinner? That might work.
Rhubarb_Runner replied on September 1, 2007 at 11:53:45 am
Or the rape in A Clockwork Orange. Oh, sorry, scratch that.
brianS replied on September 1, 2007 at 11:54:55 am
close. didn't they beat to death a guy in a wheelchair before taking his wife?
brianS replied on September 1, 2007 at 11:56:16 am
ok. mebbe this is too morbid. don't want to incite somebody to firebomb a McDonald's or anything.
how about tying him down, fixing his eyes open and forcing him to watch footage of him berting up bunts while listening to classical music???
Rhubarb_Runner replied on September 1, 2007 at 11:58:00 am
yeah, that should do it.
Make it The Wiggles instead of Beethoven, though. He deserves that much.
Banjo replied on September 1, 2007 at 12:00:26 pm
Fruit salad...yummy, yummy..

I was thinking the soundtrack to "Once More, With Feeling"
Rhubarb_Runner replied on September 1, 2007 at 11:58:54 am
no, the guy in the wheelchair gets some revenge later in the movie.
ubelmann replied on September 1, 2007 at 11:52:33 am
Way to work the pitcher, Tyny. 26 pitches and 7 outs for Duckworth.
brianS replied on September 1, 2007 at 11:53:01 am
Dazz talking about Twins who "just didn't understand" the part of the game that involves bunting. Hah.
ubelmann replied on September 1, 2007 at 11:54:00 am
JB is a regular hit parade these days. It's at least nice to see him cement his spot at SS for next year.
Rhubarb_Runner replied on September 1, 2007 at 11:54:54 am
Being in StL, of course, we heard about Ankiel's GS, big-time. Didn't realize it was off Everyday Eddie, though.
Rhubarb_Runner replied on September 1, 2007 at 11:55:57 am
great Enhanced Gameday on Morneau there. total respect
ubelmann replied on September 1, 2007 at 11:57:21 am
Yeah, that looks like what the plan against someone like Vlad Guerrero should be.
brianS replied on September 1, 2007 at 11:58:37 am
jeez. Is Cuddy channeling his inner Vlad G??
Nick N. replied on September 1, 2007 at 11:58:45 am
Today is SBG convention day? I thought it was Sept. 22?
Banjo replied on September 1, 2007 at 12:01:27 pm
It is the 22nd...I think the 11:00am start threw off the Ubelmench.
ubelmann replied on September 1, 2007 at 12:02:29 pm
You know me all too well, Banjo.
Banjo replied on September 1, 2007 at 12:03:29 pm
Coulda used that good breakfast today...a little foggy after last night's happy hour.

Nick N. replied on September 1, 2007 at 12:02:59 pm
Good.. there's no way I would have been able to go this morning, I'm still recovering from last night. I went to the game with Twins Geek and his wife and co-workers, he bought me like 10 drinks.
ubelmann replied on September 1, 2007 at 12:01:58 pm
You're right. I forgot that the Twins have two of these 11am games.
ubelmann replied on September 1, 2007 at 11:59:29 am
Sure would be nice to thaw out Cuddyer a bit one of these days.
Rhubarb_Runner replied on September 1, 2007 at 11:59:33 am
Cuddy fouled off ball 3 and ball 4 that AB.
Rhubarb_Runner replied on September 1, 2007 at 12:03:37 pm
A couple starts ago, Carlos was knockin' on 4.00 ERA's door. He could get to 4.11 with a CG shutout.
btw, what was that about Silva going to a sidearm delivery to K a batter in the first? Did I hear Dazzle right?
ubelmann replied on September 1, 2007 at 12:04:50 pm
Costa with a "stand up ground rule" double according to Dazz. Tie game.
ubelmann replied on September 1, 2007 at 12:10:32 pm
Silva really did make a pretty good pitch there. One of the dangers of living in a contact-pitcher's world I guess.
Rhubarb_Runner replied on September 1, 2007 at 12:11:39 pm
"The wheels on the bus fall off, off, off..."
ubelmann replied on September 1, 2007 at 12:13:10 pm
Not too far off, thanks to the lucky break on the automatic double.
ubelmann replied on September 1, 2007 at 12:12:31 pm
Heh, under Moss' rule, Pena would score whether or not that was a ground rule double. The way it is currently just makes no sense. Everyone knows that Pena would've scored on that.
ubelmann replied on September 1, 2007 at 12:18:02 pm
Per coolstandings.com, the Mariners' playoff odds fell every day from Aug. 25th to Aug. 31st, going from 56.4% to 14.7%. That's some kind of precipitous drop.
Rhubarb_Runner replied on September 1, 2007 at 12:18:58 pm
L-Rod's been saving up these hits for several weeks now. He's been taking copious notes on Punto's ABs, then negating them.
Rhubarb_Runner replied on September 1, 2007 at 12:28:47 pm
cr@p! look at those three "balls" on Gameday thrown to Gordon. ridiculous
Homer
ubelmann replied on September 1, 2007 at 12:34:06 pm
Torii Torii Hunter Hunter
Banjo replied on September 1, 2007 at 12:36:04 pm
I really hope Hunter can get 30 HR again this year.
ubelmann replied on September 1, 2007 at 12:36:25 pm
Yeah, Silva's not the sort of pitcher that can deal well with getting squeezed.
ubelmann replied on September 1, 2007 at 12:39:48 pm
Kubel!! Twins up 4-3 now.
ubelmann replied on September 1, 2007 at 12:46:23 pm
Often, managers seem to play match-ups too much, so I don't feel like I say this a lot, but did the Royals really want to bring in a lefty to face Redmond in that situation? Seems like a weird decision.
brianS replied on September 1, 2007 at 12:48:45 pm
Walking Punto should be grounds for being DFA'd.
Sounds like Gordo agrees.
brianS replied on September 1, 2007 at 12:51:38 pm
Why hell wasn't Tyner swinging on that last fastball?
brianS replied on September 1, 2007 at 12:53:42 pm
jiminy! Bart getting hammered by the Official Scorer??
Rhubarb_Runner replied on September 1, 2007 at 12:54:05 pm
Tried twice to post a rally cap last inning, only to be thwarted by the server. Guess it's a Royals fan?
brianS replied on September 1, 2007 at 12:58:29 pm
Score that a "WW" for the server.
ubelmann replied on September 1, 2007 at 12:56:07 pm
Dazz said Kubel went sprinting by JB on that dropped pop-up. Seems rather silly for him not to call off Bartlett there. Oh well...
Rhubarb_Runner replied on September 1, 2007 at 1:28:20 pm
Not necessarily. Happens a lot in softball, where someone is called off late, and instead of trying to stop their momentum, just sidestep a bit and run past the play. It's more common in the OF, where one fielder will veer behind the other. Still, when that happens, as in this case, Kubel should be confirming by shouting, "Yours! Yours!" so Barty is aware that he's not going to get smeared when he makes the play.
brianS replied on September 1, 2007 at 1:02:09 pm
Bart, Hunter, Morny this inning. Now is the time to put this game away.
brianS replied on September 1, 2007 at 1:07:14 pm
Or not. Sheesh.

I think the Nation decided that Baker's masterpiece last night was a good place to call it a season. Ended on a good note.
Rhubarb_Runner replied on September 1, 2007 at 1:30:11 pm
just noticed that Neshek's release point on Gameday is almost below the horizon line.
brianS replied on September 1, 2007 at 1:35:21 pm
I'm handing the hot potato back to you, Rhu_Ru. Gotta go be parental. Get out of this, Sideshow!!!
Rhubarb_Runner replied on September 1, 2007 at 1:38:09 pm
Otay. And, get out of this, Nathan! (Nathan?!)
Rhubarb_Runner replied on September 1, 2007 at 1:40:30 pm
Gordo reports that this is Nathan's first appearance prior to the 9th since early May, when he recorded his 8th save. So it's been a while. And hasn't pitched since 24th of August.
Since the season is "over", does this mean that Gardy is trying some other things, including managerial moves that actually make some sense?
Rhubarb_Runner replied on September 1, 2007 at 1:41:50 pm

Rhubarb_Runner replied on September 1, 2007 at 1:45:49 pm
