Game 138: Labor Day

September 3rd, 2007 by ubelmann

C.C. Sabathia vs. Johan Santana

As best as I can tell, this will be just the fourth time that Sabathia and Santana have been matched up head-to-head. As two of the league's best pitchers, this game has the potential to be a fun pitcher's duel.

In games that Santana started this year, the Twins are 16-14. Last year, the Twins were 27-7 in games that Santana started. I suspect this has a lot to do with the "what's wrong with Santana" rumblings. To be sure, Santana's not been quite as good as he was last year, but he's still been very, very good and the run support has not been as good.

Earlier in the season, I wondered if Santana had mostly abandoned his slider after seeing what happened to Liriano. It turns out that the slider is being blamed for his fingernail problems, though, so that seems more likely to me why he's only using it 4-5 times a game now. It's a shame, because it's a good pitch and it makes him a better pitcher, but if the slider could make the fingernail problem so bad that he couldn't pitch at all, obviously there's a good reason for him to stick with the fastball and the change-up.

That Santana can be one of baseball's elite starting pitchers using essentially just two pitches is a testament to just how great those two pitches are.

No L-Rod today! But we do get Punto and Rondelle...need Punto's defense for Santana, I assume. But not throwing Buscher to Sabathia is at least defensible.

Tyner in the lineup but not leading off, is that allowed?

kg2005 replied on September 3, 2007 at 12:39:45 pm

No. Putting Tyner in the lineup is not allowed.

GreekHouse replied on September 3, 2007 at 1:11:46 pm

Is it so much to ask that Santana throw a perfect game with 21K today?

GreekHouse replied on September 3, 2007 at 1:19:59 pm

I guess so.

kg2005 replied on September 3, 2007 at 1:32:32 pm

I'm guessing a one-hitter. A loss.

New Britain Bo replied on September 3, 2007 at 1:23:27 pm

Reasons-to-like-Redmond++.

kg2005 replied on September 3, 2007 at 1:26:24 pm

Well, that was a better start than his last game against Cleveland.

Andrew replied on September 3, 2007 at 1:27:26 pm

It could have been a lot worse too.

New Britain Bo replied on September 3, 2007 at 1:29:40 pm

Errorr Flynn.

GreekHouse replied on September 3, 2007 at 1:30:28 pm

White, Tyner, Punto, and Casilla all hitting in a row.

Wow. Just wow.

New Britain Bo replied on September 3, 2007 at 1:34:21 pm

Another brain-phart by the yearling.

kg2005 replied on September 3, 2007 at 1:35:19 pm

Hurts even more now.

New Britain Bo replied on September 3, 2007 at 1:35:29 pm

But the real problem was the Face FC.

Big Mak replied on September 3, 2007 at 1:35:53 pm

They just turned a leadoff double into a man on first with 2 outs without scoring a run.

And I'm hardly surprised at all.

Andrew replied on September 3, 2007 at 1:37:05 pm

And I’m hardly surprised at all.

Agreed. Sadly.

I saw that and just though "Of course he did"

Andrew replied on September 3, 2007 at 1:37:38 pm

MVP could have had an RBI if Casilla didn't make that out on the basepaths.

kg2005 replied on September 3, 2007 at 1:40:44 pm

Johan is not getting calls low in the zone. Tough to strike a guy out when he doesn't have to swing at anythying.

kg2005 replied on September 3, 2007 at 1:42:33 pm

Angel Hernandez costs Johan another run.

New Britain Bo replied on September 3, 2007 at 1:43:46 pm

Cuban/Venezuelan rivalry?

Andrew replied on September 3, 2007 at 1:48:02 pm

I don't like Angel Hernandez. He's made some questionable calls against the Twins before.

I'm probably being unfair and he's not called anything more or less than anyone else, but I remember him doing it. Either way, he's on my list.

New Britain Bo replied on September 3, 2007 at 1:49:49 pm

Angel threw organist out of a game for playing theme to Mickey Mouse show once.

Rhubarb_Runner replied on September 3, 2007 at 1:57:47 pm

They can be touchy that way. Much like college basketball refs don't like the (volunteer) pep band playing Three Blind Mice

Three of those B's looked like strikes on Gameday.

Rhubarb_Runner replied on September 3, 2007 at 1:45:48 pm

oh, man! I run off to grab some lunch for Mrs. Runner (she has strep), and you let the game go to h3ll in a handbag.

kg2005 replied on September 3, 2007 at 1:47:25 pm

Kubel's fault.

Jeff A replied on September 3, 2007 at 2:48:59 pm

Mrs. Runner seems to be having lots of health problems lately. How did things turn out with the diverticulitis?

New Britain Bo replied on September 3, 2007 at 1:53:39 pm

Twins batters are scrolling in Gameday like a rolodex.

kg2005 replied on September 3, 2007 at 2:03:00 pm

Johan, I don't think the Twins hitters can keep up with this one run per inning thing.

Rhubarb_Runner replied on September 3, 2007 at 2:05:08 pm

Can they even keep up the one hit per inning?

GreekHouse replied on September 3, 2007 at 2:05:35 pm

I'm holding Bartlett personally responsible for all 3 of those runs. He's been terrible out there today.

Andrew replied on September 3, 2007 at 2:06:52 pm

Only 1 K through 3 IP. I guess I was spoiled by the 17.

New Britain Bo replied on September 3, 2007 at 2:07:03 pm

Santana 65 pitches in 3I - cat PowerBars > /etc/Neshek

Rhubarb_Runner replied on September 3, 2007 at 2:08:59 pm

Good God - check out Casilla's first 2 pitches on Gameday. What's with that?

kg2005 replied on September 3, 2007 at 2:10:28 pm

That's hilarious. Consistency at its finest.

New Britain Bo replied on September 3, 2007 at 2:11:39 pm

Cuban/Dominican rivalry?

New Britain Bo replied on September 3, 2007 at 2:10:11 pm

Laddie gets on base again. Time to pay attention to those base paths, boyo!

kg2005 replied on September 3, 2007 at 2:14:07 pm

I'd like to see all of the called strikes and balls overlapped at the end of the game to see exactly what shape the strikezone was. I don't think this one would be convex.

New Britain Bo replied on September 3, 2007 at 2:15:29 pm

N-gon where N goes to infinity.

brianS replied on September 3, 2007 at 6:06:55 pm

unfortunately, I think that the N-gon where N goes to infinity tends toward, umm, a convex set :-(

New Britain Bo replied on September 3, 2007 at 8:21:25 pm

Circle, they call it.

Rhubarb_Runner replied on September 3, 2007 at 2:17:59 pm

It would also be useful if Gameday used (slightly) different colors for a called strike and a swinging strike/foul ball.

New Britain Bo replied on September 3, 2007 at 2:16:40 pm

Sloppy scoring on Gameday (1 out). Mebbe they don't have the A-team covering H. Horatio H. today.

New Britain Bo replied on September 3, 2007 at 2:18:22 pm

At least the Hernandez strike-zone ignores uniforms.

Rhubarb_Runner replied on September 3, 2007 at 2:19:41 pm

Sorry if I'm not totally attentive here. Twins' play lately has my mouse wandering (4 out of 8, btw)

I miss the Johan who dominated the second half. Where did he go?

kg2005 replied on September 3, 2007 at 2:41:53 pm

Then again, even if he had been perfect since the first inning he would still be pitching a losing effort.

New Britain Bo replied on September 3, 2007 at 2:44:37 pm

4 runs on 5 hits so far tells you something about our defense today.

kg2005 replied on September 3, 2007 at 2:47:02 pm

Casilla owns Sabathia.

New Britain Bo replied on September 3, 2007 at 2:47:43 pm

Laddie 3 of the Twins 5 hits.

kg2005 replied on September 3, 2007 at 2:49:03 pm

At least the Twins are keeping up with the 1 hit per inning thing.

davidwatts replied on September 3, 2007 at 2:48:49 pm

I lvoe how the TV folk were playing this up as a crucial series, as if we were still in the playoff hunt

Jeff A replied on September 3, 2007 at 2:50:46 pm

Well, to be fair, they do have to try to convince people to watch these games.

New Britain Bo replied on September 3, 2007 at 2:51:04 pm

Gladden-hire doing the same thing - 'we sweep this Series and then we could be back into it!' *passes pipe to Gardo*

kg2005 replied on September 3, 2007 at 2:50:16 pm

Dear God, they left Johan in there? He'as already at 99 pitches! What does he have left to prove today?

kg2005 replied on September 3, 2007 at 2:54:03 pm

Well, I guess it's ok if it's a 6 pitch inning.

Rhubarb_Runner replied on September 3, 2007 at 2:51:11 pm

I wonder how the Twins are even getting butts into the stands, with how poorly the Twins' O has been. Even Johan pitching isn't much of a draw lately.

Meanwhile, that "ball" on the first pitch to Gomez is another doosy.

Jeff A replied on September 3, 2007 at 2:51:48 pm

I've only been able to watch/listen to bits and pieces, but the Twins sure seem to be playing a sloppy game today. When the front office acts like it doesn't care, does that spill over onto the field?

davidwatts replied on September 3, 2007 at 2:55:36 pm

I am guessing yes

Jeff A replied on September 3, 2007 at 2:55:49 pm

There's respect for the Twins' offense---it's only the sixth inning, and the Indians are already making defensive substitutions.

New Britain Bo replied on September 3, 2007 at 3:01:09 pm

Wynken, Blynken, and Nod there. CC is Juggernaut.

Jeff A replied on September 3, 2007 at 3:01:15 pm

Do you suppose we'll see Neshek again today?

Rhubarb_Runner replied on September 3, 2007 at 3:01:38 pm

This is starting to remind me of the end of the 1984 (1985?) season, when the Twins dropped a 10-0 lead to the Indians to lose 11-10, and then lose the last 10 games of the season. At least, that's the way I remember it.

kg2005 replied on September 3, 2007 at 3:03:44 pm

Funny, this 4-0 game feels more like a 10-0 deficit.

New Britain Bo replied on September 3, 2007 at 3:09:20 pm

Poor pitch calls, sloppy defense, poor base running, no offense - I bet the dugout is not a happy place right now.

Jeff A replied on September 3, 2007 at 3:16:08 pm

It's not happy, but I get a strong feeling of apathy. The front office doesn't seem to care, the manager doesn't seem to care, and a lot of the players don't seem to care. That probably isn't a fair assessment, but if they do care, I'd sure like them all to act in a way that proves it.

StatFreak101 replied on September 3, 2007 at 3:14:25 pm

So are the Twins the only organization that allows inferior players to play over the superior ones?

Jeff A replied on September 3, 2007 at 3:19:23 pm

It's really not even that so much as they allow guys who have proven they can't do the job to play over people they aren't sure about. I know it's beating a dead horse to talk about Punto, but he's the obvious example. Despite being the worst offensive player in the league, he continues to play every game, even though the Twins are out of the playoff hunt. Rondell White continues to play, even though he would be the worst offensive player if he hadn't been hurt all year. That's why I say it looks like apathy---these things are so obvious, and yet no one does anything about them.

Jeff A replied on September 3, 2007 at 3:30:41 pm

I wonder if we could add Carl, the smartest pitcher in baseball, to the roster as a September call-up. Maybe he could teach these guys how to win.

Jeff A replied on September 3, 2007 at 3:31:51 pm

I'm a little surprised Sabathia is still in the game. I don't know his pitch count, but with the game locked up, it wouldn't hurt Cleveland to get him a little extra rest this late in the year.

New Britain Bo replied on September 3, 2007 at 3:37:44 pm

New Britain Bo replied on September 3, 2007 at 3:40:26 pm

brianS replied on September 3, 2007 at 11:04:15 pm

Yup.

It's really pretty much the same story three times over. But I love JB's MacGyverish approach to hand-to-hand combat. I'm even willing to overlook the rather ludicrous nature of his ability to move from country to country with such ease; have his girlfriend du film not have her computer account locked out immediately upon her disappearance (and be able to waltz into what should be an uber-secure system for giving directions to "assets"); and the simplicity with which he's able to jimmy through back doors into The Bad Boss's office without anyone noticing. Puh-leeze.

but, seriously. I'm a Star Trek fan, so I'm used to suspending disbelief. The Boy™ and I were thoroughly entertained.

and I loved the re-use of the (Moby?) song at the end.

Rondelle shouldn't be in the lineup the rest of the year. Play Garrett Jones, Buscher, Tyner, Kubel...anyone else, even if the pitcher is left-handed.

Anyone else catch the shot of Johan after Punto struck out looking for the second time? Definitely not amused.

themoff02 replied on September 3, 2007 at 4:54:30 pm

A little part of my willingness to follow this team dies every time I see Rondelle and Punto in the lineup. It is starting to become a slap in the face of Twins fans.
