This 1978 Special Baseball Issue's cover story is titled "Baseball 1978 - Masters in Our Midst" and is found on pages 36-39: Last season's extraordinary performances by these two quiet players were unduly obscured by Reggie Jackson's World Series slugging.  Even the selection of Carew and Foster as their leagues' Most Valuable Players led to little fanfare.  But as the[ir ...] statistics ... indicate, they were not garden-variety MVPs.  Ruth and Cobb would have been proud of what Carew and Foster wrought in 1977.  Carew is assured of a place in the Hall of Fame, even if he never gets another hit; if Foster has a couple more seasons like '77, he'll join him in Cooperstown. Not so much an article so much as a collection of stats and tidbits along with some cool action photos.

Additional articles of note include:

  1. Carlos Reutermann's US Grand Prix West win

  2. MLB 1978 preseason summaries; for the Twins: "...the club's other two batting stars, [Lyman] Bostock and Larry Hisle, who drove in a league-leading 119 runs, became free agents and left the Twin Cities.  Their absence will be felt, because the Twins need every hit they can get.  Their pitchers ranked 12th with a 4.36 ERA last season...a fall to fifth this year is likely.  The Twins will still be ahead of Oakland and Seattle, which will battle for the basement..."

  3. Alydar, winner of the Florida Derby

  4. Cornell wins the lacrosse Super Bowl

  5. John Havlicek is retiring after 15 seasons and more games than anyone else ever in the NBA

Personal notes:

  • Uh, is it just me, or does Rod look a whole lot friendlier on that cover?

Foster had some mean chops and was a fearsome hitter. And those are not the unis that we want the Twins to go back to.

I don't particularly care for the home version of that uniform, but I really wouldn't mind seeing powder blue make a reappearance on a alternate uniform (or even the road uni) in the near future. Maybe I'm just so fond of that style because the baseball cards that were out when I started collecting always seemed to have the Twins wearing the powder blues.

I'm of the belief that only UCLA's cheerleaders should wear powder blue.
