Better Know A Citizen - Twayn
September 6th, 2007 by Andrew
Name: Twayn
Hometown: Fort Recovery, Ohio
Town I Currently Live In: Champlin, Minnesota
Profession: Communications.
Bats: Low in the order
Throws: With elbow pain.
Positions: That’s a rather personal question, don’t you think? Oh, you mean...?! Second base and emergency outfielder.
Greatest Career Achievement in Baseball/Softball/T-ball: Batting sixth in the lineup when our Little League team was decimated by a rare convergence of Boy Scout and church camps.
Hobbies: I don’t have hobbies so much as I have interests because they require less commitment. I like fishing, bicycling, reading, writing, photography, history, metaphysics, cinema, computers and games, and whatever shiny object I happen to spot on any given day.
What are you known for around the WGOM? Bijocularity. I can deliver a straight line or a punch line with equal panache and aplomb.
If you could have a nice, polite dinner with any 3 people - dead or alive - who and why? Julius Caesar, Benjamin Franklin, and Albert Einstein, because I find them fascinating and I would love to pick their brains for a few hours. And I would like them to be alive, please. It makes for more lively conversation.
If you could pick any 3 people - again, dead or alive - to go out and party with, who and why? Bill Murray, Howie Mandel, and Chris Rock. It’s my party and I can laugh if I want to.
Sports Allegiances: Minnesota Twins, Cleveland Browns, SCSU Huskies, Minnesota Gophers.
Favorite Books: The Lord of the Rings. The Masters of Rome series by Colleen McCullough. Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance. Red Smith on Baseball. The Crack in the Cosmic Egg. Hitting into the Wind by Bill Meissner. The Dragons of Eden. Stranger in a Strange Land. Foucault’s Pendulum. Golf in the Kingdom. Lonesome Dove. The Learning Tree. Anything by Vonnegut, Steinbeck, Hemingway, and a wide variety of other 20th century American authors. I’m a pathological reader and this could go on a long, long time if I let it, so I’ll just end it here.
Favorite Baseball Movie: Field of Dreams. My wife and I were living in Iowa when it came out. We even made a pilgrimage to Dyersville to see the field a couple of years later. But my favorite baseball book would have to be Bang the Drum Slowly, followed closely by Ball Four.
Favorite Non-baseball Movie: A toss-up between Casablanca and To Kill a Mockingbird.
Favorite Music: The Blues.
Favorite Food & Drink: Beef tenderloin with crab legs, and The Macallan sherry oak single malt. Just kidding – I don’t know anything about cognac. But I like a nice pinot noir or cabernet with my roasted meat, and I’m fond of beer with peanuts or popcorn.
Favorite TV Shows: Sticking to shows currently in production, I’ll go with Mad Men, Lost, Big Love, Dirt, The Riches, Extras, Flight of the Conchords, and Two and a Half Men. I had high hopes for John from Cincinnati, but Milch rather disappointed with that one. And I thought HBO’s Rome series was genius.
Favorite Twins Player, historically: Kirby Puckett. I got to meet him while producing an Opening Day segment when I was in the TV news business. I had to put a wireless microphone on him and as I fumbled repeatedly to insert the battery pack into his back pocket, Kirby turned his head and said in a rather exaggerated voice for the benefit of the other nearby players, “What’s taking you so long with that thing, man? I think you’re having too much fun back there.” And then he laughed, and so did the camera man, and all the players who saw my initial mortified reaction, and then I laughed, too. Definitely Kirby.
Favorite Twins Player, currently: I have to go with Johan Santana. But I really likes my Cuddyer, Mauer, Morneau, Nathan and Neshek.
Best Twins Memory: Dating my wife during the 1987 season and playoffs. Falling in love and watching your team win a pennant and its first World Series is pretty special.
Favorite Sport to Play: Golf. Turns out my terrible swing works better with a 5-iron in hand and a ball that’s not moving.
Favorite Sport to Watch: Baseball.
If I could live anywhere in the world, I’d live in: Actually, I could live anywhere in the world if I really put my mind to it, but for now I choose to live in Minnesota because that’s where my wife is. I would like to have a little cabin with a stone fireplace by a trout stream in the Rocky Mountains someday, though.
If I was commissioner for a day, I’d: Move one NL Central team to the AL West, cut interleague play by half, bring better balance to the unbalanced schedule, and in order to ensure the continuing integrity of the great game of baseball I would force the Minnesota Twins to acquire an honest-to-God designated hitter.
If I had Terry Ryan’s job for a day, I’d: Acquire an honest-to-God designated hitter and make a clumsy, ill-fated pass at his secretary.
Favorite Ballpark: Dodger Stadium for its retro ambiance, but I attended my first major league game(s) at Crosley Field and it will always be special to me. It was a double header, and Hank Aaron hit number 3,000th in his second at bat of the day. The second game went 15 innings, I think.
Favorite blogs: SBG, Gleeman, TwinsGeek, MN Gameday, Seth Speaks, Nick & Nick’s, Greet Machine, Coffeyville Whirlwind, Fire Joe Morgan, Deadspin, and Batgirl (you know, if she still ran the greatest blog ever).
Next to Aaron's 3000th hit, have you ever been in attendance for a milestone like that? No, that was pretty special and very hard to top. And it was 20 years before I attended another major league game.
What do you think of the movie Sideways? I thought it was excellent. I like Paul Giamatti and I’ve always had a thing for Virginia Madsen. I know they aren’t everyone’s cup of hemlock, but I really like smart, character-driven narratives that explore personal relationships and social conventions.
Fly-fishing or bait fishing? I did a little fly fishing for trout when I lived in Colorado, but never enough to get very good at it. We sometimes rigged up spinning rods with bubble floats and flies, which work really well when there’s foilage close to the water. I mostly fish for walleye and northern these days, and I caught a nice muskie on Leech Lake several years ago, but I’m liking smallmouth fishing more and more, and I enjoy taking the kids fishing for sunnies and crappies.
What's the biggest fish you've ever caught? A 35” northern pike out of Lac Sul, Ontario.
Now, for real - what's the biggest fish you've ever caught? A 35” northern pike. Keepers had to be at least 36”, so it went back in the water, but I have a dandy picture. Also, it bit me and left a tooth in my thumb as I was getting ready to release it. That tooth stayed in there for three weeks until it finally festered and I could dig it out with a sewing needle. So I got to savor that particular catch longer than most.
Let's just say that the map is bigger now...

BKAC Update
I am running very low on entrants. I have next Tuesday and me, that's it. One could say I'm out of people. If you want to sign up drop me a line at sbg-bkac [AT] hotmail [DOT] com or email SBG.
Also, I am moving into my new apartment in Des Moines next Tuesday, so I may be without Internet access for awhile and may be forced into a BKAC hiatus. I don't see that happening since I live only a few blocks from the DM Public Library and my girlfriend has access in her dorm room. I'm hesitant to post my entry because I want to make sure I'm around for the discussion. I'll definitely do my best to keep things running, but if a posting date gets skipped, that's why.
And thanks again to everyone who has participated, both with the questionnaire and the discussion.
SBG replied on September 6, 2007 at 10:45:04 am
There are a few more citizens that can be profiled, if they step up, that is.
New Britain Bo replied on September 6, 2007 at 10:17:03 pm
Are you implying that they are, I mean, well, transparent?
Rhubarb_Runner replied on September 6, 2007 at 10:29:42 am
Way to extend the map, dude!
I was dating my wife also during the '87 post season, so it's special to me for the same reason. Did your wife share any of your excitement for the Twins?
Virginia Madsen is my age and shares my birthday, even. I think I first saw her in Creator, and she's under-appreciated.
I think you're on the right track; it may actually take an action from the commisioner to get a good DH on the Twins!

It takes a Nation...
Did your wife share any of your excitement for the Twins?
Absolutely, and she still does. It's one of her most endearing qualities.
CarterHayes replied on September 6, 2007 at 1:47:36 pm

It'd be pretty awesome if the Twins could use the image file for the map of the Nation (assuming they issue a welcome during the Convention).
SBG replied on September 6, 2007 at 2:02:25 pm
Now we need to get frightwig done and then we'd have an even wider map.
New Britain Bo replied on September 6, 2007 at 9:04:37 pm
Rhu_Ru, Twayn: Was also dating my wife and got two clinches in '87.

NBB: is that the equivalent of second base?
I was, umm, uhh, living in sin with the future Mrs S by that summer. And taunting my Cardinals-loving future father-in-law in his own living room. Not as good as being there, but still good.
New Britain Bo replied on September 6, 2007 at 10:04:52 pm
No, silly, Pennant and the other.
Jeff A replied on September 7, 2007 at 12:40:23 pm
1987 was apparently a darn good year for the Nation. I began dating the future Mrs. A that year.
SBG replied on September 7, 2007 at 12:48:14 pm
I wasn't dating any women that I was in love with in 1987, but Indiana won a National Championship in BBall and SBGville won a State Championship in FBall.
brianS replied on September 6, 2007 at 10:34:14 am
I thought the phrase was "and never the twayn shall meet"??? Put the lie to that sucker.
Nice kirby story. Howie Mandel? Seriously?
and nice courtship story. apparently it wasn't just the euphoria talking, since the marriage seems to have stuck.
NBB: we are all waiting!
SBG replied on September 6, 2007 at 10:42:47 am
What are we waiting for? NBB has been profiled.
Andrew replied on September 6, 2007 at 10:48:30 am
What are we waiting for? NBB has been profiled.
That's exactly what I thought. So I went an re-read NBB's entry and it still made no sense. Now I have to go find this $6 rat story.
brianS replied on September 6, 2007 at 11:11:23 am
No, I'm waiting for NBB's screenplay of Twayn's dinner.
SBG replied on September 6, 2007 at 11:30:27 am
Aha! Yes, a glorious feature of the BKAC series.
Andrew replied on September 6, 2007 at 11:44:54 am
Now I got it. Geeze I'm slow today.
twayn replied on September 6, 2007 at 10:45:38 am
If you ever heard Howie tell his $6 rat story, you'd understand.
SBG replied on September 6, 2007 at 11:04:58 am
How did you end up in Minnesota?
twayn replied on September 6, 2007 at 11:25:03 am
My father took a new job in Minnesota during my senior year in high school. Since my mother was teaching at the time, the rest of us stayed in Colorado to finish the school year and then moved right after my graduation. My chief consolation that summer was watching the Twins games every night, and having a couple of cold Schmidt's while watching.
Banjo replied on September 6, 2007 at 11:06:42 am
About 4 months ago I downloaded an audio version of Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance and was listening to it at night. It had been about 7-8 years sice I had last re-read it, and it was actually quite good to listen to. The actor who did the reading was tremendous.
E-6 replied on September 6, 2007 at 11:20:54 am
I really enjoyed your contributions to Batgirl. Here? Not so much... (I kid!)
Have you ever listened to the Sideways commentary track with Giamotti and Thomas Hayden Church? It's absolutely hilarious. It also sounds like they enjoyed a bit of the grape while doing it.
SBG replied on September 6, 2007 at 11:29:37 am
twayn has the green light to post on the front page whenever he wants.
E-6 replied on September 6, 2007 at 11:32:36 am
Whattaya gonna make us beg, Twayn?
twayn replied on September 6, 2007 at 12:06:58 pm
Actually, I've been meaning to start posting from time to time, but ubelmann has the market cornered on statistical analysis (never my forte anyway) and SBG is pretty quick with the snark, so I'm still looking for a niche to fill. I have done a few articles for GameDay this year, which has been fun (and TwinsGeek actually pays for content). I have one in the September issue titled The Cost of Character, so be sure to pick one up when you're at the Dome this month.
Also, if anyone's interested in the whole story of the courtship of Twayn's wife during the 1987 season, you can read about it here.
brianS replied on September 6, 2007 at 12:17:49 pm
ahh, you just linked that for the butt shot.
twayn replied on September 6, 2007 at 12:28:30 pm
Damn, am I that transparent? Just call me Mister Cellophane.
SBG replied on September 6, 2007 at 12:49:54 pm
Good story.
Rhubarb_Runner replied on September 6, 2007 at 1:14:29 pm
You want a niche to fill at WGOM, twayn? How about resurrecting the photo contest?
SBG replied on September 6, 2007 at 2:04:43 pm
It could compete with Great Moments in Enhanced Gameday History!
twayn replied on September 6, 2007 at 2:14:52 pm
I'll think about that. In the meantime, if you're still looking for book reviews, I'd be happy to do a review of Hitting Into the Wind. Bill Meissner was my favorite professor in college and I took several of his creative writing courses. He's also a big baseball fan and just an excellent writer. Let me know if you're interested.
Rhubarb_Runner replied on September 6, 2007 at 2:48:17 pm
Absolutely! I'm at an impass right now, so any incoming review(s) will prime the pump again. Fire one off when you get the chance.
Moss replied on September 6, 2007 at 7:40:59 pm
Moss enjoyed Sideways too. There's one line by Paul G. that always makes Moss crack up just thinking about it:
"If anyone orders Merlot, I'm leaving. I am NOT drinking any f***ing Merlot!"
What's the story with TR's secretary?
Andrew replied on September 6, 2007 at 11:59:35 am
Golf. Turns out my terrible swing works better with a 5-iron in hand and a ball that’s not moving.
Looks like we're exactly opposite. One day I was in the group of trees on a dogleg right where I usually end up (and when I say usually, I've found my balls from weeks ago there before) and I was standing over the ball thinking "Stupid *(&@^(@#& golf. The only way this could possibly be harder is if the ball was moving while I was trying to hit it." Then I thought "Wait, that would be baseball."
CarterHayes replied on September 6, 2007 at 1:51:22 pm
Read any Walker Percy, twayn? If not, might I recommend The Moviegoer?
twayn replied on September 6, 2007 at 2:10:21 pm
I haven't, but this does sound like a book I'd enjoy. Thanks for the tip, I'll look for it next time I'm at the bookstore.
CarterHayes replied on September 6, 2007 at 7:55:15 pm
I'll be interested to know your reaction. I've gotten a lot of positive feedback on that one.
Banjo replied on September 6, 2007 at 3:53:33 pm
CH- Forgot to tell you, thumbs up on the Dick Cureless. Throw in Wisconsin's own Dave Duddley and you're ready for a road trip.
CarterHayes replied on September 6, 2007 at 7:54:00 pm
Now, I have never heard of Dave Duddley, so I'm going to have to poke th' Interwebs and see what I can find.
Banjo replied on September 6, 2007 at 7:57:37 pm
Dave Dudley of "Six Days on the Road" fame and "Truck Drivin' Son of a Gun."
CarterHayes replied on September 8, 2007 at 2:36:03 pm
I know I've heard "Truck Drivin' Son of a Gun" at some point (though I didn't know the performer), so yes, pair those two guys together and you'd be pretty set. Although really, I'd love to have a vehicle large enough that I could do road trips with an entire bluegrass band in the back.
E-6 replied on September 6, 2007 at 9:20:44 pm
C.Hayes-poke here. The second link is good. click read...
Hype machine is a nice place to find a song or band.
You guys Lee Hazlewood fans? He passed away last month. That cat made some great music.
CarterHayes replied on September 8, 2007 at 2:38:44 pm
Thanks, E-6. I've long used All Music Guide, to the point that I'd never even heard of Hype Machine. Now I've got a new place to poke around.
Lee Hazelwood died? Dang, I knew he had cancer (renal cancer, I see. Eeesh, poor guy). Maybe it's time to get an album in tribute.
Moss replied on September 6, 2007 at 7:35:10 pm
Wouldn't it be "Ambijocularity"?
New Britain Bo replied on September 6, 2007 at 9:57:41 pm
*At Phil's Tara's Hideaway in Stillwater*
Twayn: "Benji, Julie, Al, what can I say - thanks for making it on short notice. You guys are the best! Need another Leinie, Ben?"
Ben: "Quite. Bring it on. Beer is living proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy. Does Phil really make these lamp chops personally?"
Twayn: "Say's so on the menu. Julio, you O.K. ?"
Caesar: "Yeah. Nice salad. I came, I saw, I conquered. Ha, ha. Another glass of champagne. Brut."
Twayn: "(Et tu Brut?). O.K. Al, what's the deal with relativity?"
Einstein: "When you are courting a nice girl an hour seems like a second. When you sit on a red-hot cinder a second seems like an hour. That's relativity."
*From behind the bar we hear: "Hiyo!!"*
