Better Know A Citizen - Seth Stohs
Name: Seth Stohs
Hometown: Perham, MN
Town I Currently Live In: Warroad until Sept. 18th, then Bloomington
Profession: Product Planner
Bats: Right
Throws: Right
Positions: when I was young, I played Shortstop. In high school, played 3B, SS and pitched some. In college, I was a really good scorebook keeper and occasional pinch hitter!
Greatest Career Achievement in Baseball/Softball/T-ball: Sadly it may have come in my first varsity game in high school. It was a few games into my freshman season, and I was the only freshman on a team starting with eight seniors. After a strikeout and a double play, I hit home runs in my next two at bats.
What is it like to have played college ball? I was a 3B going to Concordia College when Chris Coste was there (he played 3B in college), so actually playing time was pretty non-existent. But taking infield with him most days was great, and being a part of that team was a lot of fun. Getting to talk baseball with a great group of teammates was a lot of fun. I only played two years there, but it was a good experience. The highlight may have been getting an at bat against the Gophers and striking out looking (on a ball about 8 inches outside!) against Kerry Ligtenberg.
Hobbies: following the Twins, www.SethSpeaks.net, occasional baseball card collecting
What are you known for around the WGOM? Probably just for not being smart enough to keep up with the intelligent discussion, but linking to the articles so that smart people who read my site can read intelligent postings.
If you could have a nice, polite dinner with any 3 people - dead or alive - who and why? Jennifer Love Hewitt, Bob Uecker, Laura Ingalls-Wilder.
If you could pick any 3 people - again, dead or alive - to go out and party (or if you're not the party type, go for martini's or whatever it is you do) who and why? Babe Ruth, cuz I think we would eat and drink well. Dennis Rodman, as long as I could just be there in the background. It would be interesting, if nothing else... and who knows, maybe Carmen Electra would show up. And, Kendra Wilkerson. No reason necessary.
Sports Allegiances: Twins
Favorite Books: Moneyball, Bo Knows Bo, Kirby Puckett: I Love This Game, Fair Ball, Bad as I Wanna Be, Jim Kaat's Still Pitching.
Favorite Music: Rap and Oldies. I know, I'm weird. I'm contemplating putting together an album which would combine the two genres. I'm thinking a Henry The VII meets the Beastie Boys. Or going the other way, The Monkees perform "In da Club"
Favorite Baseball Movie: How do you pick between Field of Dreams and Bull Durham? So, I'll go with Soul of the Game.
Favorite Non-baseball Movie: So many... Drama - Good Will Hunting, Comedy - anything with Adam Sandler (Mr. Deeds) or Chris Farley (Tommy Boy). Classic Comedy - The Jerk.
Favorite Food & Drink: Chicken, McNuggets, wings, Steak, pork chops, Potatoes, and Diet Pepsi or Diet Dr. Pepper.
Favorite TV Shows: American Idol, Big Love, Grey's Anatomy, I think I may like Tell Me You Love Me.
Favorite Twins Player, historically: like 95% of Minnesotans whose prominent years were in the 80s, it was Kirby Puckett.
Favorite Twins Player, currently: I don't even really know. Neshek, Slowey, Casilla... but probably Michael Cuddyer. (or Morneau, or Mauer, or Bartlett, or Kubel, or Francisco, or Johan, or Garza, or...)
Best Twins Memory: When I was probably 8 or 9, I was at a Twins game and Red Sox pitcher John Henry Johnson flipped a BP ball to me. I got Kirby Puckett to autograph it and another player. I went by the dugout and dropped the ball to Dave Engle. He looked at the ball and said, "Thank you, we need more practice balls." And then he dropped the ball into a ball bag. I was about to turn around and walk away, but he kinda chuckled and said, "Wait, Wait, I'm just kidding." He signed it and tossed it back up. It is funny now... What isn't funny though... I don't know what ever happened to that ball.
Favorite Sport to Play: current - Table Tennis
Favorite Sport to Watch: Baseball
If I could live anywhere in the world, I’d live in: central Minnesota on a lake, but I've always said that I wish that I would have spent a year in New York, and a year in LA, and months in Paris and London and other places.
If I was commissioner for a day, I’d: Work with every chemist in the country to provide assistance to finding a test for HGH. Then I'd go after Gene Orza and the Players Association to make testing for HGH become a reality. And, I would send a proper congratulations to Barry Bonds.
If I had Terry Ryan’s job for a day, I’d: Offer Nick Punto to every team and if anyone offers anything, say yes. If not, release him. Offer Torii a 4 year, $54 million deal. Offer Morneau a five year, $72 million deal. Offer Joe Nathan a three year, $24 million deal. Offer Santana 5 years, $100 million. Offer Michael Cuddyer a four year, $33 million deal. Offer Jason Kubel a five year, $14.5 million deal. Offer Pat Neshek a 3 year, $3.3 million deal. Offer Matt Guerrier a two year, $2.8 million deal with a third year team option. Hire Ubelman to be special statistical analyst for the GM. Sign myself to a four year deal, salary negotiable. I would worry about the DH and 3B positions on Day 2, if I was offered a 2nd day on the job.
Favorite Ballpark: Coors Field... I like Miller Park too.
Favorite blogs: SBG is the WGOM!!! On the Road with Pat Neshek, Josh's Thoughts, Nick & Nick, The Baseball Savant, Taylor's Twins Thoughts, Twins Geek, Twins Insider, Around the Majors, Section 220, Reds Reporter, Al's Ramblings, MLB Trade Rumors. And probably more.
Re: Your favorite music - Have you heard Danger Mouse's "The Gray Album"? I haven't heard that. I used to listen to a lot of current music, but once XM Radio came out with the all-baseball, all the time Home Plate Network, it's about the only thing I listen to anymore!
Coors Field and Miller Park. No love for Busch Stadium? What about PBR Arena? I've only been to Coors and Miller. I'd love to be able to afford to travel to all of the parks.
Did Kerry Lightenberg have his crazy facial hair when you faced him? No. But I have tried to work the "jutted-outs" myself awhile back. It didn't work as well.
How cool is it to have your old teammate Chris Coste in the major league? Seriously, it's incredible. I've never been around someone who just 'gets it' when it comes to baseball the way he does. And, his love of the game is so obvious and apparent. Add to that, the small school background, 5 years of independent league baseball, four years of AAA... and finally getting the call. it had to have been an incredible feeling for him. To have overcome as much as he has overcome in terms of baseball and people telling him that he couldn't, and he has, and he's been better than good. It's a tremendous story. I can't wait to read the book (which is supposed to be coming out next spring). And the best part is that he is still a tremendous person who doesn't take any of it for granted.
What is your favorite interview you've ever done? It's hard to say because I definitley appreciate all of the players that have taken the time to respond. But, I think it is fair to say that the likes of Kevin Slowey, Pat Neshek, David Winfree, Jeff Manship and now Mike Radcliff have been favorite interviews. I have a couple set up for the next couple of weeks that include some great responses. SBG note: Seth has an interview with Garrett Guzman today.
On the other side of the jump, there lies a map. And on that map, you will see SethSpeaks...

Welcome to the Twin Cities, Seth!
brianS
Seth: I thought your position was "Chris Coste's Publicist"
You da man, Seth. Your site is a daily must for Twins' fans. Keep it up.
All I need is thiiiiis lamp. That's all I need. I don't need anything else.
brianS
ohhh, ohhh, ohh. I almost let this slip.
Now, I have a friend in the academic business who is a Bud man and, when ribbed about it, snarls "you can't go to the Preference Store," but ... McNuggets??!!!
SBG, you need to get Seth together with Banjo for an intervention ASAP.
SBG
Banjo, we need a live "On the Grill" with Seth now that he's down in the Cities.
brianS
Banjo: "We're here today with famed Twins' blogger SethSpeaks for a special edition of On the Grill. Today we're cooking with Chicken McNuggets. How're you doing, Seth?"
*dumps a bag of frozen McNuggets in charcoal chimney. Pours gasoline over and lights on fire*
Seth: "What!!!!!! I was just about to dip!"
Banjo: "Because of the chemical composition of these babies, they will reach a nice, steady, 800 deg. F. in about 3 minutes. Perfect for blast-grilling this beautiful porterhouse right on top of the Chimney, Alton Brown-style. And the McNuggets give an other-worldly flavor to the dry-aged beef. Think of it as Chicken-fried Steak, kicked up a notch."
Seth: "Well!! I do like steak!!!! Hey! Banjo!!! Got any Hamm's?!"
...with apologies to NBB, whose screen-play will be coming up after the break.
SBG
I think Black Label is the proper brew for Chicken Fried Steak. I could be wrong.
mini_tb
Seth, upon pouring the gas on the grill: "Oh Crap! I just burned all 3 hairs off of my head!"
SethSpeaks
Mmmm... Chicken McNuggets!! They are tasty!
And yeah, after reading the Coster comments, I should be his publicist! Ha!
SBG
I love you man, but Chicken McNuggets are what's for dinner in Hell.
Rhubarb_Runner
Reminds me of Leno's "Truth in Advertizing" skit from many years back; he says that Lunchables should be called "Mommy Doesn't Love Me"
Andrew
I'm going to side with Seth here, sorta. I really find McDonald's unappetizing, but if I had to have anything there, it'd be McNuggets.
SDfan
I'm continually impressed by the quality interviews you get, Seth. It's got to be a lot of work keeping up with all the Twins happenings - including all the minor-league affiliates. Thanks for all the hard work - your site is one of three I have bookmarked at home - along with Gleeman and . . . some kind of . . . on-line magazine . . . I cant remember the name at the moment. Lots of gloom and doom.
brianS
but not much Jessica Biel
SethSpeaks
Thanks SDfan, I appreciate it. I like having a feeling as if I know the players and what they are capable of before they get to the Twins roster. That way I have more to base my opinion on that just what Dick and Bert chose to tell us. I like that Dick and Bert tell us that Chris Heintz has caught Kevin Slowey all season in Rochester and yet Slowey told me that Jose Morales caught him in all but one of his starts down there. As for the Q&As, they're just fun. I don't make them hard-hitting and get into the overanalysis in them, but that's so people are willing to do them. Sometimes, if I'm able to get a follow-up Q&A, that's when I may throw an obscure stat or two at them to get their thoughts. But, it's all fun and it's a different perspective. Again, the minor leaguers don't get a lot of recognition, and generally they dont' get a lot of money. But they're working really hard to get to that point, without the glory, so that's why I really like following it as well.

"I'm into McNuggets, y'all." Man, I hate that commercial. But those little Gallus gallus morsels do sound tempting:
brianS
"parts is parts"
reminds me of an unforgettable evening in the metropolis of Wayne, NE (the ancestral homes of my family on both sides).
After avoiding the pre-chewed food at the nursing home (visiting Grandma S), we went to the local "Mexican" eatery. I want a burrito, but the menu says, cryptically, "Meat Burrito".
I ask the pimple-faced corncob behind the counter, "what kind of meat?"
"Meat-meat," he replies, sullenly.
Suddenly, it was all so clear. Soylent Green IS PEOPLE!
ubelmann
I'm no food snob, but even I would refuse to eat a "meat burrito" from a place that refused to even lie to me about what sort of meat was in the burrito.
E-6
Mmmm. Meat-meat.
I can honestly say I've never eaten McNuggets, though I did try some microwavable pre-fab (pre-chewed) pollo piece that my two-year old niece was eating. Not all that tasty.
SBG
I had McNuggets when they first came out and they were so terrible, I've never been tempted again.
Andrew
I've noticed quite the uptick in McNugget quality over the last few years.
Moss
Hey, Moss knows two people from Wayne NE! In fact, one is married to a woman whose father won a Nobel prize in chemistry about 7-8 years ago.
brianS
Wow. Small world, Moss.
My maternal grandfather and uncle were for many years THE doctors in Wayne. I have a lot of fond memories of that little town.
Whiffers
MCNUGGETS, MCNUGGETS, YO
Ketchup and Mayyyo, ketchup and mayyo.
For some reason I can't get enough of that commercial.
SBG
Perhaps you can get the transmissions that are otherwise being sent to my home.
SethSpeaks
I'm a big fan of the commercial... it's like Napolean Dynamite meets the Beastie Boys!
brianS
Knock yerself out, whiffers!
twayn
Yep, the guy on the right looks a lot like Napolean Dynamite. And that fellow on the left has a strong resemblance to Rowan Atkinson.
Moss
Moss' elder children love that commercial!
Dread Pirate Will Young
Speaking of obnoxious commercials, Sheenie just picked up her new vehicle from Minnesota's Number One... Maplewood Toyota.
Welcome to the Twin Cities, Seth. I look forward to finally meeting you on Saturday.
SBG
He can't make it! He has to go back up North to a wedding!
Dread Pirate Will Young
Crap, well that sucks. Seth, we shall meet at some point in the near future. I guarantee it. Maybe when we hold a winter caucus.
brianS
On Yom Kippur?!
It's almost as if these people in Warroad are unaware of the jewish high holy days....
Rhubarb_Runner
Love the interviews, Seth - keep it up!
I only know one person from Perham; do you know Marty Birkel (sp)? Probably ~45 now, so no doubt older than you.
Okay, Concordia Moorhead? A Cobber? Please say no!
SBG
It's not all about you, Rhu_Ru...
Rhubarb_Runner
Ha! okay, good one.
SethSpeaks
I wore the yellow beanie!! Go Cobbers!
Rhubarb_Runner
Ack! Sorry to hear that, Seth (says the Dragon alum)
I remember some great games during the heydays of the Cobber/Dragon FB rivalry (now called "The Power Bowl"). One year ('82?) a HS classmate of mine on the Cobbers caught a pass that set up the game-tying FG (kicked by another HS classmate of mine) in a game that ended in a 3-3 tie. The traitors! And still the provost allowed the beanies to come off, even though no touchdown was scored. We were pretty peeved.
Ah, well, I won't hold it against you, Seth. Got to admit, F/M is a pretty neat college metro area, what with NDSU/MSUM/Cord, there's always something to do.
mini_tb
Seth, I'm trying to picture you in a yellow beanie. Thanks for bringing a smile to my face!
SethSpeaks
I've still got my yellow beanie... well, my replacement after a mean ol' Dragon stole my first one!
Rhubarb_Runner
What?! They're only supposed to steal them from freshman gals and whimpy guys. That's a rules violation!
ubelmann
Seth, I'd say that around here you're probably known as being the Twins bloggers' #1 prospect guru, and blogger with the most connections. I'm always impressed with the interviews you are able to get.
E-6
Far and away, I've learned more about the Twins minor leaguers at your site than anywhere else. Nice work. Now, lets hope some of these guys make it to the bigs, pronto. (And with minimum "jerking around" by the MGR when they do.)
SBG
It should also be pointed out that Seth has been one of the biggest supporters of this site. I don't link to him nearly often enough and he doesn't have an RSS feed, so his posts don't show up in the column on the right, but I've been reading him daily for years and years. Great work, Seth!
SethSpeaks
It goes back to my lack of intelligence. If I could figure out how to put an RSS feed on my site, I would right away! HA!
Dread Pirate Will Young
Seth, I would be more than willing to trade my ability to have a RSS feed for your ability to have a competent server!
SethSpeaks
Well, right now I'm still working on having an internet connection down here, so...
mini_tb
Seth's problem up in the frozen tundra was always finding a competent service provider.
E-6
New Britain Bo is gonna have a field day with your party guests. Or hit a huge writer's block. Odd pairings, to say the least.
SBG
If there's no reference to Jennifer Love Hewitt eating McNuggets, I'm going to be disappointed.
brianS
"I know what you ate last summer"

Party of 5 Pack McNuggets
SBG
Coste was obviously keeping Seth and his .938 college OPS down.
ubelmann
3:2 BB:SO, very nice.
brianS
can you hit lefties, Seth? The Twins mebbe could platoon you.
SethSpeaks
me and my Matthew Lecroy-like physique would be happy with such an opportunity!
SDfan
Is Kendra Wilkinson the "Kendra" from that Playboy show on E!? Not that I've seen it or anything - I've just heard other people talking about it.
SBG
That's a good show to turn on when I'm in a bad mood and want to piss off Lucy.
ubelmann
My friend's wife apparently likes to watch that show, but if my friends makes any kind of comment about the show, it is met with a disgusted sigh and a change of the channel. High comedy.
E-6
Wow, she appears almost life-like. The things they can't do with plastic now days...
twayn
Paging Dr. 90210, paging Dr. 90210....
SethSpeaks
Kendra Wilkinson from MTV Celebrity Rappers!!
E-6
I was going to suggest The Grey Album, too. If you can find it, it's right up your alley, Seth.
Andrew
In my iTunes library, I'm having a bit of a dilemma as to whom to credit as the "Artist" for the Grey Album. The Beatles? Jay-Z? Danger Mouse? I think I'm going with Danger Mouse because he's the one that created the mashup, but that seems to be slighting the contributions of the originals.
Aaron Gleeman
First, Seth is awesome. He's by far the nicest blogger in the history of blogging, Twins or otherwise, and he does a great job filling a much-needed niche in the Twins blogging world.
Beyond that, Chicken McNuggets are great. There was a time when the meat inside them was pretty horrible, and looked dark and dirty. However, a couple years ago they switched to all white meat (or at least something that looks like white meat) and the overall product has improved by about 100 percent.
I went like 10 years without eating a McNugget because they were so awful when I was a kid, but then I tried the improved version and became addicted to them. Unfortunately, I haven't had them since like January of 2006 (although this conversion is making me crave them).
SethSpeaks
Thanks Aaron for the support and the McNugget support. Nice avatar!! Did you put a camera in my house???
twayn
Seth, I've been reading your blog for the last couple of years, and I can truthfully say that more than 90% of what I know about the Twins farm system I learned from you. In fact, whenever someone asks me about a minor leaguer in the system, I send them to your blog for some remedial education. So I want to say thanks for helping make me a better informed fan. Now if I could just find a site or two that can teach me about these sabermetric thingamajigs, I'd be set.
twayn
I thought I was the only guy who's been watching Tell Me You Love Me. My wife and I saw the pilot episode a couple of weeks ago and we were impressed with how the show characterizes the various stages of relationships. The writing is very good, the direction is reminiscent of cinéma vérité, and the acting so far has been quite compelling. Plus, people get naked and have sex at the drop of a hat. So I'm guessing they're trying to appeal to couples with this show by giving women an insightful drama about the trials and tribulations of personal relationships, and by giving us guys the prurient tittilation we demand and deserve.
SethSpeaks
yes, I like it because of the direction of cinema verite! Definitely the cinema verite!
mini_tb
Seth, I'm still pissed off that you moved without telling me!
diehardtwinsfan
Seth, I love your site.
SethSpeaks
Thank you very much!
brianS
NBB, the natives are getting restless. Your fans demand satisfaction.
mini_tb
Seth, you are one heck of a blogger and by far the most passionate and dedicated baseball fan I have ever met. Keep up the great work!!
New Britain Bo
Seth Stohs: “Thanks for driving up north to meet me for breakfast here at the Scandia Calf-A. This place is udderly-fantastic!” (no-one laughs, awkward pause) “Umm, let’s mooo-ve on. Laura, I thought you’d like the Gammelgarden.”
Ingalls-Wilder: “Yeah. Reminds me of home. All of us sleeping in a one-room house… Ma, Pa, The snoring…” * Wipes tear *
Uecker: "Strong family ties are important. I signed with the Milwaukee Braves for $3,000. That bothered my dad at the time because he didn't have that kind of dough. But he eventually scraped it up."
Seth: “Laura, didn’t you ever want to break out of there?”
I-Wilder:” “Once you begin being naughty, it is easier to go and on and on, and sooner or later something dreadful happens.”
J. Love-Hewitt: “I've literally, in my entire life I've had two guys come up to me and ask me out. Other than that I have had to go and try to like spend time with them, or sort of start the conversation, basically like spell it out in a Sharpie, like, you know?”
Uecker: “Sharpie. Yeah. Gotcha.” (Whistles between teeth) “Y’know, If a guy hits .300 every year, what does he have to look forward to? I always tried to stay around .190, with three or four RBI. And I tried to get them all in September. That way I always had something to talk about during the winter."
L-Hewitt: “Bob, you are the only person who can sell you, so you do spend a lot of time in your job by yourself everyday.”
Uecker: (Clears throat) “Yeah. I remember one time I'm batting against the Dodgers in Milwaukee. They lead, 2 - 1, it's the bottom of the ninth, bases loaded, two out and the pitcher has a full count on me. I look over to the Dodger dugout and they're all in street clothes."
(From the grill in the Calf-A kitchen: “Hiyo!!”)
I-Wilder: “It is the sweet, simple things of life which are the real ones after all.”
Uecker: "Yeah. Like the time I got pulled over at 4 a.m. I was fined $75 for being intoxicated and $400 for being with the Phillies."
Seth: “Jennifer, are you from Venus?”
L-Hewitt: “I'm a hopeless romantic. It's disgusting. It really is. I've seen 'While You Were Sleeping', like, twenty times, and I still believe in the whole Prince Charming thing.”
Uecker: “Speaking of Prince Charming, in 1962 I was named Minor League Player of the Year. It was my second season in the Bigs."
Seth: (uses forks on plate to make rim shot, avoids eggs) “Yowzah!”
Uecker: "People don't know this but I helped the Cardinals win the pennant. I came down with hepatitis. The trainer injected me with it."
I-Wilder: “Hello!!”
Uecker: "Career highlights? I had two. I got an intentional walk from Sandy Koufax and I got out of a rundown against the Mets."
L-Hewitt: “Vegas, baby!”
Uecker: "The biggest thrill a ballplayer can have is when your son takes after you. That happened when my Bobby was in his championship Little League game. He really showed me something. Struck out three times. Made an error that lost the game. Parents were throwing things at our car and swearing at us as we drove off. Gosh, I was proud."
E-6
Great stuff, boyo! Worth the wait.

Not sure if Ueker has writers on staff, but none of 'em can match Bo. Is he signed for next year?
Joshs Thoughts
I agree, Seth. Coors Field is the best field in the majors (along with Fenway). And I too will agree with the McNuggets.
And thank you for the props!
