Game 158: Final Santana Day Of The Year
Posted by ubelmann on Wednesday, September 26th, 2007 at 5:00 pm
Johan Santana vs. Jair Jurrjens
Johan's last start left kind of a bad taste in my mouth. Hopefully some fall weather, Comerica's spacious dimensions, and Johan's pitching will conspire to keep the ball in the yard and runs off the board.
There will be no Cy for Santana this year, but I'm still hopeful for a Gold Glove.
Pointless Santana stat of the evening: In his career, Santana has limited opponents to .205/.262/.311 in September and October. For reference, Nick Punto is hitting roughly .212/.293/.273 this season.

lineup
A. Casilla
J. Kubel
J. Mauer
T. Hunter
J. Morneau
M. Cuddyer
R. White dh
L. Rodriguez 3b
N. Punto ss
I've still got faith that the Twins can pull off a playoff birth. LET'S GO TWINS!!!
its early, but better bust this out
Why is Mauer even playing if he's hurt this badly?
johan is pitching I think is the reason
Random, but it's a right-handed pitcher. Why is White in the line-up and not Jones?
Why is Gardenhire the manager and not someone else?
Way to prove me insane, White, by hitting that double with the bases loaded just as I hit submit.
way to go RonDL!
OK, Johan. There's your four runs. Go get 'em.
After the second out in the first, the Tigers' color guy spent about 45 seconds commenting on Bartlett having good range and good skills at ss and the play-by-play guy just sat there silently until the camera zoomed in on Punto at ss and the color guy said "Oh, excuse me, Punto!"
lolhahaha
guess they are mailing it in for the rest of the year
Leadoff walks are bad. Someone needs to tell Johan. Especially with a four-run lead.
good call
I'd like to see a triple play right here. That would be very entertaining.
What is Johan doing? A 3-2 changeup with two on and no outs and a four-run lead?
Johan has gotten several ground balls early on. Let's get another one.
Well this inning could be going better...
Can't believe I'm happy to get out of that inning with the lead. Johan threw his best two changeups of the game to the last batter. Hopefully, he's found his control.
Quick Cleveland update: Luis Rivas!!! has just hit a homerun.
its raining fire somewhere
And its not against the Royals!
Another sign of how meaningless home field advantage really is in the playoffs: Cleveland feels so it is so important that they are okay playing Luis Rivas with home field advantage on the line.
Is my man Asdrubal hurt or summat?
It does seem as though home field isn't as important in baseball as it is in other sports. On the other hand, almost every team in baseball has a better home record than road record this year (I'm not sure if this was a fluky year or if this is a historical trend).
Cleveland and Seattle are playing a doubleheader to make up some snow dates
maybe thats why Rivas is playing
What kind of "catch" did Casilla miss?
And what the hell was that Cuddyer?
I've never seen Santana hang so many changeups in his entire career...and like expected, they end up getting hit hard.
He's given up two hits, one on a bloop. He's allowed 33 homers this year, including three games with at least three allowed. I think he's had worse changeup problems before. To me it was location of both the fastball and changeup, but the changeup was well out of the zone, not hanging in it. Mauer was jumping all over the place reaching for pitches, even ones that weren't hit.
If you look back on those 33 HR's, which are a ton for any pitcher, the majority of them will be as a result of a changeup that was left up in the zone.
You do that, and it's going to get hit hard...and far...which is what has happened to Johan this year.
When I made that statement, I was talking about the entire 2007 season...not just the four innings he's thrown tonight.
oh great
rain delay
Luis Rivas just hit a triple!
Now you're just messing wif us, New Guy. INCONCEiVABLE!
Rivas has added a GB out and a single now as well.
Johan's streak of five-inning starts is in jeopardy if this delay is long but the game resumes.
Any word on the length of the delay?
Detroit radio guys were saying it was gonna be short
Just got home and powered up MLB radio, and first thing I thought of when I heard talking heads discussing stadium, was "uh oh, rain delay."
Gotta get this one in, for Johan's streak, and so that the Tigers can be ubelmannated. Oh, NY is leading, nevermind.
Any word on the delay?
on the Twins Radio network..no word
just got word..about 10 minutes from now...8:05 central timeish
8:05 PM
oh oh
its raining again
and the radio speculation is that the game is going to be cancelled
confusion reigns!
Tarp is back on...
I just want Twins baseball!
I'm following the Cubs & Brewers scenario though.
It figures that no opposing team, only an Act of God, can halt Johan's 5-inning game streak.
asterisk on the streak
wait, hang on -- that's only if the game becomes official. So far, it's not looking like that's happening.
Well, as soon as I say that, the delay is off. Let's play, Twins!
Back in action. Well worth the wait, no doubt.

hey network folks..its break #8 !
Well welcome to the game Mr. Blackburn.
Mauer is also out of the game.
what a pussy.
Like I said.

they started coming out after rain delays soon after the Messersmith decision, Dazz.
*and he finally wandered in that direction*
It's a good thing play has resumed, otherwise this game log would not have been official. All comments would have been deleted as if they never happened.
Of course, if Blackburn can make this inning last infinitely long, the game won't become official either.
Grrrrrrreat.
working on that.

Boy, great effort by Torii.
It's wet out there, SF, I don't think I'd be running all-out in the OF, either.
No, I know...especially when I have dollar signs in my eyes.
Oh, there you go. I'm sure the combination of the two slowed him down.
Blackburn is really struggling. This probably means that he sucks and will never be good. Maybe we can trade him in a package deal with Bartlett and Kubel?
Did Blackburn forget to warm up?
taken care of
Turning into a horror show

Another error by Casilla.
bench him. he can learn by watching.
The wheels came off a long time ago for this ball club.
Two singles with 2 outs, and Rivas gets a final AB to reach the cycle...
popout to 1B.
its comeback time!
it's head for bed time!
g'night, Citzens - it's been a long day
Man, this game is uglier than Sandra Bernhardt.

Well, maybe not...
bwhahah
This game thread is just full of disturbing imagery.
its an official game now
crap
The game was going so well, and I came home from church to this? :shudders:
Last one here, please detonate.

It's official...game is postponed.
Twins lose.
Season in a nutshell...
Twins vs. CLE: 4-14
Twins vs. DET: 6-12
a side note, there needs to be some Rain Delay pics in the Vault
Mike Hargrove...someone sliding in the tarp..something
that's about all I got at the moment.
I love that movie
Kyle Lohse, American Hero.
