Game 158: Final Santana Day Of The Year

Posted by ubelmann on Wednesday, September 26th, 2007 at 5:00 pm

gamelog.JPG Johan Santana vs. Jair Jurrjens

Johan's last start left kind of a bad taste in my mouth. Hopefully some fall weather, Comerica's spacious dimensions, and Johan's pitching will conspire to keep the ball in the yard and runs off the board.

There will be no Cy for Santana this year, but I'm still hopeful for a Gold Glove.

Pointless Santana stat of the evening: In his career, Santana has limited opponents to .205/.262/.311 in September and October. For reference, Nick Punto is hitting roughly .212/.293/.273 this season.

johan is pitching I think is the reason

Random, but it's a right-handed pitcher. Why is White in the line-up and not Jones?

Why is Gardenhire the manager and not someone else?

Way to prove me insane, White, by hitting that double with the bases loaded just as I hit submit.

socaltwinsfan
socaltwinsfan replied on September 26th, 2007 at 6:32 pm

After the second out in the first, the Tigers' color guy spent about 45 seconds commenting on Bartlett having good range and good skills at ss and the play-by-play guy just sat there silently until the camera zoomed in on Punto at ss and the color guy said "Oh, excuse me, Punto!" lol

Leadoff walks are bad. Someone needs to tell Johan. Especially with a four-run lead.

What is Johan doing? A 3-2 changeup with two on and no outs and a four-run lead?

socaltwinsfan
socaltwinsfan replied on September 26th, 2007 at 6:48 pm

Johan has gotten several ground balls early on. Let's get another one.

socaltwinsfan
socaltwinsfan replied on September 26th, 2007 at 6:56 pm

Can't believe I'm happy to get out of that inning with the lead. Johan threw his best two changeups of the game to the last batter. Hopefully, he's found his control.

ubelmann
ubelmann replied on September 26th, 2007 at 7:07 pm

Another sign of how meaningless home field advantage really is in the playoffs: Cleveland feels so it is so important that they are okay playing Luis Rivas with home field advantage on the line.

GreekHouse
GreekHouse replied on September 26th, 2007 at 7:21 pm

It does seem as though home field isn't as important in baseball as it is in other sports. On the other hand, almost every team in baseball has a better home record than road record this year (I'm not sure if this was a fluky year or if this is a historical trend).

davidwatts
davidwatts replied on September 26th, 2007 at 7:25 pm

Cleveland and Seattle are playing a doubleheader to make up some snow dates
maybe thats why Rivas is playing

And what the hell was that Cuddyer?

StatFreak101
StatFreak101 replied on September 26th, 2007 at 7:10 pm

I've never seen Santana hang so many changeups in his entire career...and like expected, they end up getting hit hard.

socaltwinsfan
socaltwinsfan replied on September 26th, 2007 at 7:20 pm

He's given up two hits, one on a bloop. He's allowed 33 homers this year, including three games with at least three allowed. I think he's had worse changeup problems before. To me it was location of both the fastball and changeup, but the changeup was well out of the zone, not hanging in it. Mauer was jumping all over the place reaching for pitches, even ones that weren't hit.

StatFreak101
StatFreak101 replied on September 26th, 2007 at 7:40 pm

If you look back on those 33 HR's, which are a ton for any pitcher, the majority of them will be as a result of a changeup that was left up in the zone.

You do that, and it's going to get hit hard...and far...which is what has happened to Johan this year.

When I made that statement, I was talking about the entire 2007 season...not just the four innings he's thrown tonight.
