Game 159: Twins at Boston

Posted by ubelmann on Thursday, September 27th, 2007 at 5:05 pm

Boof Bonser vs. Josh Beckett

If I had to rank the four AL teams according to how much I don't like them, for whatever reason, I would rank them this way:

1. Red Sox
2. Angels
3. Yankees
4. Indians

I just can't stand the Red Sox anymore, and it would be great if the Twins could sweep the Red Sox while the Yankees win out. It's not going to happen, but it'd be great.

Some splits:

.237/.337/.295 -- Nick Punto, April-May
.166/.245/.223 -- Nick Punto, June-August
.311/.344/.393 -- Nick Punto, September

.289/.373/.450 -- Michael Cuddyer, April-July
.253/.329/.395 -- Michael Cuddyer, August-September

.353/.446/.480 -- Joe Mauer, April-May 4th
.271/.364/.395 -- Joe Mauer, June 8th-Aug 26th
.233/.292/.372 -- Joe Mauer, September

.131/.212/.231 (oppenents' averages), 1.49 ERA -- Pat Neshek, April-July 19th
.288/.368/.513 (oppenents' averages), 6.14 ERA -- Pat Neshek, July 21st-September 16th

[Note: On July 19th, Pat Neshek made his sixth appearance in seven days.]

.165/.230/.291 -- Rondell White

Clearly, what this team needed was more players playing hurt. Hike up those skirts, Sally boys!

I really like that Jones is playing. I'm not a huge fan of his (I like the kid and all, though), but his playing time has been so limited, I'm really fond of seeing him play.

I kinda wish I had accepted and invitation to watch the game tonight, though, rather than sitting at home listening to John and Dan occasionally remember to tell me what's going on.

No Bones, no House, no Bionic Woman? No Heroes, no Smallville? No The War??? What kind of insane freak ARE you????!!!!!!

brianS
brianS replied on September 27th, 2007 at 6:57 pm

btw, I watched Bioinic Woman last night. I'm not afraid to say it.

What's up with these sci-fantasy series? New, secret, uber-technologies and surgical techniques that allow an accident victim to recover from a multiple amputation/prosthesis implant in a matter of hours? And, uh, these technologies are so super-secret that they haven't been commercialized? Puh-leeeeeeeeeeeeeeze. Doctor Lovestruck woulda had a fat wad of grant money and venture capitalists peeing all over themselves to fund his work. Where are the low-power prototypes? A civilian who has just been in a catastrophic accident and should be hospitalized himself can order around the staff of the super-secret lab and perform what surely had to be many hours of surgery within minutes of his accident?

of course, it won't stop me from watching. When does the good bionic chick get her hands on the Witchblade???

of course, Michelle Ryan appears to be selling a sluttier image. So she's got that going for her. Which is nice.

If Beckett wins the Cy Young, does he become honorary Vice President of Red Sox Nation?

I think the whole Red Sox Nation thing is why they have passed the Yankees as #1 on my most-disliked list.

Andrew
Andrew replied on September 27th, 2007 at 6:09 pm

Between the Sox and the Patriots, I'd be OK if England re-colonized that whole area.

At least the Sports Guy has managed to get through Thursday without writing a Red Sox/Patriots column...or maybe I've just been too busy at work.

I have to agree with Ubes here...

My hatred, or dislike if you want to keep it to a low tone, is much more for the Red Sox than it is for the Yankees...but I don't think I could list the Indians, or any other AL Central team as the team that I liked the most.

Honestly, I prefer the Angels out of all the four AL postseason teams in 2007...and it's mostly by default.

StatFreak101
StatFreak101 replied on September 27th, 2007 at 7:04 pm

So let's play a game...

If the Twins were to trade one of their many pitching prospects, major league ready or not, who would YOU have them trade and what kind of return would you see the Twins getting on that respective pitcher(s)?

Somebody's not on the right page. After Silva pitched the other night, Gardy went on and on about how LeCroy called such a good game. Tonight, all Dazzle can talk about is how, in effect, Bonser is having to try to succeed despite LeCroy's pitch-calling. Which is it?

ubelmann
ubelmann replied on September 27th, 2007 at 7:39 pm

I believe the answer is "when in doubt, the new guy must be responsible." In this case, LeCroy is kind of an old new guy, but my point remains. Team fails to hit in August? Must be Casilla's fault, since all we changed was going from Castillo to Casilla. Team struggling with Mauer behind the plate? Boy do we miss Henry Blanco.

Jeff A
Jeff A replied on September 27th, 2007 at 7:38 pm

If Philadelphia makes the playoffs, they're the team I'm going to root for, just for the sake of ex-Twin Charlie Manuel.

ubelmann
ubelmann replied on September 27th, 2007 at 7:41 pm

What hooks me into the Indians is that I feel they've done a good job constructing their team, and I can hope that if Sabathia+Carmona+Sizemore+Hafner=WS that Santana+Liriano+Mauer+Morneau=WS.

Jeff A
Jeff A replied on September 27th, 2007 at 7:39 pm

Has there been any thought at all given to starting Johan on Sunday to try to get him the strikeout leadership? He only pitched three innings last night, so it's not like it would be that hard for him to go on three days' rest. I'm not saying they have to do that, but I'm just wondering if there's been any talk of it anywhere.
