2007 NLDS Game 3: PHI at COL

That Phillies logo was used by the club from 1950-69 and I happen to think it's pretty cool. I'm not sure what the circle is supposed to represent -- the ball is in orbit? -- but I love the hat there. I am not enamored of the Colorado logos and I recall that the interlocking CR hat was popular among Crips gang members. Nice.

As you may recall, the Phillies became the first team in major league history to lose 10,000 games earlier this season. That, in and of itself, doesn't mean a whole lot -- they've been playing since 1883, and teams that play that long are going to lose a lot of games. However, the Phillies really are a sad sack organization. Think of it -- the National League was just 8 teams until expansion in 1961, so one would expect a pennant every ten years or so, but the Phillies won the NL pennant in 1915 and then not again until 1950. Ugh. Of course, they had the disastrous collapse in 1964 -- up by 6.5 games with 12 to play, they reeled off ten straight losses and in those ten games and were caught by two teams, St. Louis and Cincinnati. Perhaps the stars on that logo represented the dazed feeling of Phillies fans as the dream crashed and burned.

That 1964 season was the only season that the Phillies finished higher than fourth between 1950 and 1973. Of course, as a kid, I remember the Mike Schmidt years when the Phillies seemed to win every year (they won the NL East six times in eight years between 1976 and 1983). Their 1980 World Series Championship is the only one in franchise history.

It'd be pretty easy to feel sorry for the Phillies fans -- but let's not get too sentimental. For all their misery, they did have the great Mike Schmidt and he was booed in his home ballpark. That's like booing Kirby Puckett. Of course, Phillies fans will boo anybody, so if 2007 ends in disappointment, that's okay by me, too.

I was hoping that Chris Coste would get an at bat in the World Series, but at least he got an at bat in the playoffs.

The Rockies send Ubaldo Jimenez out against Jamie Moyer. Moyer has fashioned a pretty darned good career for himself. He's made over $60 million over his 20 year career. That's pretty stunning when you think about it. Now 44, he's still at least serviceable, although I can't believe he's got a whole lot left. It could be the end tonight for him. Meanwhile, Jimenez, 23, is another young guy that the Rockies have that signals that maybe this team has finally found some pitching (a good humidor doesn't hurt, either).

You forgot to mention Joe Morgan's role in the '64 Phillies' collapse.

Damn, I forgot that!

I can honestly say I've never heard of Ubaldo Jimenez. That's not to say he can't be good, but he sure hasn't had much publicity.

The Colorado announcers are talking about the bug game last night. According to one of them, midges are actually attracted to bug spray, so that spraying themselves down was the worst thing the players could have done. I have no idea if he knows what he's talking about, but part of me wants it to be true.

Looked bigger than midges. Like black flies.

As soon as I left, the power went out. Coincidence? I think not.

A computer glitch caused the lights to go out -- 14 minute delay.

Er, not. Gamecast slower than Lecroy running from first to third. Howard leads off.

My SethTeam is going to take a huge hit without the Phillies. Granted, they haven't produced yet, but if they aren't even in the next round there's no chance of them picking it up.

Utley, Howard, and Rollins combined for 5 hits. That's it from the Phillies 3 most important hitters. Not even 2 hits per game.

It's a pity there's no game four. The world is now deprived of the epic Kyle Lohse-Mark Redman matchup.

According to ESPN.COM, that game four will be played tonight, but Josh Fogg is starting it.

And just as I link to it, they've removed it from the schedule.
