2007 NLCS Game 4: AZD at COL
October 15th, 2007 by SBG
This has certainly been a disappointing series so far. Before the series started, we heard a lot about how there were no big market teams in this one and how that would kill TV ratings. I don't believe that has to be the case and I really hoped that this would be a series that expanded baseball's audience by gripping fans with a scintillating series. Alas, Colorado has been way better than Arizona. It could be over tonight and I guess given the way things have gone, I'd be okay with that.

Over the last three games I've been chatting with a good friend from my old unit who moved back to Denver after he got out. The series might be a bit short on drama for fans who really don't have a stake in it, but I get the feeling that this couldn't have come too soon for fans in Colorado.
CarterHayes replied on October 15, 2007 at 9:21:00 pm
50 degrees tonight, with the wind chill at 47.
brianS replied on October 15, 2007 at 10:02:06 pm
so, a warming trend in Denver?
CarterHayes replied on October 15, 2007 at 11:32:48 pm
Al Gore must be in town.
CarterHayes replied on October 15, 2007 at 9:23:08 pm
The bunting is getting started early tonight.
CarterHayes replied on October 15, 2007 at 9:29:05 pm
Wow, Young got busted bad there.
CarterHayes replied on October 15, 2007 at 9:31:24 pm
Morales' delivery has the same weird hesitation as Doug Davis', and yet the kid throws in the mid-to-upper nineties. I'd hate to be that kid's arm.
CarterHayes replied on October 15, 2007 at 9:31:55 pm
2-1-3 inning.
CarterHayes replied on October 15, 2007 at 9:37:24 pm
Cirillo gets the start at second tonight? Hoo boy.
CarterHayes replied on October 15, 2007 at 9:39:00 pm
Tony G. says the ball is carrying well tonight. Both Young and Holliday had to make course corrections in the outfield - Holliday nearly didn't adjust in time to make the catch on Drew's fly to left.
CarterHayes replied on October 15, 2007 at 9:40:52 pm
Good piece of hitting by Holliday on that pitch; he could have easily gotten jammed on that.
CarterHayes replied on October 15, 2007 at 9:43:07 pm
As much as I like the COLORADO wordmark and the interlocking CR, I can't stand the Rockies' batting helmets. Much like the Mets', these new models just are abominations, particularly in the metallic-looking paint that changes color under light.
brianS replied on October 15, 2007 at 9:58:54 pm
mebbe if they smeared some of Manny's hash on 'em??
AMR replied on October 15, 2007 at 11:33:53 pm
I don't like the Colorado wordmark as it is on the jerseys. The middle O overlaps the lapel, so you get something that looks like "COLOORADO" or "COLCORADO."
Of course, the "Arizzona" "D<>biacks" have the same problem.
I've noticed that the Indians' road uniforms fix this problem by stretching the ligature between the first e and the v over the lapel.
Also, with the hats, I wish the lower tail of the C would run into the crossbar of the R.
But I wonder if that's how they did it, I'd consider it too cutesy.
brianS replied on October 15, 2007 at 11:46:01 pm
it's this sort of sartorial analysis that makes the WGOM special.
AMR: Paul Lukas's alternate road uniwatch.
AMR replied on October 15, 2007 at 11:53:23 pm
I only know because Lukas pointed it out (with the new D.Backs unis).
CarterHayes replied on October 15, 2007 at 9:45:02 pm
24 pitches for Owings to get out of that inning. Wish I'd kept count of Morales' - it seemed like he had about as many.
brianS replied on October 15, 2007 at 9:53:11 pm
Cirillo in the lineup tonight. Whassup with that?
CarterHayes replied on October 15, 2007 at 9:54:01 pm
Maybe with Owings in the lineup they feel like they needed to still have an easy out?
brianS replied on October 15, 2007 at 9:54:48 pm
+250 pts of OPS. LOL.
CarterHayes replied on October 15, 2007 at 9:58:38 pm
You know, I was thinking about that article on the Hardball Times - the one about the advantage of hitting the pitcher 8th. Cirillo's in the eighth spot tonight, so that should actually be the optimal place for him in that lineup.
CarterHayes replied on October 15, 2007 at 9:53:29 pm
Those outfield umps seem positioned too close to the infield.
brianS replied on October 15, 2007 at 9:54:01 pm
Morales up to 26 pitches now (after the Snyder double)
CarterHayes replied on October 15, 2007 at 9:55:00 pm

tip o' the cap to ye, CH. Young's Oatmeal Stout tonight. Mmmmm.
CarterHayes replied on October 15, 2007 at 10:04:59 pm
We're on a bit of a budget watch around here lately, so it's Leinie's Oktoberfest for me. Sadly, I haven't been doing much beer drinking now that the FMH has moved up to Madison.
brianS replied on October 15, 2007 at 10:17:33 pm
the FMH?
Leinie makes some fine products
CarterHayes replied on October 15, 2007 at 10:19:40 pm
The Future Mrs. Hayes. She's not putting the kibosh on drinking or anything like that. I just do less of it when she's around for some reason.

CarterHayes replied on October 15, 2007 at 10:49:07 pm
Definitely something like that. She's a great gal - pretty indulgent of my playoffs-watching. Tip of the cap to her for that.

Oatmeal Squares -- another couple o' fine cereals
brianS replied on October 15, 2007 at 10:19:16 pm
they don't last long in our house.
damn stores don't carry the larger sized box anymore. Just the smaller, more expensive one. I hate how companies screw with consumers, changing container sizes, etc.
Rhubarb_Runner replied on October 15, 2007 at 10:56:31 pm
I agree. When they go on deep discount at the grocery store, we load up.
CarterHayes replied on October 15, 2007 at 10:20:34 pm
There are very, very few cereals I'll eat, and Quaker Oat Squares are one of them. They're good enough to eat dry, with nothing on them.
brianS replied on October 15, 2007 at 10:42:45 pm
yup. I think they mix a little crack in.
AMR replied on October 15, 2007 at 11:36:35 pm
I get a box of them at the downtown Target sometimes over my lunch hour. They box typically lasts less than 24 hours. It makes me feel like such a horse.

My head was bobbin'. That's a great riff.
brianS replied on October 15, 2007 at 10:06:33 pm
Much better inning for Owings.
CarterHayes replied on October 15, 2007 at 10:09:40 pm
Wow. Even though they didn't get Owings, that was a simply amazing play by Tulo.
CarterHayes replied on October 15, 2007 at 10:10:08 pm
And then one of the friggin' TBS announcers invokes the name of Captain Dreamboat.

Jeterwitski?
CarterHayes replied on October 15, 2007 at 10:12:26 pm
The same. Jeter couldn't have gotten to that ball Owings hit if he'd had a week's head start.
CarterHayes replied on October 15, 2007 at 10:10:42 pm
Damn, that kid is a great defender.
CarterHayes replied on October 15, 2007 at 10:16:44 pm
49 pitches for Morales so far.
CarterHayes replied on October 15, 2007 at 10:27:50 pm
That was an ugly K there.
CarterHayes replied on October 15, 2007 at 10:29:21 pm
I hope this isn't going to result in the benches being warned. Both of those HBP were clearly accidents.
CarterHayes replied on October 15, 2007 at 10:36:06 pm
That crowd is really something else.
CarterHayes replied on October 15, 2007 at 10:37:50 pm
Well, with the pitcher retired, maybe Owings can get the run in.
CarterHayes replied on October 15, 2007 at 10:39:04 pm
Owings had two 4-hit games this year?!
CarterHayes replied on October 15, 2007 at 10:40:18 pm

brianS replied on October 15, 2007 at 10:40:24 pm
Whitey Owings.

brianS replied on October 15, 2007 at 10:39:59 pm
Morales note exactly challenging Owings here.
brianS replied on October 15, 2007 at 10:41:07 pm
damn.
brianS replied on October 15, 2007 at 10:49:04 pm
hard to believe that Owings can be so effective throwing as soft as he does.
well, not soft. He's not Jamie Moyer. But he's got a good high school fastball. Dude must really be pitching.
CarterHayes replied on October 15, 2007 at 10:50:17 pm
After watching Braun in the last couple months of the season, and watching Tulo in the playoffs, I've changed my mind. Tulo deserves the Henry Aaron Award more.
brianS replied on October 15, 2007 at 10:51:15 pm
almost all of the pitches to Tulo have been over in the left-handed batters' box.
brianS replied on October 15, 2007 at 10:52:56 pm
Owings with the acrobatics.
GreekHouse replied on October 15, 2007 at 10:54:03 pm
Owings with a bellyflop onto the grass. That'll knock the wind out of you.
CarterHayes replied on October 15, 2007 at 10:54:52 pm
Rockies pinch-hitting for Morales - Seth Smith at bat, and Matt Herges to come in next inning.
brianS replied on October 15, 2007 at 10:54:58 pm
Wow. Bottom of 4 and two outs, and Hurdle goes to the pinch hitter?
CarterHayes replied on October 15, 2007 at 10:56:24 pm
It's fair!
GreekHouse replied on October 15, 2007 at 10:57:06 pm

CJ: "I suck"
JC: "Yep. Your sh!t stinks right now. Get used to it. There's a lot of towns in the Majors. Play your cards right, and you can suck in a whole bunch of 'em before your done. Just look at me!"
CarterHayes replied on October 15, 2007 at 11:14:02 pm
To be fair, Cirillo will always have 1995-1999. And I wouldn't look a gift Conor in the mouth right now.
brianS replied on October 15, 2007 at 11:18:35 pm
yea, Cirillo's had a nice career. I'd go so far as to consider giving my left nut to have such a career in the majors. I probably wouldn't give my left nut, but I'd have to think a minute or two.
CarterHayes replied on October 15, 2007 at 11:23:33 pm
I'd give my left nut for Cirillo's career, I think. I mean, why not? John Kruk gave his for Stan Spence's.

Snakes radio guys are chatting about season awards now. PBP guy is talking up Matt Holliday, but put some props in for Russell Martin this year, and for Joe Mauer last year.
something along the lines of how stud catchers deserve a little more notice than they've been getting lately.
CarterHayes replied on October 15, 2007 at 11:30:29 pm
The Dodgers should probably move Martin to third so he avoids injury...

Nate Tubbs Rules replied on October 15, 2007 at 11:51:58 pm
That Dane Cook commercial seemed mistimed. I don't think anybody fears AZ, and I'm not really impressed with this Dback team and frankly have no idea how they had the best record in the NL this year. Last night's game featured only 3 starters with an OPS+ of over 90, and even those 3 were 103, 103, 109. Nothing special. And their starting pitcher had an ERA+ of 95. Brandon Webb is spectacular and they obviously have some young players but I wouldn't trade franchises with them with the one we have here in the Twin Cities. No way.
Now this Rockies team is another story. Just a great lineup and a nice young staff. 21 wins in 22 games (and going into the WS) is pretty damn impressive
CarterHayes replied on October 15, 2007 at 11:52:22 pm
Have all three balls made contact with the plate when hit this inning?
brianS replied on October 15, 2007 at 11:53:58 pm
watching on radio, so I don't know. Not mentioned by the Rox guys.
CarterHayes replied on October 15, 2007 at 11:55:24 pm
I didn't see the third one in question well enough to be sure, but it looked like the ball Young hit got part of the plate as well.
brianS replied on October 15, 2007 at 11:53:17 pm
Jackson would be the tying run, should he come to the plate this inning. Just sayin'.
AMR replied on October 15, 2007 at 11:56:36 pm
I'm starting to wonder if the Rox will lose any games in 2008. Is 140 wins possible? Is there an invisible Christopher Lloyd making sure that just about every play goes the Rox way?
ubelmann replied on October 15, 2007 at 11:58:50 pm
Never rule out an invisible Christopher Lloyd.
