Suck it, Red Sox! I hope the woman singing the National Anthem leaves Josh Beckett's old clothes for him on the mound.

SBG replied on October 18, 2007 at 6:53:11 pm

And she should be wearing an Indians jersey!

GreekHouse replied on October 18, 2007 at 7:07:40 pm

Matt Holliday has a pointy head.

Jeff A replied on October 18, 2007 at 7:26:19 pm

The solo homers continue for Boston.

Jeff A replied on October 18, 2007 at 7:30:11 pm

Cleveland announcers indicate Lofton misplayed that one. He's obviously not as inspired now that he's not playing against his old team.

Jeff A replied on October 18, 2007 at 7:31:31 pm

Cleveland announcers sound as if Ramirez slowed up on the way to the plate.

GreekHouse replied on October 18, 2007 at 7:31:47 pm

Manny was so close to scoring on that one.

twayn replied on October 18, 2007 at 7:32:37 pm

Close like a light year.

GreekHouse replied on October 18, 2007 at 7:36:11 pm

Also, Sabathia looks like crap. Methinks he might be a bit burned out.

twayn replied on October 18, 2007 at 7:38:01 pm

He's been quite mediocre during the postseason. Very disappointing. Thank goodness for Fausto and Byrd.

GreekHouse replied on October 18, 2007 at 7:42:01 pm

I'll be glad he's in the rotation when they play the Rockies. :)

SBG replied on October 18, 2007 at 7:49:08 pm

The very thing that'll probably win him the Cy Young award (all those innings) is likely the cause of his faltering here.

Jeff A replied on October 18, 2007 at 7:39:10 pm

Yeah, I wondered about that after his first game this series. He hasn't had a good start in the entire postseason. I'm not sure what Cleveland can do about that---it's pretty hard to take the guy who's been your ace all year out of the rotation during the playoffs---but it's a problem for them.

twayn replied on October 18, 2007 at 7:40:04 pm

Cleveland, scoring runs the Twins way.

Jeff A replied on October 18, 2007 at 7:40:32 pm

My thought exactly.

brianS replied on October 18, 2007 at 7:56:18 pm

on the other hand, the bottom of the Red Sawks order looks an awful lot like the bottom of the Twins' order.

ubelmann replied on October 18, 2007 at 9:39:50 pm

Let me know when they insert someone in the lineup with one career HR.

twayn replied on October 18, 2007 at 7:42:11 pm

It's funny because it's true. And it's sad because it's true.

twayn replied on October 18, 2007 at 7:44:00 pm

So where are all the grownups tonight? No SBG, no ubelmann, no bS. Priorities seem to be in disarray.

Jeff A replied on October 18, 2007 at 7:47:18 pm

They're waiting to come through in the clutch.

ubelmann replied on October 18, 2007 at 7:50:19 pm

I'm just about ready to head home and watch the game. Hopefully C.C. doesn't explode before I get there.

Jeff A replied on October 18, 2007 at 7:51:34 pm

I hope not, too. There'd be cheese everywhere!

Did somebody say something? I had this funny buzzing sound in my ear. Like that Star Trek: TOS episode with the planet livin' on super-speedy time, mebbe??

Rhubarb_Runner replied on October 18, 2007 at 9:11:56 pm

Did you know that was originally done on a Wild, Wild West episode?

brianS replied on October 18, 2007 at 7:48:30 pm

You know, that Kielty fella might look good in a Twins uniform.

Jeff A replied on October 18, 2007 at 7:50:12 pm

He certainly batted like a Twin that time.

twayn replied on October 18, 2007 at 7:52:13 pm

Something about the green and gold of Oakland's uni's made him look too much like a leipreachán, though.

brianS replied on October 18, 2007 at 7:49:18 pm

tough call against Heat Miser there.

Jeff A replied on October 18, 2007 at 7:50:58 pm

I wish they'd get back to some of the early starting times they had during the Division Series.

brianS replied on October 18, 2007 at 7:51:44 pm

Cap'n Gritty. Did he play college football?

SBG replied on October 18, 2007 at 8:04:12 pm

Darin Erstad, the only gritty punter in the history of football.

CC's starting to look a bit better. Hope he settles into a groove and puts it on cruise control.

brianS replied on October 18, 2007 at 7:58:20 pm

do you suppose Cruise Control Sabathia has a brother Remote Control?

SBG replied on October 18, 2007 at 8:03:17 pm

Outof Control was the black sheep.

twayn replied on October 18, 2007 at 8:10:34 pm

Off topic, but anybody else think the Gophers ought to be worried about Saturday's game?

E-6 replied on October 18, 2007 at 8:13:12 pm

What's the line?

twayn replied on October 18, 2007 at 8:16:42 pm

Haven't seen one yet. But I'd make NDSU at least a TD favorite.

twayn replied on October 18, 2007 at 8:19:11 pm

According to Covers.com, no line is available.

SBG replied on October 18, 2007 at 8:23:21 pm

That's because the two teams aren't in the same division.

E-6 replied on October 18, 2007 at 8:19:25 pm

I predict the Gopher receivers will have a big game. And the home team will lose by 7.

ubelmann replied on October 18, 2007 at 8:36:08 pm

The Sagarin rankings (with consideration of the point spread) have NDSU as a 5-point favorite. Seems about right.

ubelmann replied on October 18, 2007 at 8:47:38 pm

Massey Ratings have NDSU ranked 65th and Minnesota ranked 122nd, but no point spread is given, as Massey is kind of a pansy that way.

ubelmann replied on October 18, 2007 at 9:00:24 pm

The Wolfe Ratings also give NDSU the edge over Minnesota, with a 56% chance for NDSU to win. (Not sure how that translates to a point spread, but you could probably figure out some sort of translation.)

Very worried.

brianS replied on October 18, 2007 at 8:21:43 pm

Manny being Manny.

E-6 replied on October 18, 2007 at 8:22:58 pm

What's with the yellow line? Can't they just have a fence?

brianS replied on October 18, 2007 at 8:24:46 pm

Or a proper baggie

E-6 replied on October 18, 2007 at 8:28:06 pm

touché

Andrew replied on October 18, 2007 at 8:32:43 pm

Right. If there wasn't that black thing extending parallel to the ground off the backside of the wall, the ball would either disappear or stay in play. No confusion.

E-6 replied on October 18, 2007 at 8:34:26 pm

yeah.

brianS replied on October 18, 2007 at 8:23:52 pm

Francona is getting his money's worth.

SBG replied on October 18, 2007 at 8:24:12 pm

Gameday stuck. Was that a home run, and if so, was there showboating?

brianS replied on October 18, 2007 at 8:25:35 pm

Probably no, and not really (although he didn't run)

twayn replied on October 18, 2007 at 8:28:02 pm

Replays are inconclusive. It looks like it bounced off the yellow line back onto the field. I watched the fans reacting to the ball, and none of them looked like they were trying to catch it. Also, in a slow motion magnified view the balls trajectory appeared to be a straight ricochet, the ball bouncing straight back the way it came down, like dribbling a basketball. And yes, Manny was showboating all the way to first base. And Ortiz scored from first.

twayn replied on October 18, 2007 at 8:28:49 pm

Okay, when I say showboating, I mean loafing.

SBG replied on October 18, 2007 at 8:29:17 pm

Saweet. A single off the top of the wall that scores Ortiz from first.

Andrew replied on October 18, 2007 at 8:34:20 pm

Yeah, I couldn't believe Ortiz made it from first.

E-6 replied on October 18, 2007 at 8:26:46 pm

Fox crew taking the lash to Manny. Not that he doesn't deserve it, but I'm not a fan of the torturers.

ubelmann replied on October 18, 2007 at 8:39:50 pm

Manny's a weird dude. I think everything makes a lot more sense if you assume that what Manny really cares about is hitting. At hitting, he is a master craftsman, and I love to watch him work. At everything else...not so much.

Andrew replied on October 18, 2007 at 8:49:36 pm

I've tried to model my brother's swing on Manny's. He is one of the best hitters in terms of swing structure I've ever seen.

As for my swing, we're far, far too gone for me.

E-6 replied on October 18, 2007 at 9:00:43 pm

A well-written, in-depth piece on Manny from The New Yorker (04/23/07.)

Andrew replied on October 18, 2007 at 9:12:58 pm

7 pages? I'll read it tomorrow when I've got nothing better to do.

freealonzo replied on October 18, 2007 at 8:34:11 pm

Beckett's in the groove. Injuns are kicking themselves for not taking advantage of Becket's 1st inning jitters

New Britain Bo replied on October 18, 2007 at 8:35:26 pm

I think this will be a good'n.

New Britain Bo replied on October 18, 2007 at 8:39:24 pm

Crisp due, here.

ubelmann replied on October 18, 2007 at 8:41:52 pm

Crisp really Punto'd that bunt attempt.

freealonzo replied on October 18, 2007 at 8:49:18 pm

Beat me 37 seconds!

Andrew replied on October 18, 2007 at 8:42:13 pm

McCarver makes a decent point about pitching to a bunter and then shuts up. A miracle has occured my friends.

SBG replied on October 18, 2007 at 9:50:21 pm

+1 transformation.

New Britain Bo replied on October 18, 2007 at 8:42:18 pm

K-risp.

freealonzo replied on October 18, 2007 at 8:42:29 pm

Crisp was Puntoesque in getting that bunt down.

ubelmann replied on October 18, 2007 at 8:42:59 pm

Attaboy, C.C.

Andrew replied on October 18, 2007 at 8:47:52 pm

Did anyone else catch Joe Buck on Conan last night? I actually enjoyed the segment.

Jub-Jub.

E-6 replied on October 18, 2007 at 8:52:13 pm

Please tell me Conan gave him some sh!t.

Andrew replied on October 18, 2007 at 8:55:15 pm

They were pretty buddy-buddy. Buck did not come off as an arrogant prick like he does on his broadcasts. Here's the YouTube of the segment.

Andrew replied on October 18, 2007 at 8:57:31 pm

Geeze, Big Papi is tearing up the basepaths tonight.

ubelmann replied on October 18, 2007 at 9:03:36 pm

This is tough for me. I want the Sox to lose, but I want Kielty to hit well. Why did you have to load the bases for him, C.C.?

New Guy replied on October 18, 2007 at 9:05:01 pm

So the entire Nation is rooting for Cleveland in this series? Am I the only one that dislikes the Indians more than I dislike the Red Sox?

E-6 replied on October 18, 2007 at 9:07:41 pm

Not so much the team as their fans. Red Sox=Grateful Dead.

Andrew replied on October 18, 2007 at 9:08:59 pm

Agreed. Between the Red Sox and Patriots (and to a lesser extent the Celtics and Revs) I cannot stand anyone who roots for a New England-based team. Hence the love for Cleveland.

New Guy replied on October 18, 2007 at 9:13:34 pm

I dunno... the Indians fans don't seem all that admirable either:

http://ladiesdotdotdot.wordpress.com/2007/10/17/down-out-douchebagged-in-cleveland-the-whole-story/

http://deadspin.com/sports/mascots/wait-its-acceptable-to-wear-redface-311872.php

Plus, there's the fact that C.C. Sabathia is a jerk and I know and hate a relative of Casey Blake. For me, the Indians are the new White Sox.

Andrew replied on October 18, 2007 at 9:14:45 pm

I'm not necessarily saying I like the Indians, just that my hatred for the Red Sox Nation burns with the fire of a thousand suns.

E-6 replied on October 18, 2007 at 9:17:18 pm

You got your reasons.

I got mine.

Andrew replied on October 18, 2007 at 9:19:04 pm

Two of my least favorite "actors" on the planet. I hope the guy who green-lighted that at the studio got canned. The sad thing is that "Fever Pitch" was actually a decent book.

ubelmann replied on October 18, 2007 at 9:19:54 pm

One of my roommates is an annoying Red Sox fan. Sure, she's from Boston, and her family has season tickets, so she's not a bandwagoner, but she doesn't know sh!t about the team (during Manny's recent at-bat it was revealed that she didn't know Manny played for Cleveland before Boston) and constantly talks about how hard it was to root for the Red Sox because of "the curse." Let. It. Go. Already.

Andrew replied on October 18, 2007 at 9:21:20 pm

Alright, girl roommate!

Edit: There. I used a link tag instead of an image tag.

(Comments wont nest below this level)
ubelmann replied on October 18, 2007 at 9:25:07 pm

It's really not that exciting.

Andrew replied on October 18, 2007 at 9:28:52 pm

It was a line in a Friends episode. For some reason, I think it was the gameshow episode, Rachel is going to live with Joey where he utters the above line.

ubelmann replied on October 18, 2007 at 9:29:46 pm

I remember that show. It was kind of funny how "Joey" moved to the West Coast the same time that I did, plus there was a physics student character on the show.

ubelmann replied on October 18, 2007 at 9:31:20 pm

Huh, for whatever reason that picture looks like an episode of Joey rather than Friends to me, but I'm hardly an expert.

Andrew replied on October 18, 2007 at 9:35:14 pm

I think it is too. Matt LeBlanc looks too old for it to be from Friends. I just put "Joey Tribbiani" into Google Image Search and took one of the first ones.

Andrew replied on October 18, 2007 at 9:41:29 pm

Dang it. According to this transcript it was Chandler who said "Cool, girl roommate". I was right about the episode though ("The One with Phoebe's Embryo's. Season 4, Episode 12). It is one of my favorites. I think I'll watch it. You can watch it here. Scroll down to Season 4.

freealonzo replied on October 18, 2007 at 9:08:14 pm

Didn't you get the memo? The Red Sox are the new Yankees.

ubelmann replied on October 18, 2007 at 9:11:33 pm

Whoa. What's up with that?

ubelmann replied on October 18, 2007 at 9:13:45 pm

I don't get it. Any theories on the apparent Lofton/Beckett beef?

Andrew replied on October 18, 2007 at 9:17:20 pm

I think Beckett took exception to Lofton thinking he got walked on the previous pitch and said something about it to him as he was running out the pop-up. I assume it was something along the lines of "Ha, I have proven myself superior" only a bit less eloquent. I caught Lofton saying "What'd you say?" I think. Based on that, I wrote other part in my imagination.

ubelmann replied on October 18, 2007 at 9:22:16 pm

That seems like it's probably right. The HP ump immediately faced/talked to Beckett when he was out to break up the whole thing, so it seems like Beckett was probably the instigator. Lofton didn't do anything that you don't see in 1,000 games each year, though. Maybe he's just irritable because he misses his ex-girlfriend.

ubelmann replied on October 18, 2007 at 9:25:52 pm

Sounds like you nailed it.

Andrew replied on October 18, 2007 at 9:30:20 pm

Having been in my fair share of dustups - on the diamond, pitch, court, gridiron, mat, and just about any other surface you can play a sport on - you get to have a 6th sense about these things.

freealonzo replied on October 18, 2007 at 9:20:51 pm

O.k. is just me or does anyone else find it irratating that FOX has to have the pitch speed come pop up in a fiery blaze?

ubelmann replied on October 18, 2007 at 9:23:18 pm

That's sort of annoying, but in my list of grievances against FOX, that probably doesn't crack the top 50.

Andrew replied on October 18, 2007 at 9:31:39 pm

Number one for me is those damn football robots.

1a. The robot turkey at Thanksgiving.

ubelmann replied on October 18, 2007 at 9:34:28 pm

Isn't it ridiculous that we can remember stuff like that about the broadcasts? Their marketing people probably consider that some kind of success, but that turkey robot does irritate the hell out of me.
