2007 World Series Game 1: COL at BOS

Rockiesat.jpgRed Sox

I think this is a pretty interesting matchup and I'm hoping for a good series that draws some fans back into watching baseball.

Boston, of course, is the big money, old school, East Coast franchise that represents all that baseball has hung its hat on for the last several years. They have a recent WS title and have a lineup and pitching staff in place to win big. Josh Beckett has been an animal all year long, and if you believe in clutch pitching, he's been tremendous in this and previous post seasons. Curt Schilling is a war horse and even though I can't stand him, he's been pretty darned effective for a long time. Dice-K has been somewhat of a disappointment, I suppose, given all the money the Red Sox spent to acquire him, but he's still a pretty darned good third option.

The lineup has two huge monsters right in the middle in Manny "What, Me Worry" Ramirez and David "Your Girlfriend is Very Nice" Ortiz. There are other good pieces in this lineup, too: Lowell, CapTek, Pedroia, et al. I think this team is loaded for bear and is the best team in all of baseball.

The Rockies have some great young pitching, a stud at shortstop in Tulowitski, an MVP candidate in Holliday, and an old stud in Helton (did you know he played college football?). I don't think that they are quite as good as Boston, and some of my reading indicates that I'm far from alone in my feelings there. However, they, as you know, come into this World Series on an incredible roll. They say that momentum is all about tomorrow's starting pitcher, but is that absolutely true when you've won 21 of 22, with 20 of those wins coming against teams with winning records?

It's hard to predict who's going to win this series. I suppose you can line up the two teams and do a bunch of analysis, but really, what's the point? I think it's pretty simple. You have the best team in baseball playing the hottest team in baseball. It's the irresistible force against the immovable object. I am hoping like Hell that the Rockies can win this thing, but if you placed a gun to my head, I think I'm going with the better team. Red Sox in six. Then again, I've picked exactly 50% of the series right so far. Furthermore, I've picked the Red Sox and Rockies right once each. Did I tell you I think this post season stuff is a crapshoot? Maybe it's more like a coin flip.

Without a true rooting interest in this series (other than my antipathy for the New Englanders), I saw that the game's the thing. Bring on the 2007 World Series. Pass the peanuts and crackerjack.

Hopefully Schilling doesn't read the line about not liking him. I'd hate for him to have the opportunity to rub it in when he's got Boggs-Baylor-Rice due up and Evans in the hole against Ron Davis in a save situation.

I just watched Wired Science on PBS for an hour (7-8) and it was very interesting and informative. Then I switch over to FOX and it's still the bottom of the 1st. I, for once, am happy that FOX takes 3-4 years of pregame.

I don't know what to make of the Wakefield injury thing. I understand the guy is hoping to return next year, but it's the World Series. He might not ever make it this far again.

"Based on the information I'm getting from the doctors, I'm seriously at risk of injuring myself for the rest of my life," said Wakefield, who described the injury as inflammation in the back of his right shoulder. "So that had a lot of weight in the decision."

I read that, and all I can think about is Brad Radke last year, throwing with two injuries that could be with him for the rest of his life, and how sad it was that the Twins couldn't make it to the Series for him. Brad would have been there to take the mound twice.
