2007 World Series Game 1: COL at BOS
Posted by SBG on Wednesday, October 24th, 2007 at 6:00 pm

I think this is a pretty interesting matchup and I'm hoping for a good series that draws some fans back into watching baseball.
Boston, of course, is the big money, old school, East Coast franchise that represents all that baseball has hung its hat on for the last several years. They have a recent WS title and have a lineup and pitching staff in place to win big. Josh Beckett has been an animal all year long, and if you believe in clutch pitching, he's been tremendous in this and previous post seasons. Curt Schilling is a war horse and even though I can't stand him, he's been pretty darned effective for a long time. Dice-K has been somewhat of a disappointment, I suppose, given all the money the Red Sox spent to acquire him, but he's still a pretty darned good third option.
The lineup has two huge monsters right in the middle in Manny "What, Me Worry" Ramirez and David "Your Girlfriend is Very Nice" Ortiz. There are other good pieces in this lineup, too: Lowell, CapTek, Pedroia, et al. I think this team is loaded for bear and is the best team in all of baseball.
The Rockies have some great young pitching, a stud at shortstop in Tulowitski, an MVP candidate in Holliday, and an old stud in Helton (did you know he played college football?). I don't think that they are quite as good as Boston, and some of my reading indicates that I'm far from alone in my feelings there. However, they, as you know, come into this World Series on an incredible roll. They say that momentum is all about tomorrow's starting pitcher, but is that absolutely true when you've won 21 of 22, with 20 of those wins coming against teams with winning records?
It's hard to predict who's going to win this series. I suppose you can line up the two teams and do a bunch of analysis, but really, what's the point? I think it's pretty simple. You have the best team in baseball playing the hottest team in baseball. It's the irresistible force against the immovable object. I am hoping like Hell that the Rockies can win this thing, but if you placed a gun to my head, I think I'm going with the better team. Red Sox in six. Then again, I've picked exactly 50% of the series right so far. Furthermore, I've picked the Red Sox and Rockies right once each. Did I tell you I think this post season stuff is a crapshoot? Maybe it's more like a coin flip.
Without a true rooting interest in this series (other than my antipathy for the New Englanders), I saw that the game's the thing. Bring on the 2007 World Series. Pass the peanuts and crackerjack.

Hopefully Schilling doesn't read the line about not liking him. I'd hate for him to have the opportunity to rub it in when he's got Boggs-Baylor-Rice due up and Evans in the hole against Ron Davis in a save situation.
I thought only Darin Erstad played college football??
Did he ever kick a touchdown?
Shame that Bo Jackson never played the game...
you know, I'd give a +10 for that crack, E-6.
but somehow "Bo" and "10" just doesn't seem to go with Jackson.

Yeah, Johnson seems more in order...
irresistible force against the immovable object.
Nice intro. I'm guessing a nomination for th' Hokme is in the works, Stick.
Game getting started anytime soon? Or do I have to buy a Chevy first?
Buy two for when the first one breaks down.
'sides, you can steal parts from the first one later on.
wow. I thought this game started at seven
Um, you have watched a postseason game on FOX before, right?
I just watched Wired Science on PBS for an hour (7-8) and it was very interesting and informative. Then I switch over to FOX and it's still the bottom of the 1st. I, for once, am happy that FOX takes 3-4 years of pregame.
I don't know what to make of the Wakefield injury thing. I understand the guy is hoping to return next year, but it's the World Series. He might not ever make it this far again.
I read that, and all I can think about is Brad Radke last year, throwing with two injuries that could be with him for the rest of his life, and how sad it was that the Twins couldn't make it to the Series for him. Brad would have been there to take the mound twice.
Radke == Animal Farm's Boxer
All animals are equal, but some are more equal than others.
+ 3 extra labrums
of course, Wakefield already has THE ring. The curse-breaking one.
McCarver (as overhead cam and computer trajectory graphic clearly show last strike is actually outside by several inches): "Right on the corner."
15 pitches, 10 strikes. not bad.
Beckett looks pretty on tonight, which will be bad news for the mountain men.
Alright! Yaz doing the Sox lineup tonight. First worthwhile thing they've done tonight.
Yaz doing Bo-Sox lineup == priceless.
I bertin' hate the bertin' Red Sox with a bertin' passion.
Yaz sighting! He's looking pretty good. Wonder if he's got more range than Manny?
My brothers and I were huge Yaz fans when we were kids. The man was a force of nature.
prolly still has as good an arm
I also hate that bertin' little piece of crap Petunia and his bertin' smirky douchebag, Tom Bradyesque smile.
Dustin the Wind
All they are is Dustin the WiiiiiIIIIiiiiiind
Home. Town. Legend.
Chowdah.
This doesn't bode well...
Oh man. I hope this isn't gonna be a game at Coors East.
Why did the Rox start Carmona?
PEDROIAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!
Thanks for saving my fantasy baseball team.
I really do hate these god damn chowda heads.
McCarver: "Here's a guy who disdaaaaaaaaaains the on-base percentage. I mean he hates the on-base percentage."
me: WTF are you TALKING about, moe ron?
is he talking about himself again?
Jeff Francis sitting on an infinite ERA right now. I always love that.
The Nation Has Problems: Denver.
David Ortiz tries to bunt. The earth should just open up and swallow him for that stupidity.
Must have coughed up some residual Ullger.
That's what's on Manny's helmet!
Or the earth could demand that he gets a 5 yr, $75 million contract so that he can be around when the new stadium opens.
You gotta love that attitude, SBG. He disdaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaains the OBP.
I have no idea what that meant. Ortiz has one of the best OBPs in the league. That was just stupidity from Baby Buck.
Or was that the babbling fool McCarver.
it was Toe Buckarver.
Can that be treated?
sure. Rub it with a sharp Stone.
+1 CYA.
*belatedly*
+10 little piggies.
Carmona Carmona Carmona Carmona Carmona Carmona Carmona Carmona Carmona Carmona Carmona Carmona Carmona Carmona Carmona Carmona Carmona Carmona Carmona Carmona Carmona
Game over?
Hats off to an explosive Boston offense. Wow.
I think the winning streak might be in danger.
Oh come on... J.D. Drew? Are you serious?
Nice play by Hawpe to keep that ball out of the corner in right.
Buck: The Rockies have been so much fun to watch.
Me: No thanks to you, FOX.
(Rockies haven't been on FOX or ESPN for 8 years.)
If Lugo gets a hit, I fully expect to see a mushroom cloud on the horizon.
That's a pretty damn good play by Atkins and Helton.
Sweet D, Roxy.
Nice play by Atkins. Nice play by Helton.
Nice pick and throw by Atkins. Game's over, but the Rox could still recover their dignity.
Very sharp glovework on both ends by Atkins and Helton.
There must be an echo in here!
We are all watching the same game, CH.
Yeah, I'm just in the back of the room by the kegs, I guess.
the internet tubes take longer to get to the Madison area, mebbe?
Nah, I guess tonight I'm just the drunk guy repeating what everyone else is saying.
Give me an hour, I'll join ya, pally.
Is Beckett for real?
Tulip is gonna go deep this inning.
The Green Monster=Gay
It's sexually attracted to other male Green Monsters?
Have you not seen the mascot react in public?
It finds the Hulk "dreamy".
Who isn't?!
What, it's wearing some fabulous bunting?
so, line-drives to left are gay-bashing???
Manny is guilty of hate crimes then?
Soooo close
this all could be retribution for the pixie vests, I suppose.
Beckett not joshing.
that's gonna leave a bruise on the Monster.
See what happens when you connect on that 96 MPH fastball?
Yay Rockies.
Well that was pretty deep! I'm 1 for 1 tonight!
A personal best!
Time for a press conference to announce your retirement from the procrastination biz?
Really, upon further thinking, you were right about that as much as Leon The Professional is a French film. I award you 1/2 points.
That was a funky bounce. It looked more like a puck on the boards than a baseball on a wall. Sucker popped straight up.
Beckett not exactly fooling the right-handed bats that inning.
I guess Sam Adams isn't the New England institution it pretends to be.
There's only ONE world series. there's only one late October/early November!!!
Can those commercials go off the air already?
You want FrankTV back?
