Red SoxatRockies

What do the Rockies and Red Sox have in common? Each team has a seven game winning streak and a three game losing streak in this post season. I'm thinking that the Red Sox like the timing of their streaks better.

Mark Grace says pride will be a factor in the Rockies' win - just like the Padres in 1998, the Braves in 1999, the Cardinals in 2004, the Astros in 2005...

The Mets in 2000...

Oops.

CarterHayes
CarterHayes replied on October 28th, 2007 at 7:20 pm

Yeah, I'm cherry-picking, but I think "pride" is pretty silly. Everybody has pride, so is he saying the Rockies' pride is greater than the Sox'? It's just silly.

GreekHouse
GreekHouse replied on October 28th, 2007 at 7:25 pm

Yeah, people are always trying to make up reasons that a team has an advantage. I mean, it seems so unlikely that they could be swept after winning 20/21 right?

SBG replied on October 28th, 2007 at 7:49 pm

Actually, the oops there was because I thought the Mets were swept. Turns out they won game 3.

From what I can tell, the last team to fall down 3-0 in the WS and not get swept was the 1970 Cincinnati Reds and there have been several sweeps since then.

Yeah, I won't be able to watch the game tonight, but Jon Lester wasn't all that good this year. He had a decent K-rate, but too many walks and too many fly balls makes him an awful lot like Glen Perkins has been so far. (And I'm on record as not being a huge Perkins fan.) Both Lester and Perkins would seem to profile better as relief pitchers to me.

Cook would scare the heck out of me as a Rox fan given his low K-rate, but when healthy he's gotten a lot of ground balls. With the layoff, though, he's a huge quesion mark, so who really knows what'll happen?

I think it's reasonable to expect a lot of runs tonight, and Colorado definitely has a shot. Hopefully they can pick up a game here, maybe the next one, and generate a little bit of excitement before the season ends.

Should have drawn it along the Missouri River. There'd be about 300,000 people in West Dakota, but it would be scenic.

CarterHayes
CarterHayes replied on October 28th, 2007 at 7:41 pm

I guess that would make the capitol of West Dakota Rapid City, considering half the people in the state would live there.

Made a batch of beer couple years ago - called it '100 States', and listed them on the label: included several new states (Kuwait, Canadian provinces 'cept Quebec, Mexico, Cuba, etc.). Cali got split into four new states. Dakotas and Carolinas got combined. Don't recall but might have split Idaho into Washtanaho. Was an IPA if I recall.

I'll just hazard a guess and say it's because the mountains are west of the city proper (and cross the entire state). If you come into Denver from the west you realize right away that you're up on the high, high plains and not in the mountains anymore.

New Guy
New Guy replied on October 28th, 2007 at 8:29 pm

We based it on which team each person was rooting for. Each time your team made an out, you have to drink. Each time your team gets a hit or a walk, the other people have to drink. If you give up a home run or a stolen base, you have to do a shot.

We made up a game for the commercial breaks too, where the first person to say what the commercial is for doesn't have to drink.

Man it was a long game.

GH -- The T-Wolves are doing a good job of unloading contracts now. It's going to be a cold winter, but what are your thoughts about the upcoming season in terms of development? The second round pick makes the club for the second consecutive year... is there hope?

GreekHouse
GreekHouse replied on October 28th, 2007 at 9:26 pm

I think the Wolves have a solid nucleus of young talent right now. I didn't get to see very many games last season, so I'm not as up to date as I would like to be. But last year's second round pick turned out to be a pretty solid player and I would expect him to continue to be a solid role-player/spot starter for years to come. Jefferson is a young stud and a franchise caliber player. Foye has All-Star potential and McCants might even pan out to be a decent player. We also have 3 (I think!?) first-round picks next season and will have a lot of money to resign players and possible get a good FA.

There will be some lean years for sure, but as long as McHale doesn't get impatient, I think that we could be pretty good in the near future.
