This 1992 Baseball Issue's cover story is titled "Standing Small" and is found on pages 110-124: Little guys can be giants in the big leagues, and 5'8" slugger Kirby Puckett embodies the notion in a big way. There are some funky action "photos" of various players made to look proportionally small next in their baseball environments (like the cover photo), including of Kirby Puckett, Mark Lemke, Tom Gordon, Chuck Knoblauch, and Bip Roberts. Kirby doesn't make the Alltime Small-Star Team (outfielders are Mell Ott, Wee Willie Keeler, and Paul Waner).
Additional articles of note include:
-
The Final Four: Michigan, Duke (who's this Laettner character?), Indiana, and Cincinnati, to be held at Minneapolis
-
Davis Love III in the TPC
-
Lackluster US figure skating (Yamaguchi excepted)
-
Blueprint for baseball, a nine-point plan: Rev up those interleague rivalries; Keep the games moving; At least 20 home day games, for the kids; Bigger strike zone; A star-studded night for the major awards; Mario Cuomo for commissioner; More clinics and contibutions to service organizations; A lasting peace between owners and players.
-
A Manager's Survival Guide (13 managers got the can in 1991)
-
Bobby Valentine, the great survivor
-
Some beautiful overhead photos from 300' above the SkyDome field
-
Howard Johnson
-
Baseball predictions (AL West: ChiSox, A's, Twins, Rangers, Mariners, Royals, Angels)

Personal notes:
-
Nice to see Kirby (coming off the 1991 WS season) getting a little love from SI, unlike a decade later.
-
For the Record includes a summary of the A's spring training game Bob Costas managed, a 7-5 loss to the Mariners.

Been a couple months since the last Library item, so I thought I'd toss out this one as a Christmas gift posting -- happy holidays!
What do I want for Christmas? Well, there were a lot of good book ideas floated out there; how about sending one in? Either the SBGLibrary address above, or my rhubarb_runner WGOM mail account will work fine...
The ChiSox were predicted to win the West in 1992? Heh.
I know I'm being picky, but I believe that title is "Big Little Man," which makes a lot more sense.
I'm guessing it's a riff on the Thomas Berger novel/Dustin Hoffman film, Little Big Man.
oh. my bad. I see you were referring to an apparent Freudian slip by Rhu_Ru in the text.
Indeed, good catch SoCal. (fixed) Nice to know these are being read. Or at least skimmed.
Saw the Halsey Hall bio at my bro's in-laws in Grinnell, IA, where we slept while visiting that past couple days. I think I'll try track that one down for a future review here, unless someone out there already has it?
