2007-08 Game 31: Portland Trailblazers @ Minnesota Timberwolves

Posted by SBG on Wednesday, January 2nd, 2008 at 6:00 pm

The Timberwolves open the 2008 portion of this season’s schedule tonight by hosting the Portland Trailblazers at Target Center, carrying their fifth losing streak of at least five games already this season into tonight's game. The Blazers lost their last game of the year in Utah, ending their 13 game winning streak. The Blazers are 18-13, good for 8th place in the deep Western Conference. This looks like a tough one for the Wolves to win.

Not so fast.

The Blazers are 15-3 at home, but just 3-10 on the road. The 13 winning streak, then, coincided with a lot of home games in Portland (yep, all three road winners were included in the streak) and a 10 point loss in Utah puts a little damper on the streak. Still, though, this Portland team is a very good young team (the third youngest team in league history) and they’re facing a squad that is just 3-10 at home, so tonight’s as good an opportunity as any to prettify that ugly road record. The Wolves, of course, have that scary 1-16 road mark (just what did happen that night down in New Orleans?), the worst in the league. They also have the worst home record in the league, too. That shouldn’t be a surprise, considering that they are 3 1/2 games clear of the next worst team in the league, record-wise, Miami, (and 22 1/2 games behind the Cs) just 30 games into the season.

Honestly, it’s hard to think of things to write about with this team. I suppose I could spend a bunch of time analyzing this stat and that, but really what’s the point? ESPN.COM takes a stab at writing about a statistic on the Wolves:

After trading Kevin Garnett to Boston in the offseason, Minnesota is off to the worst start in the franchise's 19-year history. The Wolves would have to win 12 of their final 52 games to avoid tying their worst record, which was 15-67 in 1991-92.

Seriously, the story writes that the Wolves need to finish 12-40 as if that's some sort of huge challenge (and it might be). It's already mathematically impossible for the Wolves to surpass the franchise best record of 58-24, which was only four seasons ago. This team is dreadful, the organization is in shambles, and they are just hoping that luck in the form of a fortuitous draft will somehow bail them out like it did when they selected a skinny high schooler in the first round several years ago (and no, I’m not talking about Ndudi Ebi). The cynic says that this front office doesn’t have the ability to take advantage of their position in the draft (unless it’s a freaking no-brainer). Tonight’s opponent, and their young star, Brandon Roy, provides plenty of fuel for the cynics.

Portland is favored by six. There is no O/U line posted, so I’ll take the Blazers and give the six points. January’s a cold month and the Wolves are providing no warmth for their fans.

<GreekHouse>I am now back from the Twin Cities and have had a nice break from watching the Wolves for a while. I hate having to miss games, but perhaps missing this stretch was good for my sanity. This season is starting to remind me of the first year I had my Twolves blog. Both of these teams have failed to live up to my standards. The major difference is that this time I expected the Wolves to be bad and they've still manage to disappoint me. Ugh.

Back in early December, the Wolves lost a game at the buzzer in Atlanta and then came back and beat Phoenix in the next game. Things were looking up. Since then, the Wolves have gone 1-11. Their only win during that stretch was a game where they gave up 118 points (the Wolves are now 1-0 when allowing 117+ points!). They have been beaten by double digits in 6 of those games including two games to a terrible Seattle team.

In fairness to the Wolves, they've been beset by injuries during this time. When a team is having to adjust its rotations pretty much every night, it's tough for them to establish any sort of consistency–not to mention the fact that these injuries are weakening to an already poor basketball team. I can only talk about Randy Foye's return for so long before it starts to sound like lip service, but I really do think he will help this team tremendously. McCants has been a bit of a disappointment this season and Foye is a good 3-point shooter who can also slash to the hoop and create his own shot. I haven't heard anything on his return since I've been back, so I'm still expecting (hoping) he'll be back by mid-January.

ESPN has the total for the game listed at 191 (line listed as Blazers +5). I think the line is pretty good and probably doesn't offer up a whole lot of value, so I guess I'll take the over.</GreekHouse>

Someone broke the floor. I blame Madsen.

What, did one of his shots hit the floor?

GreekHouse
GreekHouse replied on January 2nd, 2008 at 7:35 pm

That would explain why there is a problem with the floor, but no problem with the basket.

Exactly.

The Target Center is repulsed by the organization and is trying to get out of its deal. It hears the St. Thomas gym has enough seats.

Chris Wright is president of the Wolves? Does Kevin McHale report to him?

Anyone else catch the pre-game talk about Foye? I only heard parts of it while not paying attention, but I thought they said he still has pain in the kneecap. That sounds ominous.

GreekHouse replied on January 2nd, 2008 at 7:46 pm

I saw a little bit of it, but wasn't really paying attention. They said he was going to have it examined again on Monday. That should give us a better idea when he's coming back.

SBG replied on January 2nd, 2008 at 8:32 pm

He's obviously faking the injury. Seriously, though, in an absolutely lost season, the worst thing about it is having Foye on the sidelines.

I have never seen a team show so little interest in fighting through screens, rotating, closing out on the shooter, and following the cutter to the basket. Just terrible effort on the defensive end of the court.

Think they should try to take the 3-point shot away from Jones?

The lack of defensive intensity is atrocious/a hallmark of Randy Wittman teams.

I think that's what galls me most about this team. While it's not all his fault, he seems as good a scapegoat as any. Heads must roll. Start with the coach.

Interesting game brewing in Boston. Rockets are tied with C's without TMac and about 5 minutes left.

KG's got three made buckets in the last six minutes.

...and Garnett drains another one to put the C's up by 5 with 1:30 to play. He looks fired up.

The C's prevail. They're now 84 games ahead of the Wolves for the best record in the NBA.

KG moves into 34th place in career scoring, passing Cliff Robinson and into 35th in minutes, passing Jerry West and one minute behind Sam Perkins.

How many packs of wolves are you going to need for the remainder of the season, GH?

How many games are left?

Take that number and subtract 8.

This is probably the most I've watched the Wolves this year, mainly due to interest in watching the Blazers.

Here are some quick impressions:

1. See above for my feelings about the defense. In short, it sucks.

2. Al Jefferson is an offensive monster. Great footwork, incredible quickness, and a very creative overall offensive game.

3. Is there anyone else on the roster that would start for at least 20 other teams in the league? Maybe Foye when/if he gets back, but everyone else seems to be more in the 6th-16th (Madsen) man range.

4. I thought Dick-n-Bert were bad. They have nothing on the Wolves announcers. Maybe it is the extremely rose-colored glasses when they have conversations about how "there will be a payoff with this team."

5. Glen Taylor is going to lose a lot of money this season. I would not want to have anything to do with selling advertising or tickets for this squad.

6. I like watching the Blazers, what a bright future if everyone gets and stays healthy. The Aldridge/Oden interior combo could be incredible, Roy has a great all-around game already, and the owner appears to understand how to use his money wisely (buying first round picks).

GreekHouse replied on January 2nd, 2008 at 11:53 pm

1. Yes. Brewer is probably the only above average defender on the team. Smith is really slow on defense and has trouble switching on anybody.

3. Probably not, but there might be some potential future starters out there. Also, Ratliff would start on most teams if he were healthy as well.

4. The sad thing is, Hanny has improved significantly from when he first took over. I didn't think he'd be more than a 1-year replacement, but for some reason they kept him. Jim Pete is sorta funny sometimes, I'd like to see what he would do with someone who was actually decent.

Hanneman is terrible, just awful. There may not be a payoff. This team could just suck forever like the Clippers.

davidwatts replied on January 3rd, 2008 at 5:32 pm

yeah, Im not a big Hanneman guy. I dont think the TV crew has recovered after losing Kevin Harlan many many years ago. They wont do it, but the Wolves should try to hire Mike Grimm away from the Gopher radio crew. I think he does an outstading job.

I'm still not sure what to think about Brewer; I want to think he's in the potential future starters club. Loved the pick and even if it doesn't work out feel McHale made the right choice, but he's been a disappointment so far. Still a long way to go, obviously.

One guy I do not like is McCants. Never have and probably never will and I don't know why exactly, other than his effort on the defensive end of the court, which has improved. It seems like he could be a good 6th man in the league.

Basically, other than power forward, this team should take the best available player with the #1-4 overall pick they receive.
