Jellyfish - Ghost At Number 1 / The King Is Half Undressed

Posted by E-6 on Thursday, January 3rd, 2008 at 12:01 am

They dropped two records of nifty power-pop on an indifferent public and then disappeared. The vocal harmonies are positively Beach Boy-esque. Jools Holland, 1992. *singing-drummer alert!*

From German television, 1993.

Wow! A Jellyfish sighting. I actually just picked up Bellybutton at a used CD store a few months back.

They had a video from it that got some play on MTV. It might have been the King is Half Undressed but I don't remember.

When these guys came on the scene, grunge was all the rage. Clever lyrics atop hook-filled songs, played with flair by men wearing silly clothes was decidedly against the grain at the time. Too bad. Both Belly Button and Spilt Milk are chock full of wonderful pop-rock music that holds up remarkably well. Like a mash-up of Squeeze, Queen, and Brian Wilson.

One more from JF. From the Warfield Theater, in their hometown of SF, CA. 1993. Dig those 4-part harmonies.
"That is Why"

Algonad, do you have Spilt Milk? Got it used, well worth the 6.99 I paid.

I don't have Spilt Milk but I see it's pretty cheap on CDNOW.

That is Why is the one that got some decent airplay on MTV. Very psychedelic video and outfits on the album cover. I'm not sure their image people did them any favors. Especially in light of the flannel times you mentioned above.

Yeah, their look (and name, for that matter) did them no favors in the "flannel era." Spilt Milk has a harder guitar edge (a good thing) than it's predecessor, while retaining all the songcraft. It'll sound good on the ride down to De-Mo for the Drake gig. :)

I agree. It's been purchased for $6! Now I just have to wait 4-14 days.
