PJ Harvey & Bjork - Satisfaction

R&R queens breathe new life into a dead horse. 1995. This ought to ruffle some feathers.

That were damned good.
Just awesome all the way around. From Polly Jean's two-chord, femme fatale gunslinger to the adorable look on Bjork's face when her voice goes supernova. These two have starpower shooting out of their fingertips. R_R doesn't know what he's missing.
(I was looking for the Cat Power version when I came across this one. I believe it was taken from the MTV Europe Awards show in '95.)
Here's Cat Power doin' it up nice.
This room's too big for us.
Interesting.
Not gonna say anything about female vocalists. Not gonna do it.
Is your daughter OK with her daddy being a troglodyte, Rhu-Ru?
I'm happy to report nine more distaff vocalists in the coming month.
When I saw "troglodyte" in the sidebar, this is the first thing that popped into my head
Trog Dor didn't like girl singers, either?
Hey, no need to be name-calling here!
I just prefer my music more, uh, manly. Actually, I prefer it instrumental, but that's just me.
I just prefer my music more, uh, manly.
Yeah, sure. I still maintain you mighta gotten roughed up at a Go-Go's concert.
I'm just messin', R_R. It's almost Pavlovian how it works. A female vocalist is featured. You pipe up. I call you a name. It's as predictable as Lucy pulling the ball away when Charlie Brown is gonna kick it.
Scotty: "They called the Enterprise a garbage scow!!!"
Nice
at least you'll be able to get caught up on your technical manual reading, Rhu_Ru.
if Linda Ronstadt doesnt get you..then.. I don't know.
Here she is covering 'Tumbling Dice'
of course, you could have gone in this direction....
I think Linda thinks Leo Sayer (right?) is crazy
Oh dear! Say(er) it's not so, bS.
There's no fever in Leo's funkhouse.
LOL. He's like the rock and roll Richard Simmons.
That's just nasty. Me likey.
When I saw the two names, I braced myself for something really weird. I was surprised that they did a fairly straightforward cover, but they did a good job. I still prefer Cat Power's version, but I like her version even more than the original so that's not really saying much.
Her version from The Covers Record ? I like that better than the original, too. Chop off the chorus and play it like a dirge; hell, you hardly recognize it's the same horribly over-played number.
Does your station have Jukebox, yet? (Of course you do, you're college radio.) What's your take on it? I plan on getting it, as I'm a completist when it comes to Miss Marshall.
We probably have it, but the station hasn't started up for the semester yet so I still haven't heard it. I'm also really looking forward to it.
Not that I know much about Cat Power, but I will buy the record on which she puts the cover of Cat Stevens' "How Can I Tell You?" that was used in a diamond commercial.
Apparently she only recorded the little snippet that was used in the commercial and isn't going to release a full version. Which is really a shame, because the part in the commercial is absolutely gorgeous.
I don't think the original can be topped. I like the covers here, but really the original is off the charts. It's an old horse now, but back in 1965, yeah, that's right, 1965, this bad boy was the shit.
No doubt, when it came out "Satisfaction" was a ground-breaking piece of music. I once loved this tune. Unfortunately, it became one of the most over-played songs of all-time. The saturation point (for me) was reached many, many years ago.
(See "Stairway to Heaven", "Won't Get Fooled Again", "Cinnamon Girl" and all the other great songs 'classic-rock' radio has chosen to ram down our throats ad nauseam.)
True enough. I don't listen to Satisfaction anymore and haven't for years. In fact, I very rarely listen to any Stones music anymore. It's still great though, even if it's been shoved down our throat so far that it's coming out the backside.
I do love the Cover Weeks. A fresh look at these tunes is fun and provides not only a new perspective, but an appreciation for the original.
I listen to 4 Stones albums: Between The Buttons, Beggars Banquet, Let It Bleed, Sticky Fingers on a fairly regualr basis
And since I dont have a great classic rock station in my market anymore, Stones tunes sound a bit fresher
Man, you should add Exile. That's one that always gets me going.
The sunshine bores the daylights out of me.
Mr. Immigration Man, Let me in Sweetie to your Fair Land...
Don't move your head, Don't move your hands, Don't move your lips, Just shake your hips. Do the hip shake, babe
One last cycle, thrill freak Uncle Sam. Pause for bus'ness, hope you'll understand. Judge and jury walk out hand in hand.
All you ladies are lown down gamblers cheating like I don't know how
Thank you for your wine California. Thank you for your sweet and bitter fruit.
Joe got a cough, sounds kind of rough, yeah and the Codeine to fix it. Doctor prescribes, drugstore supplies, who's gonna help him to kick it?
and so forth.
Phish. Loving Cup.
This is a brilliant album.
I own it, but I just dont like it very much. I dont know why! I mean should love that album to death! But it bores me, especially towards the end. Happy, Tumbling Dice, Rocks Off and Rip This Joint
Maybe a parred down, single album of rock of all rock songs from the Exile sessions would satisfy me, but I know that wasn't the intent of the album
oops, I didnt finish my thought.
Happy, Tumbling Dice, Rocks Off and Rip This Joint are killer tunes.
It's meant to be listened to in four separate pieces. The last song, Sole Survivor doesn't do much for me, but the first 17 do it.
maybe you're right. Maybe if I get the vinyl double album and listen to it that way, I might appriciate it
Wow. Look at all these vids! (I'll try and watch 'em all this weekend.) Exile is a great record. And you're right on about it being four separate pieces (sides.) I probably played side two the most.
But come on come on down sweet Virginia
Come on honey child I beg of you
Come on come on down you got it in you
Got to scrape that shit right off your shoes
Good LORD!
E-6, what have we done????????
It's a beautiful thing!
(Maybe we should get Stick to program a couple of weeks, eh?)
looks to me as though he just did!
This has been a really fun week. I love the cover week theme.
Cover week is a lot of fun. Who's next? Neil? Dylan? Sayer?
I think you finally found the formula to keep everyone interested - real rock n roll mixed with alternachicks. A little bit for everyone.
Hey, where's the Justine Bateman version of Satisfaction?
Are we not men?
We are Devo(id!)
there's some originality in art for you, E-6 (and 'wig). Devo was fresssssssssssssshhhhhhhhhhh.
I actually like this quite a bit.
It's funny, brian, I hated these guys when they came out. Hated their stupid flower-pot hats, their silly yellow jumpsuits, and their overall quirkiness. Time has been more forgiving to their sound. It's really quite singular.
(I still hate their look.)
I absolutely hated them, too. But, like you said, their sound has aged well.
Now DEVO rocks. They're the US version of Kraftwerk (artistically, if not musically), but Mothersbaugh is the cat's @ss.
Much to Rhu_Ru's chagrin, another chick voice
Merry Clayton -- Gimme Shelter
By the way, Merry sang on the original version and freaking stole the song from Jagger.
That's a righteous version, boss.
Funky, Hell!
