Cat Power - Lived in Bars
February 24th, 2008 by frightwig
From Later with Jools Holland, 2006.
I chose this because it's an excellent live performance, but the video for the single is also really easy on the eyes.

Beautiful. Both the song and Ms. Marshall. Said it before and I'll say it again, I love this woman.
Picked up her latest, Jukebox. It's got a nice southern soul vibe and a couple of tunes achieve a Stonesy swagger. Her voice is swell throughout. All but one are cover songs (Joni Mitchell, Bob Dylan, Hank Williams, among others.) If you're a fanatic, you already have it. If you're a fan, it's worth owning. But, if you looking for a "gateway drug" to her catalog, I'd start with The Greatest, You are Free, or Moon Pix.

Rrrowr!
she needs to find something to do with her hands up there. Disturbingly like Mariah Carey. The hands, I mean.

Notice, at the end of the clip, ol' Jools also can't help but murmur, "I love her," for all the world to hear.
The other song she performed on that show was "The Greatest," during which she often made pugilistic motions with her hands (she did the same on Austin City Limits). Maybe she needs to write more songs about boxers and manual laborers. The Flaming Lips performed three songs on that program. During "The W.A.N.D." Wayne Coyne wore giant prop hands, and at one point crossed the stage to place his giant hands over Chan like a faith healer. I think he may have a crush on her, too.
I haven't heard the new album, but in the past year I've listened to The Greatest quite a bit, and this week I've been playing Moon Pix in the car. One of the tracks off Moon Pix is also dedicated to Dylan. Joan Baez had a sweet, pretty voice (maybe still does?), but I'd rather listen to a voice like Chan's, too.

I love Baez's voice, but (below) I was just talking about her Zimmy impression. It's devastating.

Here's that lone original from Jukebox: "Song for Bobby", a mash-note to Dylan. Live in Paris, 2008. Ol' Bob should be flattered.

hmm. Kind of interesting. a decent Zimmy homage, although not up to Joan Baez standards.

You can have Joan, bS. I'll take Cat Power.
It's interesting that you comment about her hands. She used to play guitar and piano in her live shows, as she often played solo. For the last two records she's toured with full bands and has been been placed front and center without an instrument. It's probably kinda strange for her. Still, I think she's doin' fine.
