Twins leaders in strikeouts, spring 2008:
8 - Kevin "No Out Pitch" Slowey
6 - Brian Bass
5 - Philip Humber
4 - Baker, Neshek, Reyes, Perkins
Note: Statisics current as of the 6th inning of today's game. In the tradition of spring training statistics, I have hand-picked this statistic to support my point regardless of the biases that may exist.

It will be interesting to see what the company line on Slowey will be now. Boy, Top Jimmy was all over him a week ago Sunday. Now, he goes three scoreless (but six hits), 3Ks, no BB. The tune will probably change quite a bit. This has been another episode of Small Sample Size Theater.
Of those six hits, two were bunt hits, one of which Randy Ruiz forgot to cover first base on. It didn't sound anything was that well hit and he was consistently ahead of the hitters. Slowey would seem to be the quintessential Twins pitcher: Great control, works quickly and is smart. He seems to field his position pretty well as well.
I'm already prepared to have Slowey get the Light Rail treatment from the company to the media which is then spoonfed to the fans. One of my high school classmates started shouting maniacally at me last year on the 4th of July when I dared to stick up for Baker. When I saw him again in September, he was very sheepish about the whole thing. That's going to happen again since Sloweys a control pitcher who needs repetition and is still young.
When Baker came back for good last season, I felt completely browbeaten for thinking he was a good pitcher. I've heard Rick Anderson say a couple of times this spring that Baker might surprise people this year. And of course he's going to surprise people--the Twins have been feeding the media nothing but negative thoughts about Baker from the moment he stepped on a major league mound.

Hey, it wasn't as biased as I thought it was!
Speaking of horrible training camps.
His curveball belongs on the side of a milk carton.
And he's benefiting from 3 Unearned Runs - including those his ERA jumps to 20.86.
