At the 1958 Newport Jazz Festival, from the film Jazz on a Summer's Day. Eric Dolphy plays flute.
[Edit - Vid no longer available 10:15 AM CST. I think I found the same clip, no? E-6]

Man, dude is a dynamic percussionist. I'd like to see him cut loose with sticks instead of mallets sometime.
And once again, the crowd shots from this film are rich. Great pick, 'wig.
That's the clip. Thanks, E-6.
Chico Hamilton gave Dolphy his first big break. They recorded a few albums together in the late '50s, until the record company essentially fired him in '59 when Chico turned in an album of Ellington tunes and the boss decided that Dolphy's playing was too weird. So Hamilton recut the album with Buddy Collette and Paul Horn playing horns, while Dolphy moved on to join Charles Mingus the next year.
The Ellington sessions with Dolphy were presumed lost, until 40 years later a record collector found a test pressing, in mint condition, while digging through a used record bin in Brighton, England, believe it or not. Blue Note put out the album under the title The Original Ellington Suite, so now you can hear for yourself what Chico's label was missing. Of course time has been on Dolphy's side.
Have you heard it?
Of course. I own the CD!
Like I said before, I love Dolphy's flute playing.
This is a powerful piece.
Ditto e-6 on the crowd shots.
