Sorry, The WGOM is no longer accepting Letters to the Editor on this article.

Hey, the 21st century exists!
I saw these guys live at a weird church-ish venue a year or so ago. I hadn't heard of them and was only going because one of the band's members is a friend of a friend. Seeing them live, I was not impressed at all. I think they sound better recorded, but even then I'm rather underwhelmed, at least compared to the buzz they get from some critics.
Pitchfork doesn't give out too many 8.5's. Then again, Pitchfork hasn't been relevant to me in years. (Scroll down to the end of the review ubelmann linked to and get the mp3 of this song. It's 21st Century music, so use extreme caution.)
Ubes, good to see you in the music room. Now get out. Mom said to clean the basement.
Pitchfork is relevant to me only in that three or four times a year I'll stop by to get an idea about what's been recently released. I don't really agree with all that many of their reviews, but sometimes it leads me to good new music.
Pitchfork's "the month in:" columns, "Techno" and "Grime / Dubstep" and "Reggae / Dancehall" are rather essential to my life. I'm not a scenester, though I like the musics, these columns give an outsider a good feel for what's going on, and which artists/cingles to check. These columns lead me to find Burial, Kode9, Dave Aju, Mr. Perfect, and others that I listen to quite a bit.
Also, I check the news and "forkcast" daily, for listening to what's new. I'll read reviews only on bands I already like, or if the nugget sounds pretty interesting. Their review of the Knife's "Silent Shout" helped me pick that up.
This was surprising to see. These guys get played all the time on my radio station, especially by the girl whose show comes right after mine. But I didn't know they were known at all outside of the NW. This was a hilarious video though.
You realize, of course, that frightwig lives in Oregon, so he's exporting material back to those of us living in Flyover Country.
So I see! I'm sorry, frightwig, I missed your edition of Better Know A Citizen. But good looking out to choose music from around here. Now all we need is some Kusikia and some Velella Velella and the WGOM can become an official branch of KUPS.
I played a Binary Dolls video last year, too. We had some discussion about whether I could legitimately call them "Portland's finest," or something.
Credit to my friend twink, a Twins fan and Minnesota expatriate in PDX, for bringing Menomena and a lot of other indie Portland bands to my attention in the first place. She's working with the PDX Pop Now! people on the new compilation right now, so maybe that will give me some ideas for a few WGOM videos when that comes out.
When & where can I hear your show, New Guy?
We had some discussion about whether I could legitimately call them "Portland's finest," or something.
You can legitimately call them anything you want, 'wig. We can just question your legitimacy.
Is that a fancy way of calling me a bastard?
I didn't think it was fancy at all.
Yo mama is on Elliot Spitzer's speed dial.
"When you call us we'll treat you like a person, not a client. Whether you're #9 or #900, you'll get hooked up with somebody who'll finally treat you just how you want to be treated."
Hey I love PDX Pop! We had the last one in our station last semester, but I think someone stole it. I played the Exploding Hearts song off of it all the time.
I don't think I've heard of Binary Dolls, but I will check them out. Kusikia and Velella Velella aren't from Portland though, I think they're both from Seattle. I don't actually play too much music from the northwest on my show, but am required to play one local song per hour. Local for us means basically anything from Oregon or Washington.
If you want to listen, my show is Mondays and Wednesdays from 4-5pm. You can go to http://www.kups.net to find the stream.
I haven't watched the video yet, but I'm assuming that the name of the band comes from that little skiff from Sesame Street?
Yes, that is correct.
I need to get me one of those rolling trampolines. Sweet.
The rolling trampoline bit was pretty awesome.
Quirky good. Nice pick, FW.
