I can do without the blather in that article, no doubt. Cuddyer does come off well on TV, to be sure. But, the role of "leader" is about handling media requests, not about actually, you know, leading the club. Just so we're all clear on that.
I suppose one who is "articulate" enough top be savvy with the media might also posses superior communication skills which might translate to quote, unquote leadership by effectively allowing them to communicate with teammates or to negotiate or convince management of a certain POV. Cuddyer's also got something the young punks don't have yet, which is a pretty sizable contract which might enhance his position as a "mentor." The two aspects might be mutually exclusive of each other - but if all it was about was media, one might look like a horse's ass if they did not command the respect of their teammates, in a sort of leadership role.
Cuddy will be the top interview because so many on the team...
Lack charisma when speaking:
Mauer, Kubel, Morneau, Young
Or don't speak English all that well:
CarGo, Livan
Or are new:
Lamb, Everett, Tolbert, Blackburn
Or are backups:
Punto, Monroe, Redmond
Or are in the bullpen, and no one cares about relievers unless they are closers:
Neshek, Crain, Guerrier, Bass, Rincon, Reyes
That leaves the American starters and Nathan as the #2 choice for interviews.
I'm not sure that GoGomez's problems speaking English are a bug and not a feature.
Pshaw -- it's an April Fool's column. LNP is the defacto leadership on this team.
Let me know when he starts throwing his teammates under the bus and accusing Twins fans of not being as good as Yankees fans. Then we can talk about him getting under my skin.
All I know is that Michael Cuddyer is one incredibly nice guy - and this is from someone with ZERO access. He let me interview him for 45 minutes! during after a Spring Training practice one day in 2005 when the rest of the players had showered and left.
