2008 Game 8: Minnesota Twins at Chicago White Sox

Nick Blackburn vs. Javier Vazquez

I was watching the White Sox beat down the Tigers last night, and a couple of things stuck out at me:

1) The White Sox should have a pretty good offense this year. Swisher and Quentin could be pretty big sticks and Orlando Cabrera is a lot better than whatever they were throwing out at second base last year. Jermaine Dye is aging, but PECOTA still has him projected to be about as good as Kubel/Cuddyer/Young this year--and Mauer/Morneau are the only hitters obviously better than Kubel/Cuddyer/Young for the Twins.

2) The White Sox could have a pretty decent defensive infield. I'm not the world's biggest Orlando Cabrera fan, but Crede-Cabrera-Uribe can cover a lot of ground, Uribe's got a great arm for turning DPs and whatnot, and they can probably collectively overcome Konerko's general badness.

3) With Curtis Granderson out, the Tigers' defense looks bad. Really, really bad. One of the things that got them to the WS in '06 was a well above average defense, but they seem far removed from that these days.

Anyway, Blackburn takes on the Sox this afternoon. His first start was a success from just about any angle you look at it, but it's just one start. It would be a huge blessing if he could continue to pitch like that. U.S. Cellular is a great place to hit home runs, so it will be especially important for Blackburn to continue inducing groundballs.

Vazquez is the Sox' best starter, with 9.3 K/G against just 2.2 BB/G last season, with an xFIP of 3.83. He's right-handed, so there's some chance the Twins can muster some run support for Blackburn, but I'm not holding my breath.
