  • R.I.P. Geremi (formerly Jeremi) Gonzalez, former pitcher for the Cubs, among others, who died Sunday at the age of 33 after being struck by lightning.

  • just returned last night from my little mini-vacation. We finished off the weekend with a 3 1/2 hour, 2 family (4 kids), golf marathon. It was only 9 holes and I watched probably 25 shots between each shot of my own. First round for my kids. Amazingly, we played on Memorial Day morning and not a single group caught up to us despite our slooooow pace of play. We were on one hacktastic course.

  • I haven't seen anyone link this yet-

  • Henry Blanco may not even be the best active big-leaguer named "Blanco" any more. Gregor Blanco of the Braves is hitting .299/.417/.361 in 97 big-league at bats.

  • As a warning to any WGOM parents with young kids; if you run across any ads or trailers for the movie Beverly Hills Chihuahua, cover your toddlers eyes and ears, and RUN for the nearest exit/change the channel/whatever it takes! The poor folks at Wehrenberg St. Charles 18 Cine have some vomit to clean up yesterday. If I were an animator in that much need of work, I would go into real estate instead.

  • The Twins kick off a three game series in Kansas City tonight. KC is currently on an 8-game losing streak, and Joe Posnanski is not happy about it.

*Yeah, I’m a little grumpy because the Royals losing streak will mean I have to come off my book sabbatical yet again and write about the Royals tonight and probably keep writing about them until they win a game which, as any and every Royals fan can tell you, is a very dangerous game.

The rest of his post explores losing streaks and proposes an interesting theory about why some teams have them and some don't. Minnesota, for example, has had only one 8+ game losing streak since 2002, and none since 2004. He has an interesting explanation for that anomoly in his theory, but I won't spoil it for you. I'll just say it probably had more to do with Johan Santana than the reason Joe came up with.

  • Speaking of covering your eyes, Alex Romero is hitting 331/374/438 for AAA Tucson through 31 games and 130 ABs.

Eight doubles and 2 HRs. Hey, just as many XBH as RonDelmon has in the Majors this year through 50 games and 189 ABs!!

    • Park adjustments, league adjustments, park adjustments, league adjustments, park adjustments, league adjustments. Delmon could probably hit .400/.500/.800 at Tucson in the PCL.

PECOTA projects Romero to hit .268/.321/.386 in the majors this year, were he to hit in a neutral park. For comparison, Denard Span was projected to hit .266/.319/.358 and almost certainly has more defensive value. And Delmon was projected to hit .290/.328/.469. Obviously he's been quite a bit below that in the power department, but how much do 8% of his career PA count for, anyway?

  • BTW, welcome back, ubelmann. Hope your vacation was enjoyable. So, what is the final value of pi?

  • This is ridiculous. The local bank thermometer shows me that it is currently 42 degrees. In the last week of May. In the afternoon. Well, I don't know about anyone else, but I've had enough. Next month, I'm going to pack my bags and move south.

    • Speaking of ridiculous, it's raining here. And after the 3-1/4" in the last day and a half, we're up +12" over the average rainfall in StL for this time of year. I spent all Sunday night dreaming about thunder and lightning for some strange reason.

      • talking to my parents this weekend, they said they had a frost warning (this is north of Grand Rapids). My dad said he still hasn't planted his tomatoes and peppers in his garden.

      • It rained really bad here Sunday night.

      • Also speaking of ridiculous, it's ridiculously hot here in Austin. Not Austin, MN, the non-Spam and far more southerly Austin, TX. It's been 93+ degrees for the last 10 days and the 5 day forecast calls for at least 5 more. We've had less than an inch of rain all month. Somehow we managed to get bigger-than-a-golfball sized hail on the only day it really rained.

It's gonna be a long, hot and dry summer here. I'm not sure I'd trade 93 for 42. Come to think of it, I definitely wouldn't trade 93 for 42. But I'm not looking forward to 4 more months of this.

        • Moss

Mrs. Moss and all the Moss children are headed to Ft. W for a week. She just checked the forecast...98 every day.

She's not too excited about dealing with that heat, even though it's been unusually cool here.

  • Danny Barreiro's up to his old tricks. I know most of you have him on "ignore" but its just comical to me how he continues to REEEEEAAAACH whenever possible to bash Mauer. Today he questions why Mauer gets a free pass in the STRIB article about lack of power wheraas Lamb and Cuddyer don't. Not even looking at positions, do you think Joe's OPS of 829 compared to the Michaels' 606 and 613 has anything to do with it Danny boy? Its not like Joe is hitting 30% better than average while the other 2 are hitting 30% below average. Oh wait, that's exactly the way it is.

    • Honest-to-God, the local media's treatment of Mauer sometimes makes me want to quit following baseball altogether. If he did everything they expected of him, he really would be the Baseball Jesus, not to mention the greatest catcher to ever roam the planet. If we can't be happy with Joe Mauer, what exactly can we be happy with? And isn't it good to be happy sometimes?

    • Joe C has the appropriate response in print today: "Quibbling about Mauer’s home run total is like quibbling about a top point guard’s lack of dunking skills. "

    • This article here sums up my feelings on Barreiro and his man hate for Mauer.

    • I only listen to KFAN when I feel the Vikings don't get enough ass-kissing media attention.

    • SBG

Barreiro's ranting on Mauer is almost enough to make me buy a number 7 jersey.

  • another quote on the Carlos Gomez Quote Board

"[I started] this when I was 10 years old," Gomez said. "Every time you see me at the plate, I smell it, I kiss it, I talk to my bat. I do it depending on the situation. Sometimes I tell it, 'Come on, get a base hit now, or I won't use you no more, you have to get a base hit.' When the bat does his thing -- base hit -- after that, I kiss it. I love my bat. I say sometimes, 'I love you, keep going.'"

    LOL I love this guy

    • LOL. Oh, he's a keeper, alright. I liked his quote about Verlander over the weekend, too.

"This guy is a great pitcher," Gomez said. "But his mind is not good."
