Is this the end of the Flip Saunders era in Detroit?

SBG
SBG replied on May 31st, 2008 at 9:13 am

I think it's probably the end of Rasheed Wallace in Detroit. And maybe Flip, too.

I am continually amazed by the negative press that KG gets in this town. When analyzing this series, Steve Aschburner wrote this:

Some NBA insiders feel that, if there is a hair's difference between them in the here and now, on the court Thursday and for the rest of this best-of-seven series, the advantage belongs ever so slightly to Wallace.

The dreaded unnamed sources. Since when is Rasheed Wallace even close to the same player as KG? Preposterous. And KG showed that in this series.

So, SBG, who will you be rooting for in the Finals?

somebody please explain to me what Flip's deficiencies are as an NBA coach, too. I've never quite gotten it, although I admit that I haven't watched the NBA closely in a number of years.

Man, Detroit just fell apart in the 4th yesterday. The ballhandling in the backcourt, in particular, suddenly got inexcusably lax--at home, with the lead. The Pistons have developed a rep for letting down too much when they feel comfortable or content with themselves, and maybe the coach deserves some blame for that, especially when you see it happen at the end of such an important game.

Any Finals predictions?

I think the Lakers will take it this year.

I can't wait for the "Pau Gasol is better than KG" stories to start.

Gasol has more tools -- he speaks what, 4-5 languages?

Hey, the Twins' game last night made the video highlights section at ESPN's MLB homepage! Wait, you don't suppose it was because of the Yanks, do you??

Interesting. It looks like our man Aschy was searching for a different angle - some fresh ground to cover. If you take it as Wallace has the same "physical ability" as Garnett but fails to adequately harness those skills because mentally he is not as gifted as Garnett, I don't see it as that negative. On the flip side - it's the same old story about Garnett's well-documented weaknesses (at least as defined by the media and "unnamed sources."

I'm just thrilled Garnett will get to play in the NBA finals.

SBG replied on May 31st, 2008 at 10:52 am

A different angle is fine, but why is every angle around here obtuse?

KG >>> Wallace. To suggest otherwise is just plain ridiculous.

I dunno, I think it's kind of acute take on the situation.

But, we're in agreement that it's not right.

I've begun the process of sorting through almost seventeen years' worth of stuff in preparation for moving at the end of June. My reactions usually fall into one of three categories: "Gee, I thought I'd lost that," "Why in the world did I ever keep that?", and "I wish I'd remembered a couple of years ago that I had that. It would've come in handy."

brianS replied on May 31st, 2008 at 10:48 am

I don't envy you the process. Here's my recommendation: rate everything on a 1-5 scale, with 5 being "I'm going to the grave with this".

Then throw away or sell everything that's not a 5.

Jeff A replied on May 31st, 2008 at 11:14 am

We are throwing out or giving away a lot of stuff. We still will probably keep too much, but the number of garbage bags sold in this town is going up substantially.

United Methodist pastors tend to move around a lot, so I will probably never live in one place this long again. There is both good and bad to that, but the good part is that the next time we pack, we shouldn't have quite as much stuff to go through. I'm sure there will still be a lot, though.

Serving at the pleasure of the bishop - the life of the itinerant Methodist minister. Not quite the circuit rider days, but still, I don't envy you. Best of luck with the move.

Jeff A replied on May 31st, 2008 at 3:33 pm

As I said, there's good and bad to it. It's what I signed up for, so there's no use griping about it. What makes this move worse, though, is that I have to go to a licensing school in Salina, Kansas from June 8-20, so I basically have next week and the last week of June to get everything packed. My LSW (long-suffering wife) will have to take care of the rest.

I rented Lars and the Real Girl last night. Interesting movie. It was marketed more as a quirky comedy but I thought it was a lot more serious than the marketing made it out to be. Seems like a movie that would fit with what SBG says he looks for in a film.

One note - it seems that Paul Schneider is the go-to supporting actor for "Real Girl" movies.

USAToday tosses out 5 Hall-potential latter day catchers; interesting how Varitek and Posada paragraphs are intangible-full, but barely a stat of worth mentioned. Oh, and I wonder if Barreiro will read it all the way to the bottom?

ubelmann
ubelmann replied on May 31st, 2008 at 3:02 pm

I would rank them in terms of Hall-potential:

1. Rodriguez (Already qualified for Hall)
2. Piazza (Already qualified for Hall)
3. Posada (At 80 WARP3 so far, he wouldn't be quite deserving if his career ended today, but with two or three more strong seasons could be good enough)
4. Mauer (34 WARP3 so far is a good start, but he has a long, long way to go)
5. Varitek (Is this a joke? Varitek has a career 55 WARP3 to Mauer's 34 and Mauer is 11 years younger. Varitek has absolutely no chance at this point in his career to be Hall-worthy.)

In the it's early but he's got a good start category, Brian McCann deserves some mention, though his CS% is not very good.

but Veritek is the CAPTAIN! for shame you say he is not the best! :p

Jeff A
Jeff A replied on May 31st, 2008 at 4:14 pm

It shows why the five-year waiting period is a good idea. I fully agree that Jason Varitek does not belong in the Hall of Fame, but if they could vote on him right after he retired, he might have a chance. The five-year wait helps people look at things a little more objectively.

I just stumbled across some stuff from when I was a regional commissioner for the South Dakota Teener Baseball program (ages 13-16). I pulled out the 1998 roster for Mt. Vernon, and one of the players was Chad Greenway, the same one who is now a linebacker for the Vikings.

Kenji Johjima stole home for the Mariners today against the Tigers on a busted suicide squeeze. It looked like Miguel Cairo pulled back his bunt attempt with Johjima halfway down the line.

I wonder, who was the last catcher to steal home?

CBS is airing a new version of that classic game show Password. Regis Philbin is hosting it. I thought it was pretty good. Finally, a fast paced game show!
