Cup of Coffee: June 17, 2008

Posted by SBG on Tuesday, June 17th, 2008 at 5:47 am

Could tonight be the night that KG gets his ring? Well, probably not. They're going to have to size it and all that. But, I think this series ends tonight.

I'm as big a KG fan as anybody, but man did he look atrocious in game5. he got in foul trouble early, than late in the 4th, he missed 2 huge freethrows, missed a couple tip-ins that you'd expect him to finish on and just could not secure a defensive rebound. Hopefully he can rebound tonight to erase the demons and get the SG's of the world to stop calling him a "2nd bannana"

I'll admit to cursing at a few of those moments in my kitchen on Sunday night. A few made free throws and a couple of makable tip ins converted and they're drinking champagne.

I wonder how Johan Santana is enjoying his first season in the Big Apple.

Put it this way - I bet his chances of winning a WS would have been better in Minnesota (or Boston) than for either NY team. I dunno, you can say that money will make you happy and that it wouldn't matter where you work, but I have not fouond that to be the case.

Beau replied on June 17th, 2008 at 10:56 am

I didn't get the feeling, though, that Santana had that many ties to Minnesota other than the team. He may have wanted a change even if the Twins had equalled the Mets offer.

SBG replied on June 17th, 2008 at 12:37 pm

Maybe so. But, the Mets are absolutely melting down right now.

Moss' neighbor has a full-size van just to haul around his windsurfing board. Not to mention a wetsuit, etc.

He's got no family and no other perceptible hobbies, so whatever...

Anyone here have a job where they have to deliver bad news way too often? The last few weeks at work it's been a never-ending string of uncomfortable, difficult discussions with clients. Worse yet, many are about things that I either don't have a solution for or disagree with the bad news being delivered (but can't change). It's amazing how often I have to lie as a social worker. Even though it's generally the right thing to do at the time, it doesn't make it any easier. It would be easier to tell people that they're dying; at least that is an inevitable finality that most people eventually accept. My three day Chicago vacation is coming at the right time.

One of the guys on my rugby team brought me back a sixer of Moose Drool from Montana. Is there any kind of local TC brew that I can bring back from the Convention to return the favor? Suggestions?

Banjo
Banjo replied on June 17th, 2008 at 10:39 am

Anything by Surly Brewing. Do not be alarmed though, it is only sold in cans.

I like Schell's Firebrick and Zommerfest, as I'm from New Ulm.
I also really like Summit's take on Hefeweizen.

I'd prolly go with the Summit oatmeal stout and porter. The winter ale is excellent, but it isn't exactly the season....

boy, I'd never heard of Surly, but they seem to be pretty popular with the kids at Beer Advocate

Surly is dee-lish, especially on tap--love that Cynic (Hello, Grumpy's NE!) I wish they would come up with a new design for their cans, however. It looks like an energy drink or summat.

Surly is a good choice. I love the Bender.

I also love Flat Earth's Cygnus X-1. Somehow they brewed a beverage inspired by Rush that doesn't suck.

My favorite Summit is the Scandia, but I don't think they're making that right now either.

Funny you should say that; Cygnus X-1 is a black hole in the constellation Cygnus, so it sucks big time.

Both Surly and Flat Earth are excellent choices. I would say skip Surly's Bitter Brewer, it's not quite up to the standard of their other beers. Scandia is still available in some places, I know we have a handful of twelve packs lying around at my shop.

I'm a big fan of Rush River, although that's a tick over the border in River Falls.

I don't care how objectively bad Premium is, I will always love it.

As for my suggestion, I'm a fan of the Flat Earth brewery. I don't know much about it other than that I've had their beer and loved it. Or you could get some Gluek's Amber Bock or whatever it is that Dazzle constantly shills on the radio. You could get it in their weird/disgusting aluminum bottles!

Chad Ford has his mock draft up on ESPN. Guess who he has the Wolves taking with pick #3?

brianS replied on June 17th, 2008 at 12:06 pm

Why is Ford still listing Beasley at 6-10? I thought he measured 6-9 in his shoes, which would make him 6-8 at best.

If Beasley is available at 3, they'd better take him. Else, I hope they trade down. Charlie Villanueva plus the 8th pick sounds much better than JR Mayo.

SBG
SBG replied on June 17th, 2008 at 12:36 pm

I've read that Beasley is 6'9 in shoes, under 6'8 w/o. God, wouldn't this be the Wolves luck. They get Beasley to play the one position where they are set. They have to take the best player available, though.

I agree with this sentiment. Beasley seems to be a head above everyone else in this draft, but there is quite a bit of lesser talent available. I don't think the Wolves would do that much worse drafting 8th than they would drafting 3rd. Then again, it's McHale, so it doesn't really matter where he drafts.

Especially when you consider there was talk of them taking Brook Lopez at #3 and now ESPN is projecting him at #9.

Just call Chad Ford The Weather. Wait a few minutes, and he'll change.

Algonad
Algonad replied on June 17th, 2008 at 3:11 pm

In his defense, he is trying to predict what the teams will do and not rank players, right? I'd think that would be difficult to do and subject to pretty constant change.

I haven't noticed quite how badly Jason Kubel is batting against lefties this year. No wonder he's not in the lineup tonight. 48 PA - is that some small sample size located mostly in his slump, or enough to platoon him with Monroe for the rest of the season? He has been hitting well lately.

I see that the Yankees drafted the ambidextrous pitcher out of Creighton. Anyone know what MLB rules are regarding such a freak? Could he have a 220 pitch-count limit (110 pitches per arm)? Could he pitch 2 out of 5 spots in the rotation? Start as a righty one game out of five and relieve as a LOOGY the remaining 4 games?

Dread Pirate Will Young
Dread Pirate Will Young replied on June 17th, 2008 at 4:34 pm

AMR, I think the only relevant rule is that he must declare which arm he will use before a plate appearance and then only use that arm throughout the duration of the PA. He can change from batter to batter, but not within the PA.
