Convention Round Up

Posted by SBG on Sunday, June 22nd, 2008 at 7:21 am

Well, the Second Annual SBG Convention is now history. I'm pretty happy with how it turned out. We had a beautiful day in the park, a pretty good turnout and a nice Twins win.

I got to Minnehaha Falls Park early in the morning so that I could claim a spot. There were a couple of choice spots that were already taken, but I was able to snag a decent spot, albeit one that was a ways away from the parking lot. All that meant really, was that trips to the car to get stuff took a little longer.

Andrew and his friend Q were the first to arrive. Our guy Andrew ran a 5K Saturday morning, and they came over to the Park from there. Then, my right hand man on the Convention, Banjo showed up and we started cooking. Pretty soon, the other people showed up and we had a nice picnic. Folks were talking baseball, visiting in general and having a good time. BabySBG was there, and most folks got to "hear" what a fish said. Folks got a chance to meet the inimitable ubelmann. I didn't get a chance to talk to him as much as I would have liked, but that's okay. It was fun to actually met him and put a face to all the writings.

Will Young brought a delicious birthday cake in honor of Sheenie, his wife and SBG Nation citizen and Andrew, both of whom were celebrating birthdays that day. I was not celebrating my birthday, but I enjoyed the cake nonetheless.

It seemed like the day just flew by. I think we could have started the thing at 12 Noon and people would still have been reluctant to head out at 5 PM. But, we had to get to the game. So, off we went. The game itself was fast moving, with very little offense until the Twins exploded for six runs in the seventh inning. New Guy made a number of predictions, and I'm pretty sure all of them came true. Ha!

John Bonnes, AKA, "The Twins Geek" stopped by at the game and gave us all free copies of his wonderful "Game Day" program. Thanks, John.

All in all, it was a fun day. I got to spend some time talking with pretty much everyone, which was cool. Anytime you get to talk Twins with the likes of Aaron, Seth, Nick and all the rest of the guys is a good time. Thanks to everyone who came to the Convention and thanks to Banjo for all your help. It was a fun time. Hopefully, next year's convention will be even better.

Sounds like a good time. Did you have a chance to read Souhan's trash of an article in this morning's TRIB? Did Reusse, Barreiro, Souhan really just hate KG so much because he took so long after games to give interviews?

Yeah, I read that. It's nothing compared to the rip job that Reusse and Souhan put on him on their radio show this morning.

I have yet to digest all of what I heard from those guys -- but if even some of what they alleged is true, it certainly puts Garnett's tenure in Minnesota in a different light. I almost could not believe how frontal Ruesse was --in fact I think he did cross the line and quickly backed off a bit. In the end, I would equate some of the rip to how folks around here roll their eyes when they hear someone in the national media talk about the Twins doing the little things right. When you know the mythology is not true, it does grate on you.

I'm curious, what did they say?

Reusse called him an idiot. He went on a jag about how he was too stupid to get into college and that's why he went pro in the first place. I don't think that's true, although KG might have been a prop 48 candidate. He then said that he probably never touched a book in his life. He also said that he didn't like Caucasian teammates -- and Top Jimmy chimed in, without a hint of irony -- yeah, he punched one of them (know any other black athletes in MPLS that punched a white teammate?). Basically, he called KG dumb, lazy and racist.

Top Jimmy said that KG was the stereotype of an overpaid athlete. WTF? I seem to remember KG busting his butt every game.

Then, Reusse went on and on about how KG can't score in the fourth quarter and he said that it was KG's fault that the Wolves didn't win a title in 2004. He said, oh yeah, Cassell got hurt. What he didn't say was that the team that beat them had Shaq, Kobe, Karl Malone and Gary Payton.

Top Jimmy said that the reason the Celtics won the title was that Pierce was better than Kobe. He said KG shot poorly in the series... (didn't mention that Kobe shot pretty badly, too).

They also said that KG loved to play the martyr at NBA All-Star games. I'm thinking he loves his current position a whole hell of a lot better. They complained that the national media sucks up to KG. That's ridiculous. I can point to 50 stories in the national media that are critical about KG.

Their big thing was that KG was pissed off that the team was losing. Basically, it was character assassination. Reusse also complained that people were sending him a bunch of emails because he said that he was rooting for the other team. It was pathetic and Mr. Reusse's lazy and stupid thing smacked of racism.

Speaking of Gameday, When I went to a Cubs game last fall, I figured most teams must have a high-quality unofficial program, so I bought what ever was sold across the street. It completely sucked.

It was the August-September issue, and didn't have an updated stats insert. Instead it, had stats for like three players from each team that the Cubs would play in the 2 months of the season (as of July 31). No splits, and the stats were like, Avg, HR, and RBI. No Rosters (who is #32 on the Dodgers? I only bought a program, so I have no way of knowing).

And I don't believe it came with a pencil.

That is why I was happy to pay $2 for a Gameday last night even though I had bought one two games prior... There is more useful info and better writing in that four page insert than there was in the whole $3 P.O.S. that I bought outside Wrigley.

It certainly was a good time. It was cool to see meet everybody and judge them based on appearance put faces to the names. Kudos to Stick for putting it together, and kudos to Banjo for the vittles! Kudos to Rhubarb for carrying on the game log! Kudos to Delmon for hitting a homerun! Kudos all around.

pffft, the gamelog would carry on fine without me. Kudos to you guys for picking a good game to attend. Hopefully the rest of us can make it for the next convention

Did Delmon hit a HR in batting practice? Is Moss missing something here??

New Guy
New Guy replied on June 22nd, 2008 at 9:00 pm

Nothing like that, I have just sufficiently altered my memory of the game to the point where Delmon actually did hit a homerun in his first AB. It just looked so good off the bat... it must have been a homerun.

I'm still convince that ubelmann doesn't exist.

Moss too. He's a conspiracy.
